We're right near Healy's Cake Lush campaign office. And yet, for the entire campaign season, my block has only had Fulop signs. But this morning, surprise! It looks like all of a sudden everyone's changed their minds. And so strange, that there was a mass change of heart juuust after everyone left for work today...

From my own recent experience I suspect something much more innocent is going on. We requested a sign, and I think it got put up next door by mistake (similar things happen to us all the time, as we live in an ex-church building -- delivery guys/FedEx don't realize it's a residence etc.). But before we could inform the campaign, the sign was a victim of the vandals that destroyed every Fulop ad on our block.

They're trying. From the article: "Egan said the theater is in the midst of a roughly $400,000 stage-equipment upgrade that could be finished within a year and lead to more activity at the Loew’s." They haven't done that many live shows because it previously required renting and setting up all the equipment for each one. A few months ago they managed to buy a whole set of modern stage gear from a theatre company that went under, and they're in the process of installing it all.

Uh, Newport is definitely better than what was there before it (or, well, what wasn't -- relevant link via Reddit today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72h3tA4DzwA ). I don't think anyone said otherwise? But there's a difference between building stuff where there wasn't anything and destroying existing neighborhoods, which is what resident troll crazyforjc suggested all newcomers want to do. All I was saying was that not everyone moving to downtown wants to (or can afford to) live in a shiny new high rise. And it's not like we sit around fantasizing about knocking down all the historic brownstones. We worry about getting priced out just like everyone else.

I found the Healy campaign's comments insulting and divisive, and I'm by no means "corporate" -- I'm an animator who first moved to JC as a broke college student, so about as far from a finance worker as you can get. I've been here almost eight years now; this city is my home and I care about it. I definitely don't want to turn it into Newport, and I don't know anyone else who does either. But being told by my government that I'm not welcome stings.

If proximity is your priority, P&S Fabrics is walkable from the WTC PATH station. It's not a huge shop but the selection is decent and the prices are pretty good. It's also a good place to get cheap yarn.

Yikes. My boyfriend and I are both VM customers and we've had no problems. The reception is way better in our apartment (we live downtown) than it was with my old T-Mobile phone. I did have trouble with the initial activation process though, and I can confirm the phone support is totally useless. But if you buy your phone from Radio Shack or similar you can just walk into a store when you have issues. Would recommend the HTC One V or Evo V 4G, depending on how big a phone you want... There have been great deals on both lately.

I like their chak-chak. It's sort of like a giant rice krispie treat made of fried noodles and honey? We'd never had it before and brought it to a party... once people figured out how to eat it it was very popular.

Anything with the kitchen open late, preferably 24 hours.
I'd also love a place to get reliably good ramen. The boyfriend suggests small plates with a "killer cocktail program." My secret, totally impractical dream is for a true British jacket potato shop. They just serve baked potatoes with a variety of toppings. If we had one I'd eat lunch there every day. (Seriously why is this not at least a food truck yet?)

There's a company that does bus trips from Hoboken, but one of your best bets is the Metro North Ski Train deal to Thunder Ridge. It's not anything close to resort-size, but it's fun for a day and a great deal. (Think it's $50 for train + shuttle to slopes + all-day lift ticket?) You buy the package deal from one of the MTA machines at Grand Central, hop on a train, and you're skiing.
EDIT: Some links: http://thunderridgeski.com/thunder-ri ... o-north-ny-ski-train.html http://mta.info/mnr/html/getaways/outbound_thunderski.htm

Microcenter is great. I've been a big fan of theirs ever since they ran out of an off-brand TV I ordered and sent me an LG for the same price. They also have tons of small parts and fiddly computer bits. J&R is probably your best bet nearby though. They're pretty reliable and stuff's often cheaper in-store than online.

I'm a young woman and live right near that intersection. I've never felt unsafe walking back from the train, even in the middle of the night. There are usually plenty of people about walking dogs and whatnot. That said, it's a city, it's always worth staying alert. There are a lot of nice people and nice apartments (it actually feels like a neighborhood), and VVP itself is lovely. There's a farmer's market on Saturdays and in the summers you get people practicing Shakespeare in the gazebo.

There are one or two trains at rush hour that are super-expresses and only make one or two stops between Newark and Trenton. If you can catch one of those it's a fast trip! Unfortunately the SEPTA trains from Trenton to Philly are only timed out to meet southbound NJT trains, so the trip back can sometimes take twice as long.

You can also take NJ Transit -> SEPTA. It's a little more expensive than the bus but certainly comfier and more reliably on-time.

CVS in Hoboken has one of those Dr. Scholls machines that measures your foot issues and tells you which inserts to buy. Not exactly a prescription, but a decent option. (Particularly for people like me who cracked their custom orthotics in half and now have health insurance that won't cover podiatrists!)
