Ahh the HM Arcade..fun place . It closed years ago. Now replaced along with about 5 other inside the mall stores by a Staples Mega Store with no inside the mall entrances.

This was on JClist a while ago about Arcades...

I haven't been there personally, I just did a Yelp search because I was surprised by the thought that maybe arcades don't exist anymore?
Anyway, there's Reciprocal NYC, looks like just a few pinball machines:
http://www.yelp.com/biz/reciprocal-nyc-new-york

Another review mentions there being an arcade at the movie theater in Secaucus on the Plaza Dr. (Kerasotes?)

You can check out Yelp more. Its hard to tell but it looks like most are bars with video games rather than arcades for kids that happen to serve alcohol.

Thanks for all the replies and info! Much appreciated.

We've been to chuckee Cheese's already. While my son likes it, I was more looking for the older style arcade - like the one that was shown in the old "TRON" movie, with the young Jeff Bridges (my son loves that movie, and the new one Tron Legacy too), so I was hoping to bring him to one, to experience a bit of the nostaglic.

But as I suspected, not many of those left around anymore.

By the way, does anyone know if there's one in Chinatown? I was walking around Chinatown a few years ago, and I thought I saw one there. But I can't remember on which street I had seen it (or if it's still there today).

Again, thanks for all the ideas - will look into them!!!

Believe it or not the Children's Museum in Manhattan is pretty good and educational. They have lots of hands on stuff. Also, take the young one to the Rose Planetarium. That place is amazing. Good Luck!

Oh and here is a list of places that you can go for free....the Children's Museum is listed on it. :)

@CSXrailfan - Barcade is adults-only.

Dave and Busters in Times Square is a good call. Note that it caters more to adults (and tourists), so I'd avoid times of day like happy-hour. (And I believe the rule is 5 kids max per 25+ adult, just in case you're planning something like a birthday party.)

And I know the games aren't the hippest and coolest, but I love the Coney Island Boardwalk. If your 8 year old likes baseball, make an afternoon/early evening of it and check out a Brooklyn Cyclones game (that's how I got my Mookie Wilson bobblehead doll).

Dave & Busters it is in NYC so you can take the path and subway or walk if it is a nice day.

234 W 42nd St
(between 7th Ave & 8th Ave)
New York, NY 10036

BTW this place is loud :) Have fun!

Good site for finding ?fun? in New Jersey.

www.funnewjersey.com

Yes there are still arcades in NJ?.(but nothing can compare to the old Hudson Mall Arcade)

www.funnewjersey.com/upload_us ... ids/ARCADE_CENTERS_NJ.HTM

Looks like you will need a car to go have fun though.

How about atheism vs. religion. Watch how mind numbing his ole noggin becomes watching keyboard warriors blow up a simple constitutional right of a group(which many other different groups enjoy)....into a never ending screed.

Ummmm ....too young? I thought so maybe when he is older. ;)

fun time america on route 35 (or 36) south, near keyport/hazlet. i hear it's similar to what sportsworld in paramus once was.

chuck-e-cheese on 22, and i think there may still be one up in north bergen.

also the arcades in keansburg are open year round, a lot of them with ticket prizes for the games. we went to one a few months ago that had a hurricane simulator, but most of the games at that one were claw machines.

richieknucklez in flemington just closed. arcades in malls are a thing of the past unfortunately....

eesh yeah if you asked me 10, 15 years ago I could name a dozen. Sorry but I just don't think there's anything these days, even in NYC. Only thing close Chuck E Cheese. There's one in Union.

Rack and Roll in Passaic:
http://www.racknroll.biz/index.html

The games give out tickets for prizes like Chuck-E-Cheese, but the selection of games is better.

Robin.

Arcade? Wow, not around here. There was the arcade on Mallory ave many years ago called Billard Times or BT, they used to be on the corner across from McDonalds where that open lot is of Sernios if anyone remembers that. Then we had Good Times in hudson mall and also some arcade place on Palisade ave. There was also an arcade in Bayonne that was 2 or 3 levels, I forgot the name of that.
But now there's nothing I kno of except for Chuck e Cheeses :)
I prefer the one on rt 22. Right across from the strip club Hot22 and next to that motel. Perfect place to throw a childrens party so the adults can step out and have some fun also!

Can anyone recommend a good video arcade place for an 8 year old? Can either be in JC or in manhattan, and accessible via public transportation.

TIA.
