THE BAD SEED---Attic Ensemble Auditions
|
||||
---|---|---|---|---|
Not too shy to talk
|
The Attic Ensemble, Theater for a New Jersey City, will hold auditions for a non-union production of The Bad Seed a thriller by Maxwell Anderson based on the novel by William March, directed by Billy Mitchell. Auditions are Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, September 23rd and 24th 7:30-9:30 p.m at the Attic Ensemble, 83 Wayne Street, Jersey City.
ALL ROLES ARE OPEN:
Rhoda Penmark (9-12) "A neat, quaint and pretty little girl." A very large role for a young actress, Rhoda is the "bad seed" of the title, and she must have the maturity to perform dramatic scenes which are intense and emotional at times.
Christine Penmark (28-32) "She is somewhat under thirty, very pretty, gentle and gracious ... quite obviously dedicated to her husband and child." Christine is the central character in the story, and the role will be somewhat challenging physically and emotionally.
Colonel Kenneth Penmark (35) "A good-looking officer of thirty-five or so." Handsome, straight-arrow type. Possible double casting opportunity.
Monica Breedlove (40-50) "A widow of forty-five or so, plump, intelligent, voluble and perhaps over-friendly." Christine's neighbor/landlady and devoted friend, Monica carries much of the humor, but is not without her own intensity. Genuinely loud and effusive, but not a clown.
Emery Wages (35-45) "A few years younger than (his sister Monica), but also plump and friendly." Emery provides a calm contrast to Monica's determined oration. He is conversational, tolerant, and stable.
Leroy (30-45) "The houseman or janitor." Leroy is an embittered man who feels under-valued in life and takes his revenge where he can, mostly under his breath. He and Rhoda have a certain connection that provides a source of tension and insight into both of their inner thoughts.
Miss Fern (35-50) "As the head of the most aristocratic school in the state, she has achieved a certain savoir fare ..." A spinster-ish woman who runs a tight ship and expects others to cooperate and contribute.
Reginald Tasker(30-40) "... has made himself a minor expert in the history of crime." A friend of Christine and Monica's. Should have an air of mystery -- should have a wish to have an air of mystery. Possible double casting opportunity.
Mrs. Daigle (35-45) "She has been drinking." Mother of a murdered little boy. Distraught, confused and very self-conscious around Christine.
Mr. Daigle (35-45) "Please, Hortense." Husband of Mrs. Daigle, embarrassed at her assertions and her not-quite-sober condition. Possible double casting opportunity.
Richard Bravo (55-65) "Handsome once, but somewhat stern and weary." Christine's father, a once-famous homicide detective-turned-author.
Messenger - Will be double cast from within the ensemble.
Actors of all ethnicities are encouraged to attend. Familiarity with the script is strongly encouraged; sides will be provided for cold readings, monologues are accepted, but not required.
Performances are November 7-16, 2008. Rehearsals will be held in the evening with weekend rehearsals as needed.
There are no appointments necessary; auditioners will be seen on a first come/first served basis. There is no pay/no fee.

Attic Ensemble Auditions for "Sisters Rosenswieg"

The Attic Ensemble, Theater for a New Jersey City, will hold auditions for a non-union production of The Sisters Rosensweig a play by Wendy Wasserstein, directed by Sherrie Ahlin. Auditions are Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, August 5th and 6th 7:30-9:30p.m at the Attic Ensemble, 83 Wayne Street, Jersey City. We are casting the following roles:
Tess Goode: 17, serious, passionate and intelligent, Tess is in the throes of teenage idealism. Much to her mother?s dismay, she is about to join the Lithuanian resistance with her working-class boyfriend. Her education in London at Westminster has only made her long for an unpretentious American university education. Sara Goode: 54. Born Sara Rosenswieg in Flatbush, Tess?s mother is, at, an American expatriate with an acquired British accent. Highly intelligent, handsome and dignified, Sara is at the pinnacle of her career. She is the first woman to become head of the European branch Hong Kong/Shanghai Bank and has had her picture on the cover of Fortune twice. Sara has also been divorced twice to men who have left her for less intimidating younger women. She guards herself against future relationships with men. Pfeni Rosenswieg: 40, Pfeni is the youngest Rosenswieg sister. A world traveler and world-renowned journalist and author, her book, Life in an Afghan Village, is required reading for Tess?s women?s writing segment at Westminster. Seemingly self-assured, she relies on and rebels against Sara?s authority. Fun-loving and witty, she is also insecure in her relationship with a famous theater director. Geoffrey Duncan: 40, is an ?internationally renowned director and bisexual.? Although devoted to Pfeni, he still has feelings for his former partner who left him for a chorus boy in Cats. Playful and flamboyant, Geoffrey easily breaks into song or dance or both! He is charismatic, appealing, and the perfect foil to Sara?s dignified reserve. Mervyn Kant, 58, has been a widower for three years. A highly successful faux furrier from Roslyn, Long Island, Mervyn is a business associate of Geoffrey?s. Like Geoffrey, Mervyn loves musicals and is not averse to bursting into song at the drop of a hat. Mervyn tours with the American Jewish Congress and is deeply serious and political around his own Jewish roots. Gorgeous Teitelbaum is the middle Rosenswieg sister. She ?did all the right things.? She married a lawyer, had children, and moved to a Boston suburb. An overachiever, Gorgeous has become a pop-culture radio celebrity in and around her hometown. and dispenses advice with a chatty ostentation that endears her to Geoffrey and Mervyn and annoys her sisters. She wears pseudo Chanel suits, observes Jewish traditions and travels with the Beth El sisterhood. Flashy and self-absorbed, she is not as intellectually astute as her sisters. Nicholas Pym: 58, is a high-society Englishman / banker who, while accepting of Sara?s hospitality, actually dates much younger women. Tess calls him anti-Semitic; Gorgeous describes him as a Nazi. His elitism clashes with Merv?s jovial good nature. Tom Valiunus is Tess?s working-class hero. Raised in England, his large Catholic family hails from Lithuania. Hardly Tess?s intellectual equal, Tom is a bit over his head in the company of the Rosenswiegs. He is, however, genuine and endearing. Actors of all ethnicities are encouraged to attend. Familiarity with the script is strongly encouraged; sides will be provided for cold readings, no monologues are needed. The Sisters Rosensweig follows the reunion of three Jewish sisters who come together for a visit in Queen Anne's Gate, London, and the joys and struggles they share concerning romance, careers, childhood, and family--joys and struggles with which we all identify, not only as women but as human beings. Performances are September 19-28, 2008. Rehearsals will be held in the evening with weekend rehearsals as needed. There are no appointments necessary; auditioners will be seen on a first come/first served basis. There is no pay/no fee. The Attic Ensemble is located just two blocks from the Grove Street PATH Station, in the Historic Barrow Mansion, 83 Wayne Street, Jersey City.
