I have to say I love this place. At first, I also thought it was a tad pricey but the reality is, it's a darn fine cup of coffee/latte. And, the temperature is perfect. Hot but you can drink it right away. I can't tell you how many times I've burned the roof of my mouth just trying to drink a latte.

I'm a very happy, repeat customer there. (And the almond croissants are delicious too.)

OK - my memory does sometimes play tricks but wasn't there a recent ordinance issued that says they CAN'T just boot at will - that the offender has to have prior unpaid tickets?

I'm not usually reactionary but I think this calls for getting Fulop involved. It's a systemic problem that is emblematic of the challenges we have making any QOL progress in JC.

I know - there are threads on failed carjackings and other horrible things happening that should take precedence. But, small quality of life improvements can start the momentum for great change.

That completely assumes that everyone lives near the PATH/Grove St. I'm much closer to Cafe Nia, Madame Claudes, White Star, etc than to anything on Grove St. The problem with Baker Boys/Cafe Nia has always more to do with the size and layout of the space, the type of food they had the space to cook and the hours they wanted to be open than with its location, IMO.

just the business for 550k? how much is the rent then?

It's for sale. Not for rent. You get the space, plus everything inside.

The business is for sale. You buy the fixtures, the liquor license, etc and the lease. Then you pay the rent and other overhead costs.

I think that "for sale" sign was for the business. And it's gone now. Did it just get stolen or did something new happen?

Let's not start this rumor. I think they take a vacation every year. When you're a chef/owner, you probably have to close to take a vacation.

There seems to be an unwritten rule in my neighborhood about how far down the driveway you can put something before it lands in the "free store." We had a handtruck on our driveway for several days, maybe even a week, but it was always up near the house. One evening, we inadvertently left it about halfway down the driveway. The next morning it was gone and our neighbor told us that someone on a bike had laid it over his handlebars and rode away with it.

Yes - my neighbor did try to stop him (yelling, running, etc.) but he was gone.

I imagine that he ran his bike into a tree trying to steer it with a big handtruck laid over it. It helps.

We've experienced this problem several times over the course of our 10 years in JC. It's been a variety of problems. 1) they read the meter wrong 2) they read the wrong meter 3) they were previously reading the meter wrong and now are making up the difference 4) they were previously reading the wrong meter and are now correcting it. You get the idea.

One year we didn't pay our utility bill for several months because they had been grossly overcharging us since we had moved in (that was when they were reading the wrong meter).

One more possibility (had this happen in a couple of places in JC and out), there is an outlet in someone else's apartment that is on your bill. You may not have noticed it until someone plugged in an AC unit/heater.

Phil / Andrea ? would you ever reconsider taking calls for pick-up orders??...

I'm guessing they may have been burned one too many times from people not picking their food up. Perhaps a credit card guarantee at the time of order?

They are not necessarily cheating anyone. Its an optional program, and they may choose not to participate.

That is correct. It's not automatic and it's not simple to take part in this program.

Not comparable spaces though, most likely. I do know someone who bought a 1-br co-op for $450K in Chelsea at 6th Ave but it was TINY and a co-op, not a condo.

I'm not sure if you're all having the same waitress or what but my experience could not be more different from what you're reporting.

Went there about a week ago with a friend in the late evening. We ordered the fried calamari and a pizza (and beer, of course). Waiter was attentive but not obtrusive. Calamari came out first - it was crisp and light. Pizza was out next, piping hot. Crust was thin, crisp and peppery - perfect as far as I'm concerned.

Overall - I very much enjoyed it. The space is beautiful and will be even better now that spring is here and those doors in the front can open up.

Relax. Have a beer. Take a load off.

The watch guy in Jemma Loan (the pawnshop) at Jersey & Newark is excellent. I think his name is David. Even though he's in the pawn shop, he's a separate business. He does a phenomenal job. My husband has had many watches repaired by him. He has great antique watches as well.

I have never heard of this. I never saw it on my pay stub over the last 3 years. Unless it is somehow absorbed into the NY state tax.

There used to be a so-called "commuter tax" for non-NYC residents but that was repealed several years ago. Is that what you're referring to, GE?

Cafe Nia is closed on Mondays - which I find odd for a cafe/coffee shop. (of course, I like eating out on Monday nights - not that easy in JC.) But I do want to point out that Baker Boys tried several times to be open for dinner and it went nowhere. I don't think that the area is that different yet. I think the problem there is also the lack of sufficient seating and a real kitchen.
