Re: Advice for dealing with contractors, permitting and inspections

We may need to slightly expand the closet from the front, but we don't need to knock down a wall. I don't think we will be touching anything structural. We will need to take up a portion of the kitchen floor to run the pipes. Paying in thirds is a good tip. Thanks.

Advice for dealing with contractors, permitting and inspections

I'm looking for any tips/advice on doing a small renovation project properly (everyone licensed, getting permits for everything). I'm getting so much conflicting information (not to mention all over the place bids) from different contractors.

The project is to run water/electrical to a closet behind the kitchen in order to install a washer and dryer. I am not sure if I need an architect as I have been told yes from one contractor, but the other contractors have not mentioned using an architect at all.

I was also told that the building as it is is not zoned for a "laundry room" and that the architect would need to apply for that change. I was not aware of this process and I'm not sure if that is the same as getting the permits or a whole separate thing?

If anyone has any advice or experience with this process I would appreciate any info. Thanks!

Are there any streets by you that don't have alternate side? During vacation I always leave my car on Morgan St. downtown (no alternate side) and have not had a problem.

Also, Canis Minor, the pet store at Newport, will have their pet parade/contest 10/24 from 12-3.

Can anyone clarify when the Paulus Hook children's/pet parade will be? It's listed on their website: http://www.paulushook.org (scroll down) but it says "Saturday 10/31" on the flyer and then "Sunday, 10/31" underneath... I assume the Sunday is a typo?

I don't have parking in my building ... there are several buildings like mine which have 3-4 apartments per building and street parking. It's not one of the luxury buildings. It seems ridiculous that I'm not entitled to a zone 4 permit... since you guys have explained the issue (thank you) I think I'm not even going to try to call the parking authority, I'll just reach out to the councilwoman.

Right... I don't care about parking on Steuben, but I have lived on Steuben since 2009 and have always had a zone 4 permit. Now they are saying they won't give me a zone 4 permit. You're saying this is is correct/allowed? I don't understand why they would send me a renewal notice and then deny my permit. It's for the $15 zone 4 permit.

Steuben St parking

Hi, I wanted to see if anyone knows anything about this:

I'm a resident of Steuben St.... recently received a renewal application for a zone 4 permit. Sent everything in, and got a letter back saying that as of 10/1 residents of Steuben St are no longer being offered Zone 4 permits. According to this letter, I can choose to buy a $125/month permit to park on Steuben (no) or "find other means of private parking." I plan to call the parking authority on Monday... but as a resident of JC wouldn't I be entitled to a zone permit in the zone I live in? This seems like some BS to me.

Thanks! Interesting.. Did not know that.

The houses were turned into multi-dwelling during the depression when there was a need for extra income.

on this topic, does anyone know how the historical 3-4 story apartment buildings around JC used to be set up before they were renovated? I found drawings of one on erie street here. I find it interesting that the kitchen was in the basement!

A lot of the buildings downtown were built in the 1880's and 1890's (according to Hudson county tax records). Did they typically hold multiple families or just one family?

Another rescue organization, where I got my dog, is Animal Lifesavers. They're based out of Palisades Park and have the dogs in foster care. They are usually at adoption events on the weekends at Petsmart in North Bergen. Most Petsmarts I believe have dogs for adoption there on weekends, brought by volunteers from rescue organizations.

My sister used this dog walker for her foster dog and was very happy with him: http://www.aplusdogwalking.com/

Also, some daycares may be affordable... for example Club Barks winds up being $20-22 a day if you buy enough days in a package, and you can leave the dog there for the whole day. Not a bad deal when some dog walkers will charge around $15.

Our dog attends daycare there a few days a week and we really like it... He always comes home tired at the end of the day. Haven't used the boarding.

There's also this new daycare (with boarding also) that just opened, haven't heard any reviews yet though: http://clubbarks.com/

Went in last night for a drink. They were out of a lot of beers, but was still able to get something I hadn't tried before. Although we didn't eat, the food menu and the food we saw looked good, but kind of expensive.... $10 for a grilled cheese and $14 for some of the salads. It was a cool place though and it started to fill up a little around 9:30-10. Would definitely go back for a drink.

yeah, I live here also and always walk the dog at night. Steuben is well lighted. Only thing that ever happened in my 2.5 years here is that my iPod was stolen out of my car, the window smashed, when I left it parked on warren by those empty lots over the weekend. that was pretty much my own dumb fault, as I left it in plain view. Also, that happened to be a part of that random spree where some guys stole a pickup and went around smashing car windows and stealing stuff downtown, so it was kind of a freak thing.

oh shoot... I just sent it in w/a check for the 3 year license. I have a current JC license and got it last January, but it was only good for a year, so figured I should get another one around now to stay current. I asked for the 3 year because the rabies vaccine I just got is good until January of 2015. I guess if anything they will give me a license that is good until 2014?

Anyone have any information on getting a 2012 License? Found this form online but it says 2011:
http://www.cityofjerseycity.com/uploa ... e_2011English.Spanish.pdf

Will it will be accepted if I just send that one in? Just got my dog's rabies vaccine so want to get the licensing out of the way for the year. Thanks for any help.

I use Newport Animal Hospital, I have had a good experience there. It's small, but you can usually get an appt. right away. I've seen two different vets there and they were both good. It's $48 for the office visit and then whatever meds/shots you need after that, but they will tell you the cost of everything up front so you can decide.

I knew some people that lived here last year (since moved) and they said they were one of the only ones paying full rent. I believe there were some problems with water leakage in some apts.

Imo, Sawadee is the best of this type of restaurant in the area - love that place!! I think Box has an advantage in that its BYOB - definitely a consideration for me when I don't have a lot of money to spend. I think More also may be on par with Box, I guess I like More a little better, but need to try more of the same dishes at Box.

Its nice that this place is BYOB. I went once and liked my meal, although there were only 2 options for me since I'm a vegetarian. Others didn't like it as much as I did. But I would def. give it a try and see for yourself!

I've been to Newport Animal Hospital a few times and had a good experience. The doctor called to check up on my dog to see if the medication she gave was working. I think they are expensive for some tests and procedures but I would consider the office visit fee reasonable... last year when I went it was $48.

wow, really, a corkage fee? I was looking forward to trying this place but don't think I will after that. I like BYOBs because I SAVE money... that's disappointing.
