Re: ox restaurant

Even if a restaurant looks full, that doesn't mean they're making as much money. As someone in the industry, I can tell you that people are still eating out these days, but spending way less. When a restaurant is already operating on razor thin profit margins, if enough people drink cheaper wine, skip appetizers and share desserts, well then, that is enough to shut a place down. Also, they signed their lease at the peak of the real estate boom... I can only imagine what they were paying every month. Places like Sawadee probably have long term leases (or own the bldg) for a much lower price. I'm going to miss Ed and Nicole and the wonderful addition to the neighborhood they gave us!!! :(

Re: Powerhouse Arts District: artists win affordable units case - each valued at more than $400,000

I have a friend who lives in one of the "artist" condos in the PAD. They are not given to the artists for $1 FYI... her's was discounted to about 160k I think.

There are pretty strict rules and regulations regarding these condos. The artist has to have the down payment (which I think is 10%), prove they have been a citizen of JC for a certain number of years, prove their main source of income is from some form of the arts, make enough income to qualify for a mortgage, but not exceed the city's income cap for this program. From what I understand, quite a few JC residents signed up for this program and got themselves "pre-certified" as JC artists, but could not qualify for the rest of the terms. For each new PAD condo, they have a lottery for the units, b/c there is still a much bigger number of registered artists for this program than there are available units.

Also, another huge thing with these units is that the artist who wins one, qualifies for the mortgage, etc. can never sell the unit for a profit (other than maybe a standard cost of living increase or whatever). You can't sublet them either. So basically, if and when she moves, she is basically selling the condo back to the city at zero profit for them to sell to another artist.

What is wrong with people? A SECOND driver also may have hit her and kept on going?? WTF? He just swerved and kept going? Is getting to work on time really that important?

Also, I live near Grand and Marin, and while traffic tends to get a bit less crazy once Marin is crossed, people are still out of control with their speeding straight down to the waterfront. Last fall JC painted huge 25 MPH notices on the street on the block with the OLC school, but they do not work!! Ask the crossing guards.

That being said, I don't really know what the solution is. I guess this is fundamentally an issue of urban design. Perhaps more street trees, medians, brick pedestrian crossings etc. will give drivers a clue that they're in a residential neighborhood not the NJ turnpike.

I'm in agreement that the bonuses and salaries relative to the work are wildly out of porportion, but to abruptly yank that much money out is going to be very very bad for the rest of the economy. Sure, big shot banker can't buy a new sportscar this year -- boo hoo, I feel really bad for him -- but at least he probably has enough money saved up, a college degree, etc. in order to land on his feet and be able to survive comfortably. The people that truly suffer from the low and/or nonexistent bonuses this year are the multitude of service, retail and hospitality workers that make their living off the money these d-bags spend.

Healy: Have yourself a merry little Christmas with my CD
Thursday, December 18, 2008
It's the ultimate Jersey City stocking stuffer.

Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy - known for his "Folsom Prison Blues" rendition at this year's Irish Festival after-party - has now taken on the Christmas classics in a just-released CD.

Entitled "We Wish You a Merry Christmas," it includes such holiday standards as "White Christmas," "Let it Snow" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" as well as two non-holiday bonus songs: "God Bless America" and "The Way You Look Tonight."

Healy will distribute the CD, which features backup vocals by members of the St. Dominic Academy Choir, to senior citizens today at the Maureen Collier Senior Center, 335 Bergen Ave., during their annual Christmas party.

The CD was paid for by Healy for Mayor 2009.

AMY SARA CLARK

================================

Oh my god, whI might have to crash the senior citizen's party to get my hands on this. I thought this was a joke, but no, it's for real. The Way You Look Tonight??? Wow. Just wow.

I'm not sure which is the most horrifying aspect of Lipski's editorial:

That he doesn't seem to understand that editorials are indeed opinion pieces, and thus newspapers have the right to voice their opinions?

His astoundingly poor writing skills? I mean, come on... if you're going to run a piece in the paper, make sure you have a literate staffer help you out!

The fact that the children at CREATE are involved in this matter at all, whether or not they were coerced into holding a rally for him. This is not a story for young children to learn about at school.

Nope, for me, the thing that is the most horrifying is his flagrant unapologetic nature. Dude, you effed up. Apologize once and quietly disappear. You are only making things much much worse by arguing back. That editorial is the last nail in his political coffin.

GET HIM OUT OF OFFICE ASAP.

If the job market is weak, I think that, in most places, a young, single person with a moderately crummy job would be making about $30,000 year. I think someone like that without great job security ought to be paying less than 25% of income in rent, or about $625 per month, or $7,500 per year.

It seems to me that that's really quite a bit more than a studio costs in most of the country.

So, if the economy tanks, and the economy here becomes more like the economy in the rest of the economy, then maybe you need to pay just $75,000 to get your money back in 10 years.

On the other hand: if an investment holds half of its value over time, maybe that would be a good deal in a really rotten economy where all investments were doing poorly and inflation was running at 10 percent every year.

Alb, where are you getting your figures from? 30k for a single person in Downtown JC sounds really low to me. Don't forget that JC is a huge city, so the "average" income also includes a lot of poverty-stricken areas, which pulls down the overall average. I'd say 50k for a fairly young, single Downtown resident with an average education and job sounds more probable.

I'm on Minne's side here. Yes, they're annoying, but it's also their job. Do you think it sounds fun to approach random strangers again and again for probably less than $10/hour? Whatever happened to a polite "No, thank you."? Trying to trick them or ask if they're posing you a sexual question is rude and unnecessary.

Lipski was 'grinning and urinating,' says alleged victim by Charles Hack/The Jersey Journal Monday November 10, 2008, 8:56 PM One of the victims who Jersey City Councilman Steve Lipski allegedly urinated on last Friday night at a Washington D.C. nightclub said last night he initially thought someone had spilled beer down his leg. But when he looked up to the balcony at Nightclub 9:30, where a Grateful Dead tribute band was performing, Joe, a 22-year-old University of Utah student -- who only wanted to be identified by his first name -- said he saw Lipski "grinning and urinating." "He (Lipski) kind of had this grin on his face, and you could see his manhood in his hand," Joe said, who estimates 30 people on the dance floor were within range of a "long arc and stream of urine coming out into the crowd." As the smell of urine hung in the air, a couple of people "ran off screaming" when they realized what was happening, Joe said. The display went on for a "solid minute," Joe said. When bouncers finally stepped in, Lipski looked like a "deer caught in the headlights" and appeared "solemn" and "confused," Joe said. Lipski, who has refused to discuss details of what happened, was charged with simple assault. According to a police report, Joe and another concertgoer -- a 22-year-old female -- filed complaints against Lipski. Joe, who has an internship in D.C., said after he gave his statement to police, he returned to the concert. "It was annoying as hell, for sure, and quite disgusting," Joe said about the incident. "I have been to hundreds of concerts and I have never seen anything like that before."

When did it become okay to legislate morality? I try to envision someone reading that legislation "eliminates the right" and then clicking yes. What goes through their mind?

Great Melissa Etheridge essay!

Anyway, the above question she poses is what it boils down for me. I look at marriage as having two major faces: the religious and the legal. Firstly, for many people, marriage is a religious ceremony. If certain churches or religions want to rail against homosexuality, so be it. They can have their beliefs and I can have mine. No problem if they don't want to marry gay couples, since we all are free to choose how and where we worship.

But when did it become okay to pass LAWS that have to do with morality, and thus by extension religious and ethical beliefs? If you look at marriage from the second angle, the legal aspect of it all, banning gay marriage makes no sense. It just seems like a huge violation of church and state to me. How can the majority decide what is moral and what is not for the rest of us? All of the legal benefits that come with marriage... hospital visitation rights, paid family leave, tax breaks, etc... need to be available to everyone equally, since we're all taxpayers. Otherwise we should just end legal benefits for ALL couples, both gay and straight, and put marriage ceremonies back in the hands of religious/cultural institutions.

Did anyone else notice these? They seemed to be all over the sidewalk outside OLC, and running down all the way Marin to the PATH entrance. Some were kinda cryptic! I couldn't read all of them (had to be at least 10+ messages scrawled on the sidewalk) cuz I was running seriously late for work, but it seemed like an angry boyfriend or girlfriend leaving eff-off messages or something like that. Crazy and bizarre.

I'm surprised that only 20 states allow this. If you commit a crime, serve the time sentenced and are released, why shouldn't you be allowed to vote? Shouldn't we as a society allow people to make mistakes and accept their punishment? Obviously a lot of criminals continue to commit crime, but I don't think we should exclude someone from their basic rights once they've completed their time.

Car broken into - outside Gull's Cove

My friend's car was broken into sometime last week between Tuesday and Friday on the stretch of Marin right outside Gull's Cove, near the lightrail. (The car isn't used everyday, so I didn't notice until I went to go move it on Friday evening.) The passenger side window was punched out, and about $2 in toll booth change was missing from the change drawer. That's it b/c there was literally nothing else of value inside. :( There was a notification of a filed police report tucked into the driver's side mirror, but I'm wondering why the JCPD doesn't also try to contact the owner once they file the report?? Is it really that hard to get a phone number from the license plate number?

Also, even if you forgot your granny cart at home, couldn't find a cab service, and had no way of carrying everything you just bought home and absolutely HAD to borrow a cart, why is it so difficult to return them? I've never seen anyone pushing an empty cart to the store, though obviously most shoppers plan on returning at some point, right? I think what most people are taking issue with is the ignorant, "Oh, I'll just leave it on the street (or in my hallway!) and somehow it will magically disappear."

Interesting article. Coincidentally, I met a young Indian woman a few weeks ago who works for Lehman Brothers and is seriously asking to be transferred back to India. She said that the salary cut would be huge, but in relative terms, she felt an Indian position would offer more security, room for overall growth, and in cost of living terms, she'd still come out ahead in India... like as in her Lehman salary over there would cover a private driver, cook, housekeeper, etc. Now that says something when an Indian position seems safer and more logical! Our economy is officially in the crapper.

Ugh, I don't understand why there aren't more cops out in the *morning* looking for speeders. Hell, it'd be a great source of revenue for the city! I live on Grand Street, and let me tell you, drivers who get off the Turnpike then hurtle down Grand Street to Exchange Place have no clue that they've entered a RESIDENTIAL neighborhood and thus need to reduce their speeds a tad. I wonder if they speed through their suburban streets at the same speeds? Thank god for the crossing guards at the OLC school, or else I'd probably be dead.
