Dr. Seigel and Dr. Savoy of Savoy & Seigel are both great--best eye doctors I've been too. They are on Newark just off Grove. And Ira, the guy who fits your glasses is a hoot too. One note: avoid Saturday mornings as they are very busy.

I need a new Optometrist. I loved Dr. Moore at the Cohen's Fashion Optical in the Newport Mall. He was really nice and very professional. I've been wearing glasses for most of my life and have astigmatism. Other doctors have given me the wrong prescription on several occasions, but I've never had an issue with Dr. Moore.
I just found out that Dr. Moore left Cohen's last year. :( Anybody know if he's still in the area?

Can anyone recommend and eye doctor for my daughter, 9 years old? She's a bit (okay, a lot) sensitive about anything involving the eye.
Also our Orthodontist passed a couple of years ago and also looking for a recommendation. Thanks!

Get yourself NOW to a major hospital - preferably NYU or Columbia Presbyterian where they have eye specialists. If you cannot make it to NY, get to Hackensack University Medical Center. Waiting days to take care of this can cost you your vision.
DON'T WAIT...and I hope you are okay.

This must be a joke. Get your ass to the ER at JCMC. They have specialists on-call.

need a really good doc to take care of blister like cysts in the eye. I work in a research lab and i guess at some point of time chemical solution might have spilled over my eye.
The reason why i give away so much detail is that some one would be able to recommend a really really specialist eye doctor.

My family has been seeing Dr. Bruce Meyer for years. He used to be associated with the Lenscrafters at the mall. Now he has a private office at Newport Vision Center, 123 River Drive - validated parking I believe. He and his partner are optometrists, but Dr. Meyer also diagnosed a medical problem in one of my sons. Regarding the eye drop thing, don't blame the office for the wait involved there. That's just how long that particular exam takes - but you don't have to that every year.

can anyone recommend a good eye doctor in the area? Someplace relatively quick, efficient, clean and with a good, not overly priced selection of frames. also, someone who takes insurance?
I've been to pavonia associates-- doctors there are professional, but the wait can be interminable, often 2, once 3 hours,by the time you wait to get called, then see assistant, doctor, eye drops to widen pupils, etc.

There is an eye clinic in the former St. Francis Hopsital. It is on the first floor where the day care center is located. (Hamilton Park). Sorry I don't know the name of the place but it is recommended by some physicians.

JCNJ, if you are looking for an ophthalmologist and not an optometrist, I highly recommend mine:
Dr. Joanna Pruzon Ophthalmologist Hudson Eye Physicians & Surgeons LLC 600 Pavonia Ave. 6th Fl Jersey City, NJ 07306 (201) 963-3937 Not sure what you consider "local," but although her office isn't downtown, it is conveniently located by the Journal Square PATH station.

Yep - that's the building, it's primarily Dr's offices, where my GP is too.
Please note that Dr Bertolucci only deals with retinal issues, if you need a regular eye exam you probably just need an optometrist. I used to go to the Dr's at Newport Mall, they even recommended a good doc for LASIK.

Yes - that's the building, on Pavonia between JFK and 600 Pavonia,1 block from the JSQ bus depot, big white granite building, 7 or 8 floors, lots of medical offices. Parking looked tough but I couldn't drive anyway. Easy stroll from PATH.

Do you need to get a referral first? For glasses, I use the guys on Newark Ave
Family Eye Associates Savoy & Siegel Description - Optometrists Address - 127 Newark Ave, Jersey City, New Jersey ( NJ ) 07302-2812 Google Map Mapquest Map Telephone - (201) 333-2768 Two summers ago I sprang a leak in one retina. DR Siegel referred me to a practice in the big building on Pavonia by Five Corners. And they referred me to a DR ( in a GE modular trailer in the parking lot! ), who sent me to the Harkness Eye Institute of Columbia University, way uptown - arguably the best eye care center iin the nation. It's where they developed the laser for use in surgery. All were accessible by foot, bus, or subway, even fully dilated with huge shuffleboard shades, as in, hello? I'm BLIND?!?! It was a long summer but everything went fine. Good Luck!

yes, dr. savoy himself is a great optometrist and a nice man, but that somehow doesn't make up for the fact that the average wait time there is about 45 minutes to an hour, even with an appointment (that's been my experience at least). the waiting room is usually filled with children running around and a backup of cranky patients, and the staff there can be indifferent, rude, or just super-absentminded. the problem is that the bulk of his business is medicaid, so i don't really feel like he bends over backwards to make visiting his office a pleasant experience or keep his prices low. I agree. I really like the doctors there, but the overall experience of visiting that office may be too poor to make it worth it. The last time I was there, I had an appointment but I waited more than an hour in a waiting room with a bunch of sniffling runny-nose little kids crawling all over everything and everybody while their parents ate McDonalds and talked on their cell phones. I felt like I needed a bath in Lysol when I left. Also, the last time I was there, there was a woman filling in for one of the doctors on a Saturday, I believe. She was excellent, and she told me she had an office in the city. I would love to remember who she was/where her office was, I would go to her again.

Personally I have been going to Eyecare Contacts at the Newport Mall for years. For glasses, try Lensecrafters which is right next to Eyecare. if you're unhappy with your glasses you have 30 days to return them unlike Savoy. I bought a pair of glasses at Savoy & Siegel & never wore them.... They were a very bad fit for my needs, bifocals....never again.

Everybody has good things to say about Dr. Savoy down by Grove St. Path. But remember that since most of his business is Medicaid/Medicare (he is one of the few eyeglass places that will accept those programs): so he is very, very busy; and his prices are perhaps higher than you might expect, -- since Medicaid/ Medicare pay only a portion of a doctor's cost, the doctor makes up the differential by pricing high and somehow it all comes out even in the end. This is common practice. This same sort of thing happened at the old Dental Clinic at St. Francis, which was mostly gov't subsidied. If you happen to be eligible for benefits, the service was great; but if you were a private pay patient, you could do much better price- wise and time-wise at a private doctor. The best bet is to take the Path into 14th St. and right there on the corner of 13th and Sixth is Lenscrafters. Same prices as over here and way more recherche stuff to choose from.

Had a pretty good experience recently with the one at Sears. Nice guy, reasonable price for exam and low waiting.
I've been getting my specs made at BJ's for years now, real cheap. Best thing is they can order new lenses and just swap them out when they come in. Maybe lots of places do that, but not in my experience.

Savoy & Siegel on Newark Ave by Grove St is decent. The only problem is you ALWAYS have to wait. If you make an appointment, you just wait less. But, the turnaround has always been pretty quick on getting the glasses made.

Eye Doctor Recommendation

I went to the optometrist on Central Avenue and almost two weeks later my prescription/order has still not come in yet! That is outrageous. The optometrist at Newport Mall charges too much- $164 only for an eye exam. Any recommendations for GOOD, balanced optometric services? Thanks.
