Pane was arrested 10 days later after a surveillance video released by police and published on The Jersey Journal's breaking news blog on its website (www.NJ.com/Hudson) led to numerous tips.

At a news conference after the sentencing, Juan Cartagena, a family member of Torres, expressed gratitude to the courts, police and the media. He also said he credits The Jersey Journal's coverage as "critical" in Pane's apprehension.

What irks me the most is that after any case like this the cops will simply put up one of those giant flashing signs that read "25 MPH Speed Limit" at the site of an accident. They did that again after that fatal hit and run on RT. 139. I want to see some real enforcement. Residents are stilling having to dodge speeders and Stop-Sign jumpers at every intersection in this city. Enforce the law, save some lives and close the budget gap by writing some tickets.

Bayonne man who went through red light in Jersey City, hit pedestrian and left him for dead is sentenced to 364 days in Hudson County jail after victim agrees to downgrading charges in plea deal

Saturday, August 14, 2010
By JULIUS ZEITLINGER
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

The Bayonne man who raced the truck he was driving through a red light in Jersey City's Newport neighborhood, struck a man and then left him for dead was sentenced to 364 days in Hudson County jail yesterday morning by Hudson County Superior Court Judge Paul DePascale.

Anthony Pane, 20, also faces two years of probation and must perform 100 hours of community service under terms of a plea deal. He pleaded guilty on June 8 to leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury, aggravated assault by auto, and endangering an injured victim.

"I was a coward that day," Pane tearfully told the court yesterday, referring to June 13, 2009, when he struck Ricardo Torres, 53, of Jersey City, on Marin Boulevard and fled the scene.

Pane was arrested 10 days later after a surveillance video released by police and published on The Jersey Journal's breaking news blog on its website (www.NJ.com/Hudson) led to numerous tips. Torres survived the accident with serious injuries and spent several months in the hospital.

"He is a coward and so are any of his friends and family who knew" about the accident during those 10 days before he was caught, Torres told the court in his statement before Pane was sentenced.

"What bothers me the most about this incident is the fact that he left the scene and left me to die, and that he didn't come forward and take responsibility for his actions, with the hope he could get away with it," Torres said.

The most serious charge, aggravated assault, which carries a five-year sentence, was dropped as part of the plea deal. Pane originally was charged with assault by auto, aggravated assault, leaving the scene of an accident and endangering an injured victim.

In his statement, Torres said: "The only reason my wife and I agreed to take the serious charge of aggravated assault off the table is because we are compassionate people."

At a news conference after the sentencing, Juan Cartagena, a family member of Torres, expressed gratitude to the courts, police and the media. He also said he credits The Jersey Journal's coverage as "critical" in Pane's apprehension.

I hadn't heard/read anything further on this case so I googled it. Glad the victim survived and I hope he gets his money.

If this is just an accident, even if it's caused by the driver disobeying the law and running a light, i still have a little forgiveness in me for the driver if he tries to help the victim, considering he's only a kid and there is no intend.

But this kid, after running over the man, just LEAVES. That changes everything, people like that should not be shown any mercy. And i dont buy the crap at all that he didnt know, please... if you hit a man like that as shown on the video, YOU KNOW.

Good to hear the news with Mr. Torres.

Went through the intersection at lunch and there was a JCPD cruiser with a cop sitting in the vehicle monitoring traffic. Shame that it takes something like this to wake these boys up.

Speed trap that whole entire stretch and make the reckless drivers pay for their actions.

Wow - I looked at the picture of the kid and all I could think was "you poor, stupid, stupid kid. One moment of bad judgment and your life may have been ruined." I don't say that to excuse or diminish the damage he caused and certainly the health of Mr. Torres is of greatest importance here. But 19 year-old males often do stupid things. I know I did. You just hope that your stupidity stays within the range of generally harmless. And if you have a son, you think that all the time.

The kid, if found guilty, definitely needs to suffer the consequences of his actions. I just don't think that's a cause for satisfaction or celebration.

I found the same thing...it would be smart of him to do that. I also wonder if the police use FB and other social networking sites to gain evidence?

Whatever - he deserves what he gets out of this.

Considering he went to prep school, attends an expensive private college, and drives a new F-150 - I am sure mommy and daddy will have an army of lawyers by his side.

I know we all make mistakes when we are young... but nearly killing someone and driving off is unacceptable.

no. that's a terrible idea. he'll get his share of gawking and public ridicule. there's no need to pile on abusively through this medium. in fact it's probably worse for the abuser

Glad they got him...JCPD does their job! Bravo! It's just a sad sad story....I hope the City takes action to prevent these terrible accidents in the future, starting with having the PD give out speeding tickets on Marin!
