Years ago I asked a friend I ran in to in JC (who's parents own a japanese/sushi restaurant in essex county) where I should order sushi... he told me the only place worth going was Honshu. I have to agree.

Thank you!

Wild Fusion has surprisingly good sushi. I tried the Chinese food first since it's run by Chinese but that was disappointing.

Haven't found a cheap one. I think Honshu is pretty authentic for JC. Illuzion is Americanized roll deliciousness - delivers and is delicious (a lot of fish and little rice).

Going to try that shady place in 440 out! How hard is it to get to without a car from JSQ? Bikable?

The fish will always get overshadowed if you order rolls. To determine if the place has the freshest sushi, always order Chirashi (assorted sashimi over sushi rice). The chef is supposed to give you their freshest selection available that day.

In IMHO, Honshu has always had the freshest sushi, and I don't visit anywhere else anymore the last 4 years. My family have been dining almost every Friday at Komegashi (Montgomery) since it opened about 20 years ago. It's still one of the best, but Honshu edges it in the quality of their Tuna, Yellowtail and Salmon. The 3 must be perfect in any decent sushi restaurant.

and, it's BYO.

I want to give a shout-out to Grace at Sushi Tango. My wife Lisa and I dropped in Friday night and had a nice meal and a good time. The Green Jade roll (sweet potato, asparagus, jalapeno) was a good new find.

Also another vote for Honshu. I'm not sure if this was mentioned either but, I've enjoyed the sushi I've gotten from Teppan as well.
JC Sakura if you're desperate for cheap and okay. Wasn't a fan of Sushi Tango. The sushi at Wild Fusion is also hit or miss.

Komegashi is great, the original one, not Komegashi II in Newport.

Illuzion in Hoboken is my go-to place for sashimi delivery. Fresh, great portion sizes and usually throw in special cuts.

Hey user1111?if you are not familiar with the strip of stores that Ashiya is in on 440 be careful if you are driving. I don?t know how JC permitted that strip of stores to be built. Cars are always backing out of the spaces right onto 440. Along with having cars double and triple parked with people running into the check cashing place it?s a mad house. Food is good though.(it may just be worth getting killed for)

HAHA! Thanks for the heads up, I am familiar with RT. 440 shenanigans and foolishness.

Teppan makes a great lobster and mango sushi roll. Robongi in Hoboken is fabulous.

Honshu is by far best...I've eaten at all the others, and the only thing that comes near Honshu is Komegashi, and it doesn't even get that close.

If you're looking for cheap sushi that's surprisingly good, try Ashiya on 440. No frills, super cheap, and tasty. Not a place to go if you're looking to have a nice evening out, but good if you're just craving some sushi.

and IMO, Sushi Tango is not good at all. In my experience, the places I've mentioned, are all far superior to the sushi I've gotten from ST.

Thanks for the tip, tonight is a sushi night :)

Komegashi if you absolutely have to have the fabulous Green Tea Ice cream for dessert. Try the Temaki sushi boat - your choice of six pieces of sashimi, seaweed to roll it, avocado, cucumber and sushi rice. the fact you roll it yourself makes the seaweed fresh and crunchy. They always have seasonal specialties such as Toro(2-3 grades), Amaebi, baby mackerel, Wild Salmon and live Scallops(yum)

Honshu if you like BYO. Sushi is as good as Komegashi (although not much in the way of seasonal specialties). One can save quite a few bucks when you bring your own bottle of Sake.

Komegashi is great, but expensive. I've been to More, but i'm not a fan of hybrid sushi/thai resturants. JC Sakura is near my home, but the service is horrendous and the food mediocre. I have rarely been treated as poorly as I had at JC Sakura.

For sushi, I would suggest you travel up to Edgewater to Mitsuwa supermarket. It's a huge authentic Japanese market (one of four in the country), and has regular bus service to it from Port Authority. It's a 2o minute drive, or a 40 min lightrail/bus ride (transfer at Lincoln Harbor to the 156-158 bus). It's well worth the trip.

Komegashi on Montgomery. Ask for the off-menu Mountain roll. It's delicious.

I tried Sushi Tango once and didn't like it. Same with JC Sakura. Honshu is by far the best, in my opinion. Komegashi is also decent. The one on Montgomery is better and cheaper than the Newport one, but both are decent. A new Japanese place is opening in 50 Columbus, but it looks to be more American-style. It would be nice to get a Japanese owned Japanese restaurant in Jersey City.

another vote for honshu here, for reasons already named. i hasten to add that they also deliver to journal square even tho their take-out menu says they only deliver to downtown areas. oh and you can pay via credit card when getting delivery too.

I don't know...granted, I've only had Sushi Tango once, but it was mediocre enough that I haven't gone since and I have sushi very often.

Sushi Tango? seriously? I guess I'll have to try it. I always went to Komogashi; a couple of times to Honshu. Grand Banks seriously blows, though. I cannot believe they still exist.

I will have to give Sushi Tango a try.

Definitely Sushi Tango.

They have the freshest Yellowtail, even on days when the fish markets are closed. Apparently they have "a source."

I love it.

Komegashi is my favorite. The Grand Banks - right down the block (Montgomery and Washington) has pretty good sushi as well.

Yeah, I think Sush Tango is generally underrated - the dining area inside isn't anything special (some of the artwork is cool), but the food is always great.
