If you're willing to venture out of JC, I just got my eye exam and contacts in chinatown (88 Optical, i think). Eye exam (contact + glasses) was about $90, and they have a deal when I went (1 month ago) where eye exam (for contact lense) + 1 yr supply was for $275. very clean and professional shop. and now that I'm thinking about it, I don't think there was tax either...

edit: there's also of course the usual $25 / $50 rebate from the lense manufacturer depending whether you're existing / new customer.

I second Cohens--I was there yesterday and the doctor was great. You pay extra for retina test --but you can option out. The appointment which was for contacts was $99. Call for an appointment.

I always end up going to Cohen's Optical in Newport mall and never had a problem. The woman optometrist (not sure if there's more than one) was very awesome and I would definitely recommend her. They also have coupons online, which they will honor. If you're going for a contact exam, it's a bit more.

Also, don't go on the weekends as they tend to get a lot of walk-ins and you'll be waiting for hours.

Hey JCListers,

Wondering if anyone could recommend a good optometrist in the JC area. Since I don't have vision coverage, I'm looking for a (preferably competent) eye doctor with reasonable rates for basic exams/contact lens fitting & Rx (which probably wouldn't be covered anyway, but you get the idea).

Willing to expand my radius outside JC if need be. Thanks.

Does anyone have any experience with Associated Eye Physicians and Surgeons? They recently relocated to Hamilton Park.

Our family sees Dr Derienzo's partner, Dr. Bruce Meyer. Excellent optometrist.

Dr. Dereinzo at Newport. Let the office know that you don't have any insurance coverage. They may be able to work with you cost wise.

Great doc.

Besides the ones mentioned below, does anyone has other recommendations?

I need an eye exam and possibly contacts / glasses, and have no insurance (so someone that's reasonable - but also good).

TIA.

Looking for a good eye doctor? I go for fairly regular checkups once or twice a year. Would like something local if possible.

Thanks!

i've been to newport eyecenter and thought the examination was very thorough and I highly recommend it. the frames I thought were very pricey though. Maybe get your examination there and take the prescription elsewhere? I go online for my glasses now. Can be a bit tricky sizing things correctly, but once you get the hang of it, you'll save a boatload of money.

Expanding the inquiry a little bit: Did anyone here ever have LASIK, where did you have it, how did it work out, and what did it cost you?

I'll probably ask my optometrist who they recommend, but I'm thinking about budgeting it into my FSA for next year and I wanted an idea of actual price.

Thanks!

Just moved here and need to find new doctors in JC.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good general practitioner, gyno (prefer a woman) and eye doctor in downtown JC or Hoboken?

Thanks in advance.

I loved Dr. Moore as well, but unfortunately he is no longer nearby. He was commuting from far away and finally decided he couldn't do it anymore and sold the business. I did go back to Cohen's late last year and tried the new doctor and I liked her, can't remember her name at the moment. She was young, but very professional and personable.

Thanks!

If Paige Hershkin is still around (was at 1 McWilliams Place, by the old hospital), I recommend her.

I normally only judge a doctor based on intelligence/competence and willingness to communicate that knowledge without regard to bedside manner.

But I'm pretty sensitive about anything involving the eye, had never been to any kind of eye doctor before and ended up needing every test they have, and probably needed the same treatment as a scared 9 year old. There's no way I could have tolerated it without her 'bedside' manner.

The person who put the eyedrops in may have warned her unless I was that obvious, and I'm sure it's noted in my file unless her memory is amazing (or I'm the first adult to ask things like "this machine isn't going to poke me in the eye is it?"). So you should probably warn her first.

I've been going to Myoptics in Hoboken for a while now. The doctor there is great. I switched to a Dr. in Manhattan a while back and he made me get these special contacts for my astygmatism and they were very uncomfortable and expensive.

I went back to Myoptics and the doctor there (I think his name is Dr. Bryant, but I"m not sure) told me that there was no need to correct the astygmatism since it was so slight. So I feel comfortable with him, he seems very honest.

Dr. Seigel and Dr. Savoy of Savoy & Seigel are both great--best eye doctors I've been too. They are on Newark just off Grove. And Ira, the guy who fits your glasses is a hoot too. One note: avoid Saturday mornings as they are very busy.

I need a new Optometrist. I loved Dr. Moore at the Cohen's Fashion Optical in the Newport Mall. He was really nice and very professional. I've been wearing glasses for most of my life and have astigmatism. Other doctors have given me the wrong prescription on several occasions, but I've never had an issue with Dr. Moore.
I just found out that Dr. Moore left Cohen's last year. :(
Anybody know if he's still in the area?
