I caused trouble. :(

I brought my daughter there for the chicken about two years ago, when the pool room part was almost empty, and let her play with another child. At some point, she crawled under a table, and a glass fell off and broke. So, of course, I'm too embarrassed to ever go back there.

But, anyhow, that's the worse incident that I've ever seen when I've gone to Abbey's early in the evening for fried chicken.

Abbeys is a great place...have been back and forth there for a coupla years now and the (asian) lady who bar tends has gotta be the coolest bar tender in JC i have met.

Dunno about the trouble..never seen it, though i guess that's about the time i go there (usually early evening 'cos it's a great place to sit outside of)
Went there recently and there was a film being made in the building ...anyone got details?.

I'm afraid if I show up in my tailor made italian suit and my favourite axe, you might ditch your boyfriend for this gangster.

I am one of the bartenders at Abbey's, have been for over a year. I have to say all the postings about fights at Abbey's neglect to address that most of the confrontations that go on there are overflow the the barge Inn that is directly across the street. Granted there has been an incident or two recently, none of the trouble starters are aloud back in the bar. I love Abbey's not only because I work there, but because or the chill, relaxed environment, and the steady group of great regulars who am I lucky to call my friends. I met my boyfriend and my best friend who is now my roommate at Abbey's before I started working there. At the time I had just moved up to Jersey City from South Jersey and was just looking for a chill place to watch football and drink beer. I found exactly that. I invite anyone who has been there and had a bad first experience or would like to check out a new bar. I work Wednesday and Saturday nights and would love to see some new faces. Mention this posting and I'll give you you a beer on me :) See you there!

I got takeout from Abbey's a few weeks ago. I loved it! The BBQ chicken and ribs were delicious. I didn't think the prices were so great until I saw the huge portions. I definitely will be ordering again.

Even though I do not like the place, my friends wanted to go so I gave it another chance. Same thing happened agained. A fight broke out. I wish I was not there to see it, but I was. The guy with the girl was an a**hole. The guy with the girl hit some guy because he gave the girl a compliment. How stupid is that! The guy with the girl was clearly wrong.

I remember talking briefly to the guy that got hit first. He is harmless and such a nice guy too. I am glad he punched that other guy back. The fight should never have happened though.

Maybe it's the hookah smoke?

Their menu never interested me, but now I'm curious to go just to gawk at some of the brawling locals.

But it would be my luck to be there on the night someone brings a gun.

Another big fist fight right inside the bar last night -- not good -- clearly something is going wrong in there.

I think you are right. I have seen things happen outside too and all around here, but specifically with Abbey's, they have their share of problems that make it a bad place to go if you want to have a fun time with no drama.

at the very least, you could go to the couple places by JSQ like off vroom and bergen or the upstairs joint on JFK. i know they sell that stuff there.

Willy_Lopez is not dumb afterall. He is correct. It is an "OBVIOUS CHARACTER ASSESSMENT." I thank him for giving me the idea to write a book on this topic. Willie_Lopez will be my first and only case study in...HOW TO BE AN A**HOLE! And, I will give him full credit. Next, I would consider making it a board game called...PIN THE TAIL ON THE A**HOLE. The possibilities are endless.

I will waste no more time on W_L.

Finished.

It sounds like he has been scarred by a traumatic childhood experience. There is a good possibility that he is a product of growing up with domestic violence.

relax tough ass.. you're the type to get your boyfriend stomped out over your big mouth.. now i know to slap the loudmouth woman first before swinging at the good samaritan (jock) boyfriend.

I went there ONCE and yes I experienced a shouting match between a woman and some humongous dude over a seat. They were obviously drunk. And yes, I witnessed the tiny female bartender try to calm them down and keep everyone happy. I felt worried for her and I kept a look to make sure she was ok but I agree that perhaps a bouncer is in order, but maybe I think all bars need that. I'm not sure. Alcohol can make some people wacky.

Abbey's needs to gain control of their customers. There are now domestic disturbances nearly every night taking place in the middle of the street, always loud and sometimes violent. It is getting completely out of hand. Once again the cops have to come here. 3 nights this week now and twice today.

This is on top of the drunk driving that has always gone on there.

From what I have witnessed, it appears that a male patron might get involved in breaking up a fight. It is good in a way because at least someone is willing to end any type of violence, but bad overall. Who the hell wants to go out at night to have a good time with friends and end up breaking up a fight because the owner and or management is too stupid and cheap to get a bouncer. What if the patron breaking up a fight gets hurt? I also feel sorry for the bartenders there. They are all female trying to maintain control of some *ucked up and violent person while trying to satisfy everyone else that is out to have a good time. I do not like going there with my boyfriend and friends. They are the type of men that will get involved in breaking up a fight. I don't want my boyfriend and friends possibly getting hurt. I don't feel safe there. I witnessed one act of violence from someone there and the next week I saw that same person there again. No one did anything. I avoid going there. It can be a nice place to go but at any moment it can change.

I just want to beat everyone to the punch and say:

It's your fault for living near a bar! Next time, do your research.

(I don't actually think that, just trying to diffuse the issue before the people who actually think that come)

Its possible, but the Barge Inn never seems to have more than 3 patrons at any given time.

Quote:
what happened last night? I live in the area and didn't see/hear anything.

A guy named Eric and a girl named Mary decided to have it out drunk in the middle of 3rd St. Actually, Eric decided to have it out, screaming for a good 15 minutes, telling her to call her "goons" so he could fight them. Then he threw her phone against a car. Threatened to hit her. Cops came and they were quiet. Cops leave, they're out there screaming again. This time its along the lines of "You're gonna leave the man that loves you, Mary?" Cops drive by again and they're gone.

Yeah, great place to have drinks outside...A few weeks ago, my wife and I were walking by and some drunk ass was verbally harrassing us from one of the outside tables...That doesn't happen at any other bar with outdoor seating in Jersey City...Classy patrons at this place.
