The supermarket next to miss america was a Food Town. The West Coast Video used to be a "Palmer Video", and before that it was "Churches Fried Chicken" and I think maybe a "Ginos" before that.

Not being there, its hard to really know what happened...It's possible the woman was in mid lunge when they cops decided to open fire...but how could cops NOT break the door down if you tell them there is a mentally ill woman in a locked room with a knife!

Getting slashed in the forehead is pretty serious! Who knows how close it was to blinding the officer by slashing him in the eyes!

I grew up going to Al's, but the last time I was there (3 months ago) the parking lot turned into a nightmare in the hour and a half we were in the place.

There was about 20 extra cars in the lot, and they were all lined up blocking the parked cars in. people just standing around smoking up. I'm not sure if that was an isolated incident, or a regular occurance though..

There's an upscale children's store on columbus ave near hardgrove cafe that i think is going out of business. I forget the name, but It's close to Grove and Columbus and in the same building as a dry cleaners.

I've lived on wayne for 4 months now, and don't think its a bad block. but! its hard to say its good, when you have that kind of bust and activity going on. From where I used to live (mcginley sq) its still light years better.

Seems like they are cracking down on that park, though..right after I moved in I read about other recent busts at that park. So two big busts within about 5 months tells me the cops have their eye on that part of the block.

Re: Brick Haus Gym

I joined brick haus about a month ago, and I like it a lot They're open till 11pm, have lots of cool equipment and people are pretty friendly. Much better than the NYSC down in harborside which felt cramped..

one thing that is annoying about brickhaus is the tvs connected to the cardio equipment on the 2nd floor! can't they just get regular cable on those things? you have to flip through endless dead channels to find something watchable sometimes. And they don't seem to mark which equipment isn't operational..either its not marked, or they don't know its broke!

but overall its a cool gym.

I tried john's last weekend, and enjoyed the food. I'm not a fan of thin slices, so I wasn't overly impressed with the pizza, but the calzone and pasta was really good!

Try going at different times of the day, and also if possible go when the weather is really nice, since more people will be out and about. my block is a totally different experience in the winter, than the summer..

i wonder how much the fact that hudson is sitting on some prime real estate, factors into the situation to close the school?? my guess is thats why the school's closing!

These are horrible to me when the City uses crime stats to manipulate elections. See the thread back in Q1 when they were looking for votes. Then tell me this was an improvement year-on-year and not just a cynical tactic to win votes.

well i do agree with you that if someone is going to tout an issue as a pillar of their campaign, that they had better consistantly perform in that area, and make it their priority outside of the campaign.

But, from an overall point of view, I still don't think its so bad from one year to the next that crime stats stayed the same for a particular month.

Re: Is it safe for two single women to live in this neighborhood? Please help!

i live on fairmount ave, grew up in jc, and went to high school not far from where I live now, so Im sure I have a different perspective on things, since the neighborhood is familiar to me, but I do belive that overall its not a bad place to live.

but...there are still alot of sketchy people around. if you decide to take the apartment, I would limit your outside time as much as possible. don\'t go to the corner store, or go exploring. I find myself trying to hide the fact that I wear a shirt and tie to work, or that I have nice things. this could be totally unnecessary, and all in my own mind, but its just what I do.

the walk to the path station (jsq?) is honestly not bad at all. I see alot of other professionals doing it as well.

I\'m hoping more professionals do move into the area, but you\'ve got to feel safe where you live, so just follow your instincts. if the neighborhood feels unsafe, than it might not be for you.

I like realtor.com. they often give you a map of where the property is. http://rentals.realtor.com/rentals/

good luck!
