Actually - this wasn't even the steam table place. This was the Payless. Steam table place is still vacant - I think. I think they might have another restaurant somewhere which may be how they got the liquor license.

As a fan of thai, I look forward to trying the restaurant. My indicator dish is the chili & lime marinated grilled beef, often called nur yum. If you like tom yum, you can actually buys jars of it at Stevens Market on Newark. I mixed the tom yum paste with a thai BBQ sauce I bought there and marinated chicken breast in it before grilling. It was unbelievable!

I picked up a delivery menu when I walked by on Saturday. I'm really excited about the good reviews. And I'm surprised that they have a liquor license. It seemed like more of a storefront kind of place. But I haven't been inside it since it's last incarnation as a steam table kind of place.
Well, I wish it luck and I will try it as soon as possible.

I was also happy with my experience. The chicken/tomatoes curry and the yum noodles with chicken and shrimp were both very good. Papaya salad was good although it came on top of mixed greens which was sort of unnecessary.
While the atmosphere is not exactly my style, I do like the fact that they set the dining area back from the street somewhat and use shades and lighting to deemphasize the location - because let's face it, if you're spending more than $8 on dinner you don't want to be looking at Newark Avenue.

Hey there, Alex! I've had: Entrees: Spicy Lemongrass Chicken (ordered extra spicy) Chicken with String beans (actually - my friend had that) Chicken Panang Curry Apps: Thai Steamed Dumplings Vegetable Spring Rolls All were excellent. I can't say enough about how perfectly they cook their string beans. Al dente - yum! As experienced by others - the curry was very light. Sometimes panang is overwhelmingly rich and somewhat oily. Not this one. Shrimp Pad Thai will be next. I saw it served to others and was jealous.

I got take out on Friday. Fish Cakes were very good, the spicy shrimp salad was good too, but they used mixed greens. In Thai cooking the salad greens are shreded cabbage and iceburg, not arugula and spinach. Kind of weird. Fish cakes and salad with nice shrimp= $20

Hey xtine,
Can you list the other meals that you've ordered? Thanks, Alex ( yeah, that's me - I visit Metropolis all the time with my daughters to shoot the breeze w/Mark)

it's almost scary, isn't it? Went there again on Saturday night (actually ate in). Service was great. Entree came out a little quick after apps but that's better than the other way.

I ordered delivery from Sawadee on Friday night which was apparently their first night delivering. I must say that i was shocked when my order arrived no later than 15 minutes after i placed my order. As a bonus, the delivery guy was very extremely nice (almost too nice).
The food was good, the portions were large, and the prices weren't high. I will definitely order from them again soon.

I second ianmac47's review. We went for dinner last night and while they are still working out the 'just opened' hiccups, this place is definitely worth trying.
Highlights: *Food was good - tried my favorite Thai dish (my basis for comparison) and they did it well *Decent wine list and even a specialty drink and martini menu - our martinis were definitely on the strong side but I know they didn't skimp on the alcohol *Service had some minor hiccups, but you could tell that they were trying really hard to please which I appreciated. *Decor and ambiance was good - simple and tasteful, though the music did get a little loud as it got later and there were less people in the room - but they quickly fixed that *Prices matched portions - this was one of the best parts of dinner - we ordered two martinis, an appetizer, soup and two entrees and our meal was $50 before tip. (and I had half of my dinner leftover for lunch today) I seriously hope that the rest of jclist tries this place with an open mind, because we really enjoyed it and we've been dying for a new Thai place since we moved here 3 yrs ago.

Is there a menu anywhere online? Does this place do anything unusual or just the standard fare? Either way I look forward to trying it.

The "lighter flavor" green curry mentioned above is a good sign - the average mediocre thai place usually makes curries too heavy.

Had take out last night. Spring rolls and Spicy Lemongrass chicken. Both were great, even as take out. Jasmine rice was superb! Asked for extra spicy on the chicken and it WAS! That NEVER happens - I rarely feel the heat.
They do need a bartender as they don't seem to really be familiar with some of the basic cocktails but every one was really really nice. I will definitely be back!

They had some opening night kinks but it seemed to be pretty good. Three different servers tried taking our drink order, but this is better than no one taking your drink order. Also, I ordered Spicey fried shrimp and calamari with a lime sauce, but got fried shrimp and calamari with vegetables. The manager acknowledged the mistake before I took my first bite (which is more than Hard Grove ever does), but I was fine with what they brought me anyway. The Green chicken curry was quite good as well, though a much lighter flavor than I would have expected.
Over all everything ran fairly smoothly. The decor was sparse, but tasteful. The place was completely full with a wait line by the time we left. The one concern I had was that the place was a little loud, in part I think because they have tile floors and nothing to absorb the sound. But there was quite a bit of space between tables so it wasn't as though I was having a conversation with strangers. Over all, definitely will go back, probably regularly.

Preps to xtine & matchjames - I am so tired of everyone trying to wish any new business into closure before they open. Be thankful some folks are willing to put their dollar bills into new & improved in JC. God knows city hall isn't interested.
Mr Fulop why are SID meetings held on Tuesday mornings? SID appears to be a club supporting a certain developer & a bar/restaraunt in JC?????

Had the Pad Thai with shrimp (test dish). The place was hopping and it looked nice. They have a full bar and plenty of liquor being served.
The Pad Thai was $10 and it wasn't a huge portion but just enough. The shrimps were large and delicious. Will try again.

Well, so far, so good. Stopped by on the way home and ordered a Tilapia Panang, basically a fillet in a coconut/curry sauce that balanced spicy and sweet, with peppers, peas and carrots. Very tasty! Large serving ($13) of the fish (no bones to be found), big hunk of rice. Good stuff, I'll be back.

Ska: Cant say for sure, but I peeked in on the way out of Synergy last night and there is a big ol' bar down the right hand side, so I gotta figure they have booze. Good AND bad, right... gotta love BYOB.

I agree 10000%. And yes, it does affect us if people have so little optimism, piglet. It's frustrating and demoralizing as a resident and business owner (by marriage) to feel like people are just waiting for businesses to fail instead of trying to support them. When Metropolis first opened, we actually had people come in and say "I'll come back and shop here if you're still open in 3 months" Thank god there were people who weren't like that but still... Personally, I'm excited they're open. The place looks great and the prices in the ballpark. I'm going for take-out tonight.

yes, i know this is for exchanges of ideas, etc.
BUT CAN WE PLEASE ATTEMPT TO GIVE THESE PLACES A SHOT? my GOD its not even OPEN yet and it's "i give it year". Same with Gulf Coast. ALL DAMN DAY we bitch this town doesn't have enough, where's the nightlife, how come we dont have , etc etc etc and when we DO get it, it's overpriced, awful, sucks, i hate it, I give it a year, they looked at my crosseyed, etc. YES we all expect quality and service and value. BUT could we have a LITTLE bit of optimism? To their credit, it sure don't look like a PAYLESS anymore.
