I have a Chase account. Last week I booked a hotel room overseas online for an upcoming trip, and Chase froze my account and called me with a fraud alert. I have to admit I was pretty impressed how quickly they were on it.

In Europe they use the cards with the chip in them, apparently they're harder to replicate. In the US, the banks say it's cost prohibitive to switch over to that system here, I guess it's still cheaper to pay out all these fraudulent transactions?

At Duane Reade and other places that let you 'blink' the card, I do that, somehow it feels more secure. I'm not sure that it is, but I figure at least the technology to steal your account info via a 'blink' would have to be a little more advanced than your basic magnetic strip reader.

CUSTOMERS IN HOBOKEN AND JERSEY CITY MAY HAVE DISCOLORED WATER

Water Is Safe For Drinking

Harrington Park, NJ, Aug 28, 2010, 6:45 pm

United Water customers in Hoboken and Jersey City may have discolored water this evening and throughout part of the day tomorrow.

The discoloration is caused by high levels of naturally occurring minerals in the water and a buildup of harmless sediment. Although the water is discolored, it poses no health risks and it meets safe drinking water standards. However, customers may prefer to wait until it runs clear before drinking or washing clothes or dishes.

According to John Hroncich, operations manager for United Water Jersey City, company crews have been flushing fire hydrants throughout the day in order to help clear the discolored water from the mains. In addition, the company has increased the amount of chlorine used to treat the water and has screens in place to help remove the sediment.

Hroncich explained that the discolored water was the result of an equipment problem at the water treatment plant in Boonton. This sent a large amount of water, known as a “spike,” through the aqueduct, which disturbed the sediment in the mains.

“We apologize for the inconvenience,” said Hroncich. “We are working to resolve the problem as quickly as possible.”

For the latest updates Jersey City customers can visit www.unitedwater.com/uwjc or call 1-800-575-4433. Hoboken customers can visit www.unitedwater.com/hoboken or call 1-800-422-5987.

Not to change the topic, but you know who else I've seen masturbating? Those dollar bus drivers.

They park on Columbus I guess between routes or something and I've seen, on 2 occasions, drivers masturbating in their empty buses. I couldn't tell whether it was the same driver twice or two different drivers.

Gross. Can't you wait until you get home?

Saw this and thought it was interesting/relevant:

http://www.seattlepi.com/local/422957_roosters06.html

Seattle wants to ban roosters. Not chickens or hens, just roosters. Because neighbors don't like hearing cock-a-doodle-do at sunrise I guess. (And because chicken/egg farming can be done without them.)

How does that work?

I grew up on a chicken farm, I'll field this one. The simple answer is: eggs come out unfertilized if there's no male (rooster) around.

Not to get to graphic, but think about a human woman. Putting aside the modern miracles of birth control and fertility drugs, during the years between puberty and menopause she'll release an egg each month (usually one, sometimes two, the case of fraternal twins.). She releases these eggs every month, regardless of whether there's a male around and whether she's having sex. Same goes for chickens but they release more eggs (not just one a month.)

So, the eggs we get in the grocery store or farmers market are from hens and there is no rooster involved. Of course you'll want to involve a rooster if you want to fertilize some eggs to make your next generation of egg laying hens.

Finally, someone commented on the smell of a chicken farm. I could be biased, like I said I grew up on a small chicken farm and I certainly didn't think my home smelled. But I think this depends on a few factors: how often the farm is cleaned, how big the farm is, and also whether chickens are being slaughtered/killed for meat. I don't think a typical egg farm smells much (as long as you're sweeping up the chickens' droppings) but I would agree that if you drive past a big Perdue farm it smells - I think you're smelling the chicken factory rather than the egg laying process. My parents had maybe 20-30 hens at a time, we swept out the hen house every day, and I don't think most people passing by even knew it was there.

I could be wrong, maybe people just didn't want to tell me that my house stunk...

Gotta Go To Mo's. (Modell's)

My boyfriend got his at Modell's on Chambers St in the city, that was back before their first game & the supply was dwindling, maybe they have more now. You can check the JC Modell's or at least call them?

I should add that she had other plants beside basil. I remember cherry tomatoes and chili peppers, but there were maybe 5-10 other kinds of plants there that I don't remember. Check it out.

I bought a basil plant today at the Grove St farmers market. The lady started the organic seedlings on her rooftop, I believe. I plan on leaving it in the pot on my fire escape, maybe a bigger pot just so it will be less likely to knock over or blow away in a storm.

Thank you for the update, I can't say I'm too surprised because the dog didn't look like she was in good shape, but I couldn't help but wonder and hope.

When I was there, there were A LOT of kids hanging around, hanging around in the street where the dog was, getting in the way of traffic, etc. If there is an issue with kids playing in the dog runs, and opening the gates, I hope it gets resolved.

There was one man who was on the ground with the pup, trying to help, I don't think he was related to the dog, just being a good samaritan.

Thanks again for the update and I'm sorry she didn't make it.

Last weekend (I think it was Saturday, but it could have been Sunday) we saw a dog that had been hit by a car near Hamilton Park. It was dusk so maybe 8-9pm, and the dog looked like a pug, but could have been something like a pug mixed breed, with a pink collar.

There were a lot of people there who were trying to help, so we backed off to let them do their job to take care of the dog. Now it's been a few days and I just keep wondering how the dog is doing.

I was wondering if anyone knows or has heard anything. I'm really hoping the dog is recovering well.

Thanks.

We went a few weekends ago and noticed the new menu. New owners, a few things seem to have changed.

Best change: they redid the bathrooms. Or, at least the ladies room.

Worst change: no more comfort zone sandwich.

I'm surprised to hear it was so slow - I guess with so many people. The only reason why I didn't join in was because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to keep the pace, I'm not a serious rider or anything - now I know for next time.

And I'm happy to hear the "missed connection" worked out - at least to the point of you 2 finding each other. Good luck!

Also, this is going to sound more like a craigslist missed connections than a jclist.com post, but could the guy wearing a blue shirt and dark blue shorts (or maybe black shorts?) that rode near me for part of the ride (close to the front) and also parked his bike near mine on the waterfront pm me? I'm a girl with brown hair and was wearing a white shirt, black shorts, and a backpack.

Aaaw, I love a good "missed connections" moment!

My house. I made the challah last night using buttermilk I got at the Van Vorst Farmers Market. And we have fresh strawberries. Dog friendly & kid friendly!

On a more serious note, Skinner's Loft has good french toast.

I took the PATH about an hour ago, (around 7:40 a.m.), Grove to WTC, no delays, didn't seem more crowded than usual.

I think they ran 2 WTC trains back to back - because when I came down the stairs I heard someone say "The WTC train just came through a minute ago," and then another WTC train came pretty quick after that. Not sure if they were just trying to get alleviate delays or coincedence or what, it happens sometimes.

After I got to the city around 8:30, my mother called me to tell me that the PATH trains were delayed. She often calls with things she sees on the news that might effect the city but wouldn't generally effect me (e.g. There are traffic delays near the UN - but I work downtown), this one she got right but she was just too late.

Somewhat related, why don't the USPS mail carriers in JC wear uniforms? If you see someone going into and out of apartment buildings with boxes and mail, it would be easier to know if they're legit if they're wearing a uniform instead of a t-shirt and shorts.

I agree that they're just guys hanging out. If they were drug dealers, they're not doing much in the way of hustling. If I'm thinking of the same old men, more than once I have seen one of them loaded in the ambulance later at night - I assumed he had just passed out, but I don't really know.

Quote:
I've travelled throughout the world, and every country on every continent I've been to has elderly men who choose (and it is their right) to "hang out" in public where they wish. Unfortunately in this country we don't have plazas which would serve as a public meeting place for them.

I think we do have plazas, not many, but a few. They could hang out near the Grove Street plaza, or even that tiny "park" at the corner of Jersey and Newark. Even across the street from there, by the bank, there are a few benches and a wider sidewalk. And then there's the bigger parks like Van Vorst. I think the reason why they hang out near Helen's or the liquor store across the street is simply because it's closer to the liquor store.

I live on Columbus and they already started taking down some trees around Coles/Varick last year, allegedly as part of the Newark Ave. redevelopment. (??? Maybe they had the wrong street???)

I think it looks terrible without the trees, it really took away from the neighborhood feeling. I don't really understand - they're going to take away the things that make the neighborhood people friendly - pedestrian walkways, places where people can stop and talk to their neighbors, turn it into living on a highway, and then wonder where all of the crime comes from?

Please, tell me what to do to stop this "plan" from becoming a reality.

Maybe they read JCList.

Walked by today and the gates were open, and there was a sign out on the sidewalk mentioning Hot Coffee and 35 Different Kielbasas. I haven't been in there in a while, but I think I'll go back in and check it out, maybe this weekend.

I pick them up and carry them into work with me. You see, as a not-for-profit, we're severely underfunded and every little bit counts... (USPS could learn a thing or two about saving pennies.)

Having zero previous gardening experience, I'd like to try to grow some basil this year to make my own pesto. Probably in a container. When is the best time to do it? Is it too early? It's feeling like spring already, but I guess I wouldn't be surprised if it snowed one more time.

I walked past a car with a broken window Tuesday night about 10-11pm. Columbus between Jersey & Coles. I called the JCPD non-emergency number thinking that since it had a JC parking permit in the window, maybe they could contact the owner - at least to let him get anything of value out for the night, and it was raining a little bit. They sent police out, but I don't know if they contacted the owner or not.

I had checks stolen from me too once. (Those "convenience checks" that come with your credit card statements.) They wrote out $1800 in checks.

I found the thief and handed them over to the JCPD. JCPD did not care. At all. They seemed mad that I was trying to make more work for them or something.

I suggested that maybe it was a federal crime, they could turn it over to the Postal Police? There was actually a sign in the Police Dept telling them to call the Postal Police for certain types of case, but they didn't like me telling them how to do their job. They told me not to worry about it. I never heard anything more about it from them - but plenty between my credit card company and my credit reports.

Edited to Add: I did get the bank (Capital One at the time) to stop including the checks in the statement. I now have another account with a different credit card company and they won't stop sending the checks. They always say they'll stop, but they don't.

I'll jump in in support of Sushi Tango, I think their sushi is excellent and I've never had a meal there that was anything less than great.

(It doesn't hurt that I only live a block away so I can have a few cocktails without worrying about how I'm going to get home.)

Still not sure if we should bring 8 quarts of the same soup or 4 quarts of two different soups, I guess it will depend on how much time I have this week to make a second soup.

I think it's better to have more variety (i.e. 4 quarts each of 2 different soups), but either way, I'll look forward to seeing you at the Soup Swap!

As for labels & ingredients, you can print up a card to go with the soup or write it on a label if you'd like. I always bring extra labels in case people forget to label their soups before the swap, but I will say that it's easier to get the labels to stick to the plastic containers before they're frozen.

See you Sunday!

As far as knowing where the soups came from and what is in them, in the "telling of the soup" we each introduce ourselves, and tell a little bit about our soup including what is is in it.

This can help you avoid choosing a soup that may contain ingredients you are allergic to, don't eat, or simply don't like. But, yes, there is an element of trusting your neighbors involved.

Just a reminder, one week until Soup Swap. Rainy day, now is a great time to get cooking.

I've gotten some good responses, I expect we'll have a nice turnout next Sunday.

If you have any questions, please let me know, or let me know what you're cooking up!

That's crazy, me too! But I don't think you live in my building. Last night I woke up with a terrible headache from the smoke.

We got this cheapish Arm & Hammer fan / purifier from Bed Bath & Beyond. We put that on, and it sort of helped a little.

Something like this:
http://www.jardenstore.com/productdet ... aspx?BrandId=494&pid=1195

Between that and spraying some NeutraAir... yeah, basically still sucked, to be honest.

I think it's the ice cold weather - people who ordinarily will smoke outside think its too cold to stand outside and decide that opening a window (or doing nothing at all) is good enough. It's not.

Let me know if you come up with anything better.

I'm waiting for FedEx right this minute. They're supposed to deliver by 3 pm, so I've basically been just waiting around all day.

If I go downstairs and find one of those "we missed you..." tags, I'm going to scream.

Guess I'd better go check.

Well, I was trying to avoid telling the DWI civilian complainant story, and we've come a long way from coffee on the PATH, but here it is:

A few years ago, this case was from a nearby town. The charge was DWI where the driver was alleged to have hit a few parked cars down a main street of the town. A few different people had called 911 and given a license plate, a few also gave descriptions. The police tracked down that license plate, went to the house, the car was in the driveway. Inside the house, there were 2 women (late 50s-ish) there who had been drinking, but they basically said "We've been here in the house all night drinking. We may be drinking but we haven't been driving." They had a few empty wine bottles, but they said they had been just drinking in the house. The woman said maybe her son had taken the car for a little while, she wasn't sure, sometimes he does without telling her, but as far as she knew the car had been in the driveway all night. The police arrested one of the women.

Anyway, now it's trial day, there are a few police off their beat sitting around the courtroom all morning, the witnesses who called 911 come in, this woman has been arrested and she swears she hasn't been driving. The problem really, was that all of the witnesses gave different descriptions: an old white man, a young white woman, a young black male, an unknown age white male. Out of the 5 witness, no two could give even a similar description, and none matched the woman who was arrested.

So, at the end of the day of trial, the woman was found not guilty. All of these officers had been off the streets all day, all of the witnesses had given up a day of work or school or whatnot to be there. Kind of for no reason.

That may be worth it in a case with property damage, suspected DWI, etc. but the police probably don't think it's worth it for most traffic offenses. That's probably their main reason for not taking down your complaint.

They just issue the ticket to the registered owner and then let the owner come to court and dispute it if they want to say "It wasn't me driving, it was my brother." But in terms of tollbooths, I think most people probably just pay it and then take up the money issue with whoever was driving their car. (e.g. rental cars - the company pays the fine and then bills the renter.)

The first red light cameras in NJ just went up last week in Newark, so I haven't seen tickets coming out them yet, but I'm sure that will be an issue soon.

I would only be guessing that maybe they could say that the registered owner is responsible unless they could prove someone else was driving, but like I said, I would only be guessing at this point.

The officers that I could hear explained, "This sign has always been here, but there have been complaints and now we have to enforce the rule." You mean to say, if I want to get the police to enforce the law (e.g. speeding, running stop signs), all I have to do is complain? Where do I sign up? Who do I get in touch with?

I don't mean to say anything. I'm quoting the PATH officer. I don't know what they "mean to say" I just know what they actually said.

Where do you sign up? Who do you get in touch with? I don't know, ask the person who complained how they complained. I don't know who it was. I just posted what I heard and saw.

A civilian can be a complainant on a traffic violation. I only say that because I've seen it on DWI cases but I've never seen it on any other kind of traffic violations (red lights, speeding, etc.) I don't know if the police just don't want to be bothered going out & serving the ticket or what.

The other issue is: just because you've seen the license plate, you can't necessarily ID the driver. I.e. police issue tickets to drivers, not to cars or license plates.

In other words, you give the license plate. The officer looks up the plate, finds the address, and goes out to the home. A guy answers the door and says "I wasn't driving, maybe my brother was..." and the other guy says "I wasn't driving, maybe it was my brother." I suppose they could write tickets to both of them, and leave it up to the court to sort it out, but that seems like a bit of a hassle, and you're knowingly wrongfully prosecuting at least one person (if not both.)

I happened to be hanging out there for a few minutes. (I was with walking my boyfriend, he got something, went back home, and since it was cold out I told him I'd meet him downstairs.)

Quote:
Maybe. Maybe not. Let's just say I wasn't the only one that was stopped...they had a bucket-full of coffee cups in front of them. I was the one that asked the officer why I had to throw my unopened Dunkin D coffee into the trash and he replied: "Because we're the police and we said so!" Obviously I figured it was an argument I couldn't win (especially without my coffee) so I tossed my coffee into the wastebasket. At the time, I was a bit upset that I had to toss a perfectly good cup of coffee (as any coffee addict would be), but I got over it in about 5 minutes.

Anyway, in the 5 or so minutes I was watching the officers seemed pretty apologetic. They told people "Hey, sorry, no coffee allowed. You can hang out here and drink it or throw it out but you can't go through the turnstiles with it." A few people asked why. The officers that I could hear explained, "This sign has always been here, but there have been complaints and now we have to enforce the rule." I don't know if I was there earlier or later than you, and they chilled out or whatever, but they seemed pretty chill around 8 a.m.

At least two women said "I just bought this" and the officer said "If you can put it in a bag or something, you can go." The woman was trying to wrap it in a plastic bag and hold it upright in her purse, at least while she got through the turnstiles. I noticed one man who had a travel mug, the officer seemed to notice him and then let it go without stopping him.

As for photography, MTA, and whatnot. I work in the criminal courts in NYC. I have never seen anyone arrested for photography in the subway or PATH (for PATH, I would only see the case if it happened on the NY side, obviously.) I've seen plenty of people arrested or issued a summons for violating NYC Transit Rules, e.g. passing between the cars of a moving subway, taking up more than one seat on a subway, and smoking in the station. As for PATH arrests, the only cases I can remember seeing are for smoking in the PATH station (the only two I remember seeing both were at 33rd, but that may have been a coincidence) and for theft of services (hopping the turnstile). So, there you have it.

From what I can see, the PATH officers are less concerned with making arrests than just following out their orders, whatever they may be. To me, that's a welcome change from the NYPD.

It's plenty cold out, I think it's time to start talking about Soup Swap 2010.

The "official" national Soup Swap date is Saturday, January 23, 2010. We've always had the J.C. Soup Swap on a Sunday in the past. We could break from tradition and do it on a Saturday, we could do Sunday the 24th, or we could try something completely different... I'm open to suggestions.

I only want to do it if people are interested and we'll get a decent turnout.

So, speak up if you're interested, let me know what day works for you.

As for locations, far the past 3 years we've always had it at Barrow Mansion. I've been paying to rent the room there, but if we could find somewhere that would let us have a little space for free, I'd donate that money to the food pantry too. It takes about a half-hour to an hour total, we don't take up a lot of space, and if we had it at a restaurant, bar, coffee shop or something, maybe we'd all order drinks or food.

Talk it out, let's hear your great ideas...

Here's what I'm confused about :
The title of this thread is Quote:
Police took my coffee at Grove St. PATH station.

But the OP writes: Quote:
was summarily asked to drink it or discard it this morning by the police.

So... they didn't take it from you?

I agree with the no eating or drinking rule. I'm not saying I've never brought a drink on the train, but I never do it during a rush hour and, if the police told me I couldn't have it, I'd live with it because that's the rule.

It's not a law, some buildings or landlords put it in their rental contract, some don't. We last looked for apartments maybe 2002-03, some apartments had that as a clause, some didn't.

So, legally, you probably have no leg to stand on there.

Socially, you might as well try approaching your neighbor in a friendly way, maybe put it in terms of blaming the building for not being well sound-proofed, not blaming him. (After all, it's not his fault, is it?) Maybe when he realizes how loud it is, he'll take off his shoes. Or not. One ex-neighbor of ours said "Yeah, that's why I got the top floor, so I don't have to listen to other people." He was a jerk, but since then we've had good neighbors.

Good luck.

I'm probably going to join Brick Haus this weekend. They're having a special: $0 initiation, $69 per month. I figured I'll get in before the New Year's Resolution rush.

I was wondering if this was their best rate or if they might have better specials around New Year's, but based on what I'm seeing here, this seems like a good rate.

Just wanted to see if anyone has any updated/more recent opinions about Brick Haus before I commit.

Reviving an old (but classic) topic...

Most importantly, does anyone know of a place where they'll let you look at the photo (like, on a screen?) before they print it? I don't want to be stuck with a crappy passport photo.

I visited The Saffron pre-auction. I thought, as someone else may have mentioned, that the layouts were odd and the bedrooms were tiny. I like to imagine a guest room with room for a daybed and a small desk, in these you'd probably have to choose between the two. Even some of the main bedrooms seemed very small - you'd likely be limited to just a bed and not much else. There was one unit with a strange alcove thing to one side. The layouts were weird, and, to me at least, not very appealing.
