Re: Movies filmed in Jersey City

Just can't stay away

Our indie action movie, shot in Jersey City by Jersey City residents is out today. We will be posting on our website pearlfilm.com all of the places to get it but the easiest and most popular are below...
We made this movie while working full-time jobs with the help of some very talented friends. You'll recognize many locations (Bouquets & Baskets, Canco Lofts, penthouse of Hamilton Square, creepy abandoned places where Jersey Ave dead ends into LSP, LSP....).
We didn't crowdfund because instead we wanted people to just rent/buy and enjoy the finished product. We hope you will check it out and enjoy it. Thanks, The PattonsResized Image

Save $15 on tickets by buying them online ahead of time. You can come have drinks in between JC Friday stops. The programs GCS does have been helping the community for decades.

If you'll notice i mentioned that the reason i can't really comment on the rest of the area is because there is a police district designation between the area of Lafayette i live in and the rest of it. I go to and look at crime and stats on the East District part of Bergen-Lafayette. The rest is West District and it's a separate meeting, stats, reporting phone number etc.
I'm not trying to annex our neighborhood nor did I create the police district lines. But i would point out that when you talk about downtown i bet no one is thinking about the area between hoboken and 10th street which i am sure has a much different crime rate then between 10th and the grove path.
It seems like sometimes there is a double-standard for downtown and the rest of JC for some on this site.

If you come to the east district captain's meetings and look at the crime stats, lafayette (talking from about woodward to the light rail, from the railroad crossing at pacific to where downtown starts) actually has less crime than downtown.
We are much less densely populated however.
I can't speak to what happens past woodward because that is a different police district and we don't get those stats. But i think when people refer to lafayette they are generally talking about before you go up the hill to garfield.
There are a few spots that always get complaints... Van Horne south of communipaw, dr. lena edwards park, the places that are getting torn down near where berry lane park is going... And recent police activity, community involvement and housing activity is starting to make a dent there. The Morris Canal CDC has had people stopping by their office the last few months asking what they can invest in, and projects that have been on hold for years are finally starting to go up. I think the next two years could see a real turning point.

This practice as a whole is great. Checked out all the docs at Hoboken Washington Street and they are all solid. I think they do their due diligence when bringing on docs. Our son has had great care at Hoboken and Secaucus when we had to take him in an urgent situation. So glad this location is seeing adults too. We got booted from our internal med doc at JCMC because of aetna no longer working with JCMC so glad to have another good option.

if you are opening a restaurant generally the rule is you need to plan to lose money for the first year. also, it's a shame that people might think that the neighborhood cannot support a restaurant/bar because we did when it was a good one (MAE) and that closing had nothing to do with it not being successful or supported.

After having a kid & using a stroller all over we've noticed how impossible it must be for people to get around with a wheelchair on public transit.
Not sure if this is an option for you but the exchange place path elevators work (you have to take 2 to get from street to path train) and the 33rd street path elevators work (just one elevator there), so you could get from JC to midtown on the path.

Our movie, Pearl, won the local film category so thanks to those that came to see it. If you missed it it will be playing Dec 3 in lower Manhattan at 32 Second Ave (at Second Street).
We'll also be adding more fests to the website pearlfilm.com as we find out dates and times.

You or your friend could come to the East District police meeting Tuesday (tomorrow) at the school on bright street at 7pm and look at the crime maps and see the facts of the crimes reported in the past month in Lafayette where your friends are looking vs downtown since we're all in the East District. That way you get a clear pic instead of just opinions (some are clearly more helpful and less sarcastic than others :)

Aetna is in a dispute with Jersey City Medical Center and doesn't cover doctors tied to Hoboken hospital either. It's very frustrating. We found a great doc in JC and now she's not covered. If you find someone please post it here.

+1 for what getz011 said. The only emails and updates I've received are from the east district police and Doug Carlucci. And I cannot support anyone aligning with Healy.
I know it's hard to tell how successful anyone will be once they get in office, but after meeting and listening to the candidates I do feel Diane Coleman is the best choice. We've all put hope in people here and been disappointed but I'm going to vote based on what she's already done to help people in our community and the fact that she's not in someone else's pocket already.
Also Ms. Coleman has been doing door to door, neighborhood meetings, mailers. Maybe if you haven't heard of her it's because you don't live in our ward or attend any meetings here.

It seems hit or miss in downtown as to who has power and who doesn't. I'm charging my phone at a friend's on Erie. You can also go to Target. I've been riding my bike all over. Nowhere between Lafayette and the post office downtown seems to have power. Grand street is lined with people's flooded belongings and debris. Buildings by the path at Newport are cleaning up but don't have power. Shoprite is open but was running on generators. HPNA is still doing the farmers market with some Halloween stuff for the kids later this afternoon. Be careful out there with no traffic lights. People don't always stop like they should.

Below is the info for the west district. If you call, ask to speak to their community relations officer. Or you could email the email addresses and ask. Once you get on the mailing list, they should send you reminders...providing they have them every month like the East District does.

West District

Phone: (201)547-5450
Fax: (201)547-5077

The West District, commanded by Captain Mark Hussey, is populated by approximately 50,000+ residents.

We had a similar problem when we moved into our home. There's a church directly behind our home where a man with non-descript mental issues lives. He would sit all day in a lawn chair that he positioned facing the back of our house and stare and smoke cigars. It was just a small alley back there and there was no reason he couldn't be sitting in a more pleasant area of the church grounds than in a small alley facing our home. Our first purchase was a nice big vinyl fence from lowes to block his view. And we put curtains in all our windows. Still sometimes when we are trying to enjoy the backyard we can smell cigar smoke back there and hear him hacking up a lung. I understand the renter's frustration and it's worse because you are not the property owner. I would definitely do as others suggested and find out who owns that guy's property and contact them regarding roof use. It also can't hurt to look up the sex offender registry, put in your address, and look at the pictures of the offenders that live in your neighborhood to make sure he is not one of them.

None of the people who were shot there live in this Lafayette neighborhood. It is frustrating that 15-year-olds are partying outside that park at midnight. It would be great if they actually did enforce the curfew before things like this happen.

You can attend your district's police meetings where they hand out crime maps detailing crimes for the past month. You can also look at stats at http://www.njjcpd.org/ click on COMPSTAT Of course there will always be crime that people don't report, and there is no way to track that.

I've lived in the lafayette neighborhood for almost four years now. We own a two-family. There are some great blocks and some not so great blocks just like any neighborhood. Things have definitely improved and now we have Maritime Parc and the beer garden that we can walk to, where before there was almost nothing restaurant-wise. Also Cesar's keeps saying they will reopen eventually. If you really want to investigate you should attend both the east district captain's meeting (there is one tuesday the 28th at the school on Bright Street at 7pm) and a morris canal redevelopment area coalition meeting (usually the first thursday of each month). You meet homeowners from the area and at the police captain's meeting you see that for the most part crime is actually lower in our neighborhood than in other parts of downtown.

You can come to the East District police meetings- fourth tuesday of every month (the next one is the 25th of Jan they are at the school on Bright Street near pathmark, 7pm) and see for yourself what crime is happening where- they hand out maps with crimes from the previous month mapped out. Also, if you live in Lafayette there is a great new restaurant that opened in Liberty State Park, Maritime Parc. We always complain about there not being anything within walking distance, and Maritime is and it's great. You can also walk to the Zeppelin beer hall over the little bridge to Jersey ave if you want something cheaper.

Someone asked about hard groves veggie selection. They make a great fake chicken quesadilla, and the vegetarian gloria estefan is an awesome sandwich with fake chicken and plantains. just have to know when you go to hard grove that you will be there for awhile. but there are plenty of vegetarian options that taste good.

thanks political for getting involved. you're right it's important to report everything and look out for your neighbors. at night the east district has only six or seven cars, with two guys in each, and a maybe a few undercovers, on directed patrols. The east district runs from the hoboken border all the way down to a little past communipaw. That's so few police for this area. And obviously in this economy and budget problems we're not going to be getting more police anytime soon.

Dr. Migliaccio on 6th & Washington in Hoboken is GREAT. He is thorough, respectful, young enough to be up on current stuff but old enough to have enough experience. Other docs refer people to him who have high risk pregnancies i believe. Check out reviews on kannekt too. The one negative i hear is the staff is not so great, but i was in a couple weeks ago and things seem to have improved on that front. He was also board certified at several good local hospitals so that is a plus.

this particular neighborhood in lafayette- from the light rail to pacific, and from where downtown ends to communipaw, hasn't had a shooting since the one at Dr. Lena Edwards park at the end of summer (as far as i can see from police reports and news stories). and if you go to the east district captain's meetings, we have less violent crimes, car thefts etc than downtown. not sure who "they" are either- as in the previous "at least they're keeping it in their neck of the woods"-
we have a very diverse neighborhood, old-timers, new young families, white, black, asian, hispanic, etc...

it would be great if almost every government official in JC would get arrested and we could start over with less corrupt government. i was hoping the last few elections that voters would do it the old fashioned way, but that hasn't happened.
there was almost no one at my polling place during the recent elections.
