About ten years ago, I was trying to coax my girlfriend (now wife) to move over to JC from Tribeca. We were out one spring afternoon, walking through Van Vorst park and for the first time she saw Jersey Ave. In mock horror, she said "Can you imagine having to write JERSEY avenue, JERSEY city, New JERSEY as your return address?"

Needless to say, she's gotten over it and enjoys the better things JC has to offer while learning to ignore the not-so-great. Of course - there are always things like the Easter Bunny brawl at Newport Mall to remind you where you are...

We lived on Jersey Ave for several years and I loved saying that address, LOL... My husband and I always envied the owners of 666 Jersey Ave ;)

I just moved across the country and I miss writing this address, though sometimes I'd get lost halfway through and forget if I was writing the street, city or state...

Lower number channels used to be more valuable, but that was in the days of analog TVs with dials -- VHF channels (2-13) were generally easier to tune in than UHF (14-83).

It's actually a little odd that JC had a channel 1 at all, since OTA analog TV started at channel 2. If you'd like a very nerdy explanation as to why that was the case, this page is interesting: http://www.tech-notes.tv/History&Triv ... annel%20One/Channel_1.htm

Anyone have any idea why they insist on showing those frustrating scrolling messages on the screens in exchange place showing when the next scheduled train is, rather than just showing the actual time until the next train?

Even if the data isn't available for some reason to show the actual time, they should at least change the scrolling messages for a shortened static one. The words that cause it to need to scroll are completely superfluous.

Yes, the pointless scrolling drives me nuts! You could fit all the upcoming trains at the bottom of the screen if you abbreviate them, e.g. 33/2 min, WTC/3 min, JSQ/6 min, NWK/5 min.

My guess: they're trying to say "hey, this is an upscale place" to set the initial vibe, but after they've been open a while they're not going to be so strict. We wandered in a few days ago pretty late (menu changed over to late-night menu while we were there), and I'm pretty sure at least one of us was in jeans?

Food was good!

That screenshot is awesome. Really puts things in perspective.

I think it's red = under construction, orange = approved and yellow = proposed? And shouldn't there be proposed towers on the Metropolis Towers site too?

Okemo is great. Definitely a nice place to learn -- lots of nice wide green trails.

We stayed at this place a couple years ago, and it was a perfectly reasonable hotel: http://www.castlehillresortvt.com/the-pointe-hotel/

There's a hidden FedEx Kinko's over in Exchange Place, but I don't think they're open weekends. The one in Hoboken is open though, and it's right near the train station.

Pretty sure the JSQ closure last night is the first time the PATH has run shuttle buses (even if it took them hours to get the system in place). Is this a new arrangement with another transit operator? Is there a chance they would run buses from, say, WTC-EXP in the event of an outage?

The last time I looked at it, I thought it was OK. Not particularly breathtaking, nor horrifying. It is, perhaps, a bit plain/flat looking. My only qualm with the building is what was reported in the news article. That is, that the builder chose to deviate from the pre-approved plans without having to go through the Planning Board and/or Historic Commission, only getting approval from City planners. Given the sordid history of nepotism, cronyism and corruption in JC, you would think that the administration would be wise enough to avoid being seen as that.

+1. I think the building itself looks ok -- it also doesn't have all of its finishing touches yet. I kinda like that it doesn't compete with City Hall. But the revision process isn't cool.

We had six elections in 2013, which is just totally absurd -- and partly Christie's fault for making the senate race a special election instead of part of the general. Voted in all of them, and would have much, much preferred one election with more races. (Well, one primary/general/runoff series -- AFAIK no one's said anything about removing the potential for a runoff if no one gets 50% of the vote?) In all those elections, I never once waited in line except for the general, when there was one person ahead of me.

I hate the layout of our ballots too, but that's a separate issue. It's the hardest to read I've ever seen (and I learned to vote on the infamous Florida "butterfly ballot"!).

I don't think they're putting an elevator on the Marin side at all. From an article about the ADA compliance lawsuit: "In a document filed Thursday, the Port Authority agreed to construct an elevator at the southwest entrance to the station and a passenger vertical platform lift on the west side of the station."

As I've seen a few others point out, overnight PATH service is also a safety issue -- how many of the people you see on the late-night weekend trains would you be comfortable seeing get behind the wheel of a car?

This happened to me a couple months ago. They told me to fill out the online form and in the request for delay section explain that I had just served. Got a little card in the mail a few days later saying I was excused.

The committee report actually goes as far as to suggest that if a different operator took over the PATH they might be able to get the system reclassified in order to wiggle out of FRA regulations. But if that's possible, why wouldn't the PA be able to do it themselves?

Likewise. I've frankly never heard of that happening. And a tip: filmmakers can ask you to, say, move to the other side of the street, but if they're recording in a public space you don't actually have to listen to them.

The only time I've ever actually been blocked from getting somewhere because of a TV production was when they taped an interview with the president in my office building.

One of the other interesting things in that article was the mention of PATH being used as a freight rail line to deliver things to the WTC site. Wonder how many train delays were just due to that?

Due to a track condition, Path trains will operate 20 minute around the world service with en route delays.

PATH can now take us around the world.

"around the world service" = 33 via Hoboken, but I wouldn't put it past them to add stops in several other nations before crossing the river...

Just wonderful. It doesn't make much sense to me how maintenance work would be helped by running shorter trains -- as opposed to running trains even less frequently than they do overnight.

And then we can certainly "expect additional passenger congestion" when 2015 rolls around and they start de-salination work on the uptown tubes. That will be fun.

They might be doing some work at the end of a platform? At least they're announcing this in advance, there have been times I've had to run for short trains with no warning.

Someone earlier had alluded to the recent remediation efforts. Presumably, we will soon see large scale building at the street level all around Montgomery, Marin and Columbus. Hopefully some mix of apartments and retail, with stacked parking for all the cars currently spread around the property.

I think that's pretty much the exact plan that got held up by the soil remediation.

Those buildings have a very complex financial history and nearly went bankrupt at one point. It is now part co-op and part rental, but I think you still can't get a loan to buy in, so most of the new co-op residents are people coming from abroad and paying cash.

When I lived there I rented from the company that owned (and renovated) a large number of the units, but you can also rent from individual co-op owners.

Eminent domain is pointless: they're already planning to build a bunch of new structures around the existing buildings. That's been in the works for at least a decade, you can go see renderings on the wall in the building office. Construction started several years ago when they demolished the central corridor, but the discovery of chromium contamination and subsequent remediation slowed everything down.

I lived there for six years. Nothing we did would stop the kitchen roaches and we had a persistent leak in the walls, but it was quiet, roomy, reasonably priced, we had friendly neighbors from all over the world and the front desk folks were always super nice to me. Building management changed a few years ago, though, and I've heard the new company added lots of surprise fees and is a lot more difficult to deal with.

I think of this as a positive development, in that it keeps the folks who actually want that sort of scene away from the quieter places I like. There are plenty of other food and drink options nearby, and they're not all going to turn into the same loud bro bar overnight.
