As a law student I'm trying to do this the legal way. I posted on here because I know there is a legal way to get a variance, its just somewhat difficult and I was wondering if anyone went through the process. I agree I'm mad about illegal driveways too, but at the same time now theyre punishing people like my parents who do everything by the book. As for aesthetics lets be realistic its the city, jersey city isnt stopping people from building those huge 2 family houses that have illegal apartments and fit like 50 ppl in them with 10 cars, well all those illegal residents are taking the parking spots, and it seems only fair the people who live on the block who pay their taxes should be able to park their car. I'm in the heights there are no historic houses on my block or in my area in general. Honestly if people really want aesthetics move to the suburbs plain and simple, but dont screw over the little guy who follows the law while everyone around him breaks it. Anyway like I said I have no intention of doing it illegally I just want some advice on how to proceed to get the variance, I know its possible.

It's funny you mention the suburbs, but you have it backwards. If you want to park your car in a driveway and drive everywhere you go, then it is you that needs to move to the suburbs. That is what the suburbs are made for. The city is made for walking and public transit. Cars are a luxury, not a necessity here.

Erie is where this really needs to be enforced, even if they have to put a stop sign on every corner. Marin is a thoroughfare, like it or not. Pedestrians should wait for the light to change before crossing.

Must be big. They were investigating a backpack under the benches yesterday morning and only taped off the bench area.

Re: Grocery stores in downtown JC (close to Grove PATH)?

From Grove Pointe, the best grocery store is Whole Foods at the WTC. I pretty much only shop there, or Tendershoot Farm for fruits and veggies and La Nueva Isla for meat when I don't feel like going to the city.

Shoprite is the best store around to get everything in one place, but that's not saying much. But Shoprite is torture and suffers from the same up and down quality in Jersey City produce that everywhere else here does, but it is the only place really in walking distance of Grove Pointe that offers a full selection of frozen vegetables, etc as well. Fresh fruit and vegetables are hit or miss everywhere in Jersey City which is odd and sucks. Sometimes you could hit every place in town and not find a good onion, for example.

La Conga has Mexican Cokes, but their overall grocery selection is lacking. Butcher shop there is decent and cheap though.

I guess Christie is doing his part as a good Republican to bleed out more NJ federal tax money to red states. It sucks, considering we already get, by far, the worst return for our dollar on federal tax payments, less than 60 cents on the dollar. Meanwhile, Mississippi, for instance, gets 2 dollars back for every dollar it puts in. Have you driven on a US highway in Mississippi? US 84 is perfectly manicured 4 lane highway going through nothing but open countryside. Compare that to US 1-9 through North Jersey which is in worse shape than most roads in Baghdad.

These projects themselves aren't the problem. Corruption is the problem. I imagine this project is also riddled with backroom deals and envelopes of cash.

I imagine Christie, himself, already has an envelope filled with Xanadu cash from all the swindlers involved in that boondoggle. It doesn't particularly matter anyway, because he's going to quit and try to seek national office rather than run again next time. That writing is on the wall.

So you don't stand by the stupid Vonnegut quote?

In any case, to all you PATH defenders -

How can there be ANY circumstance, 40 years after man landed on the MOOOOOOOOOOOOON, that a TRAIN in an UNDERGROUND TUBE - an almost PERFECTLY CONTROLLED environment, should SLAM ON THE TRAIN BRAKES.

Day after day, some inept driver slams on some train brakes. Why? What possible defense could you have? You can't tell me that there is imminent danger - say, an alligator on the tracks. IS there not some system of gradation that could make the trains less dangerous? That could make the stops less abrupt? I think of the elderly, cruelly denied a seat by the inconsideration of young hoodlums and yuppies, being thrown about like bags of bones. I think of the pregnant mother, similarly seatless via the myopia of our age, falling to her belly and miscarrying. I think of the moron who brings his bicycle onto the train during rush-hour, now smashing the bike into the bare legs of short-skirted ladies, snagging flesh and stocking in chain and gear. Why is this carnage not addressed? Why are the supposedly humanistic and liberal denizens of JCLIST so quick to turn a blind eye to the sufferings and injustices perpetrated against the PATH riders by a cruel and uncaring OVERLORD - the PANY/NJ?

Will no one stand up for the rights of the oppressed?

At this point in time, there's no real need for a driver, and certainly no need for a door operator. The second in particular is already unneeded with the new trains.

Not that either of our anecdotes are worth anything, but I ride the PATH and the L daily on roughly equivalent trips, and the L is ALWAYS on time, a much smoother ride, and a much cleaner and more pleasant experience overall.

As for the PATH being bumpy due to age, you do realize that the LEVEL has existed for thousands of years, and that buildings have been constructed to not topple over since at least the pyramids. Furthermore, the NYC Subway, which as far as I know predates the PATH, is pretty jostle-free comparatively. I don't know why the PATH has such a bumpy ride, but to blame it on it being a a hundred years old is proof of historical ignorance.

Plenty of subway lines are bumpy. Not so much in Manhattan since they primarily run in straight lines under wide avenues. The old red 7s felt like they were gonna come off the tracks. The PATH turns are also much tighter than most subway lines. The main problem is on either side of the Hudson River on the 33rd Street line. It's like they built out the subway on both sides, then dropped the tunnel under the river without regard to where it came out on each side. When it didn't line up, they just jury rigged the connections.

Large housing projects and walled low income communities do have a lot of issues. A better solution is to require developers to set aside a certain percentage of units for low income in every building.

10th & Erie ? Many people have suggested that this blinking light be changed to a fully functional light due a high number of accidents at this intersection. However, working with the Traffic division, our office has determined that a fully functional light would require a complete overhaul of the existing intersection and is not necessary. The East Police District has stepped up enforcement in this area.

This is the drivers' fault, not the light. People in JC have no clue how to obey the rules of that intersection. A flashing yellow light means proceed with caution, not stop. A flashing red light means stop and then proceed if crossing traffic has cleared.

They also really struggle with stop signs that aren't all way. Everyone needs to go back to driving school.

Even if there was a fully functional light at every intersection, people are still going to hit pedestrians and still block the box. JC people just don't know how to drive.

Enforcement is a problem as well. The PD could cover its entire budget by writing tickets for blocking the box on 12th street. Then eventually traffic could actually cross at Erie, Grove, and Marin.

Why not Bayonne to Staten Island to Perth Amboy? No need to go to Newark for a North-South route.

I tried Sushi Tango once and didn't like it. Same with JC Sakura. Honshu is by far the best, in my opinion. Komegashi is also decent. The one on Montgomery is better and cheaper than the Newport one, but both are decent. A new Japanese place is opening in 50 Columbus, but it looks to be more American-style. It would be nice to get a Japanese owned Japanese restaurant in Jersey City.

Stairs would be fine, but they usually block it off with makeshift fencing. Still everything would go more smoothly if people stayed to the right on stairs and walkways. All of NYC has this problem. Tokyo does this right even with twice as many riders.

I get on the 33rd st line everyday between 8:45 and 9:15 and it is never so crowded that I can't get on and sometiems get a seat, unless there was a breakdown/delay. The WTC line on the other hand looks like a can of sardines.

The WTC train is more crowded for 8 am and 9 am shift starts. 33rd is more crowded for 10 am shift starts. The WTC train is practically empty at 9:30 while the 33rd is at capacity. It should be 2 WTC for every one 33 during the early shift and two 33, 1 WTC, late shift. The bigger travesty is Hoboken service taking up half of the system time. Going home from 33rd at 5 or 6 pm, the JSQ platform looks like the city is being evacuated for a hurricane while nearly everyone gets a seat on the Hoboken train. Its pretty easy for PATH to figure out how to stagger service so that crowded lines have more trains at times when they are at capacity, but for whatever reason they don't. NJTransit passengers don't transfer to the PATH at Hoboken Terminal anymore after Secaucus Junction was built. Hoboken PATH service needs to be reduced accordingly. Easy fix. Make a 33rd express from JSQ that stops at JSQ, Grove, Newport, 14th, and 33rd. And a local that stops at everything including Hoboken. All trains are filled. PATH saves money. Its a win-win for everyone.

Just wait, because Harrison's Transit City isn't even built yet. It is only going to get worse.

I commuted to New Hyde Park from downtown JC for a summer. I don't recommend it. Driving was the best way to get there for me, since I also had to take an LI bus from Great Neck Station if I took mass transit. Driving there in the morning is not all that bad, but if you get off work at 5, it will take you 2 or more hours to get home. If your work is walking distance from the station I would take the PATH to the LIRR. Still it is a pretty rough commute to do long term.

what happened last night? I live in the area and didn't see/hear anything.

A guy named Eric and a girl named Mary decided to have it out drunk in the middle of 3rd St. Actually, Eric decided to have it out, screaming for a good 15 minutes, telling her to call her "goons" so he could fight them. Then he threw her phone against a car. Threatened to hit her. Cops came and they were quiet. Cops leave, they're out there screaming again. This time its along the lines of "You're gonna leave the man that loves you, Mary?" Cops drive by again and they're gone.

Its fun if you want to fight some dude because he thinks his girlfriend was looking at you, or if you want to fight some guy because he wants your girlfriend and he thinks its a good idea to follow you home. Be prepared to fight all his friends also when it happens.

Its at 3rd and Monmouth.

Abbey's needs to gain control of their customers. There are now domestic disturbances nearly every night taking place in the middle of the street, always loud and sometimes violent. It is getting completely out of hand. Once again the cops have to come here. 3 nights this week now and twice today.

This is on top of the drunk driving that has always gone on there.
