It was only a matter of time. He tried to resign late last year, but was talked out of it. He was a guy with common sense ideas that didnt jive with the current political climate. That's the problem with some politicians: they only pay lip service. They hired this guy because he had a stellar track record in turning around other troubled mass transit systems, but then get riled up and reject his ideas because they don't fit their agendas. Compounding the issue was that, according to many insiders, Cuomo and Byford both had outsized egos which chafed against each other.

I feel Byford had the right idea in wanting to drive down issues like fare beating and turnstile jumping, but the current political climate is such that ideas like those are anathema. Crime rates in the subway system are going up, but no pol wants to see more police presence and any attempt at enforcement is painted as racist, so the criminals need not worry and things just keep getting worse. The NYC subway is definitely in decline, and the MTA fiscal situation is a mess. I wonder who they might be able to attract to run this disaster.

I recall reading that such a system would be difficult on the PATH because it was designed with some pretty tight turns (relative to other subway systems).


I vaguely remember something similar. Not sure how an articulated/open gangway subway car would be any different when it comes to turns, though. Those midsections can bend quite a bit. Having been in many such trains overseas, I am surprised they are not more popular here in the US.

The MTA just ordered 20 open gangway cars to test the concept as potential replacements of the existing subway trains. Defintely would love to see the PA test such a concept for the PATH. It would likely alleviate some of the overcrowding in cars.

Can entertainment soothe the savage beast that is the daily commute? PATH is giving musicians and other performers a chance to do that in five rail stations starting on Thursday.

Local singers, dancers, musicians, comedians and poets will perform in PATH stations across Hudson County as part of the 2019 PATH Performs! series, starting this Thursday in Harrison. The program is intended enhance the travel experience for thousands of commuters while showcasing local performers, officials said.

Apollo Sonders, a Jersey-City based band, starts the program at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, at the Harrison Station. The band has performed at the Bowery Electric in New York City, World Caf? Live in Philadelphia, and the Asbury Hotel in Asbury Park, among other popular regional venues.

PATH train alert: Bring cash as credit card processing problems continue Thursday

By The Associated Press

Passengers who ride PATH trains between New Jersey and New York City better bring cash.

The Port Authority says it is still unable to process credit and debit transactions at PATH vending machines and online Thursday. Auto replenishment SmartLink is not affected.

PATH passengers can use pay-per-ride MetroCards and refill them at MTA machines.

PATH says it is working to fix the problem.

Any idea when credit / debit will be working again so PATH and MTA cards can be refilled? This is day 3 that the system has been down.

I have a full TransitChek card and an empty PATH & MTA cards.... The lines are long to pay cash :(

Upgrading the PATH System

The general manager of the commuter line says the New York-New Jersey region depends on investments in infrastructure.

To the Editor:

Re “Even With Packed Trains, PATH Will Lose $400 Million This Year” (news article, Jan. 3):

Commuter railroads keep the region moving in a safe and reliable manner. And it’s no secret that, like all major passenger railroads in the United States, they operate at a deficit and require significant subsidies. PATH is no different, and the amount of expenses it recovers through fares is on par with other American transit systems.

But the benefit it provides goes well beyond an affordable ride in or out of New York and to Newark, Harrison, Jersey City and Hoboken, 24/7.

In 2017, PATH’s yearly ridership numbers approached 83 million, compared with 73.7 million in 2014, an 11 percent increase in just three years. That’s because major new building developments were built precisely because of their proximity to a PATH station. The residents who have since flocked to them and become riders are a true testament to the system’s value.

As these communities grow, we must continue to invest in infrastructure built more than 100 years ago — from station upgrades, to critical repairs, to modern signaling systems and safety technology. The region depends upon it.

Agreed. The idea that tolls should be exclusively used for some other purposes is hogwash, when the PA saw it fit to spend 4 BILLION dollars in a vanity project that lacks enough demand (1 WTC is STILL 25% vacant, and this is despite the city and state giving away sweet enticements to get companies to relocate there) with a companion architectural boondoggle that doubles as a mall and commuting station which has a puzzling (and incredibly unfriendly) layout that is already having issues.

The only retailers that see to be busy are the Apple Store and Eataly.

A good chunk of the 4 billion that went into construction were also earmarked federal funds. As I understand, those funds weren't allowed to be used for anything but head house construction, hence why they went so grandiose and didn't do any tandem infrastructure improvements. (though you can argue we should have gotten much better for 4bn).

Between the sale of the space and the federal money, the PA didn't spend much, if any, money on the actual construction.

Definitely wise. I bet sales per sqft is shit compared to ultra high maintenance costs of the white marble.

It may seem foolish for PANYNJ to sell it off, but given how many empty stores there still are, it may have been wise to let it go.

The original H&M railroad owned the office buildings that stood above the original lower Manhattan station. The Port Authority wanted the property.. but not the railroad.

Back in the early 1990s, the PA wanted to be a major waterfront developer. They were supposed to redevelop the Hoboken waterfront (which was rotting piers at the time), but got voted down by Hoboken residents.

No rail transportation using the existing railroad right of way was part of the plan.
