SUMMIT AUTO
(201) 659-5872 | 475 Pavonia Ave Jersey City, NJ 07306 (corner of Chestnut and Pavonia) These guys are great and it is the cleanest old garage that I have ever seen. The prices are very reasonable also.

Hi...not sure if this is yours, but I've seen an early 80's green (either 300 or 240) around Grove...awesome car!
About 15 years ago I had an '80 240D...so I really appreciate that body style. I haven't had to take my current vehicle ('05 ML500) for service yet, but will need too soon. That being said, you should consider some of the shops mentioned in this thread http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum ... baf352100c75186b&t=160708 Quote:

I have an 83 Mercedes that needs a little work (small engine leak and one window doesn't work). I live in the Hamilton Park area. Does anyone have a good (honest) mechanic in the area?
Thanks in advance.

Hello, was wondering if anyone could recommend a place to get my breaks worked on. I have a 1999 Acura TL and I think it needs both the front and back break serviced.
Thanks for the advice

I went to Avel frequently for service(when they did service) and bodywork (lots of parking lot dings, and scrapes, nothing complicated) did not realize that they were really high priced and poor service unitil I had a fender bender, where the other person had Geico. Geico said if I went to Ziggy's on 7th Street, that everything would be taken care of. I made an appointment for the estimate, they were ready on time, they set the time for the repair, I went in, the rental car was ready and waiting. My car was ready 2 days earlier than promised, and the repairs werre perfect, the service was perfect, the price was fair, and they did everything I asked, without issue. I have not gone back to Avel since.

Avel is really overpriced. In the past I went to Sip Auto Body (you can walk there from JSQ Path if you need to drop off car) and got GREAT service at a great price, and they worked great with my insurance company too (AAA). I do not think they "cheaped out" on anything but they were $1,500 cheaper than Avel eastimated for me!!! In fact they touched up a little spot on my bumper "just because" and didn't charge me or the insurance co. for it. I highly recommend them, I would got back in a heartbeat if I needed autobody work.

The place you are referring to is called Avel Auto Works. I *tried* to use them for auto body work and it was not a good experience. I went back and forth three times and couldn't even get an estimate. First I called and they told me to come in for an estimate. I went in and waited almost 30 minutes because the person who does the estimates was with another customer (apparently there is only 1 guy in the whole place that can do estimates). They told me I should come back at 2pm for the estimate. I went back at 2pm and the guy was nowhere to be found, and they had no idea when he would be back. So I went home again and called the place back about 3 hours later to see if the guy was available. I was told he was busy. That's the end of that story.
I ended up going to A&L Auto Body on Newark Ave. near 5th St. The guy was nice and they did a good job. My only complaint was that when I got the estimate he told me he would give me a discount off the estimate price, but after the work was actually done there was no discount.

Autobody Shop on Marin?

We have a car that has some minor damage that we want fixed and we'd like to use a place in Jersey City for convenience. I noticed there is a huge autobody shop on Marin. I forget the name...it's something like Avenel or something like that? Has anyone here used them? Are they reputable and do they do a good job? Thanks so much!

Corner of Chestnut and Pavonia Avenues.
Not only reasonable, but the cleanest place (for an old facility) that I've ever seen. He was able to finally get my Toyota running right after having the dealership and another mechanic miss the problem. His English is a bit hard to understand (he speaks Korean), but he is meticulous and reliable. (201) 659-5872 | 475 Pavonia Ave Jersey City, NJ 07306 The following is a pretty accurate review made by another customer: http://www.yelp.com/biz/summit-automo ... id:huhRTObNPEgV8qCrFZ8m5Q

I don't know what happened at Pete's Village Texaco (4th & BRUNSWICK) -- maybe it is because Pete isn't there much anymore, but my last few visits went poorly -- the worst thing is that they didn't even fix what was wrong -- but also their prices have gone WAY up and their turn around time has really SLOWED down. Maybe they have gotten too many people who read jclist now going there -- I don't know. The mechanics doing the work are still great but the front desk has really changed. I had used Pete for many years and recommended Village Texaco to everyone but I've lost faith in this shop.
Just a word to the wise.

I'm not sure how you feel about chain stores but I really like Firestone on RT 139. Mickey Shah is the manager and he's very friendly and is upfront with what you need and what you don't need.
It's just north of Central Avenue, very close to Summit. I trust them over local mechanics. (If I'm wrong. please tell me!)

Does anyone know a decent and trustworthty mechanic in the area? If this has been covered in other posts - I couldn't find them in my search - please direct me to it.
My car broke down on the highway tonight, I think it's the transmission.

+1 for SipAuto Body Shop. I dealt with them last year when my 2007 Yaris was side swiped and needed some body work. The mechanic did a good job on my car, it was speedy, and overall nice guys to deal with. The guy who worked on my car was Jorge Madrid, I have known him for a few years, and go to him whenever I have car issues. He's trustworthy, not much I can say about those other mechanics around town.

for mechanic stuff, I've liked Summit a lot - they're kind of loosey-goosey on the scheduling (they often just say 'call me that morning and drop it off') but they're transparent and non-sketchy and they'll talk openly to you (remarkable for an auto repair place)
I've taken my Civic (until it was stolen) and am taking my Golf there, they've done good work, and aren't out to make any boat payments off you...

DO NOT USE AAMCO. The guys there are super nice, but they will rip you off super bad. I like Meinieke just a few blocks past Aamco on JFK. I had my transmission replaced, but by the dealer. Yes, of course it cost more, but it came with a 15,000 mile warranty on the parts and labor. Most other mechanics will give you only 3,000 miles.

Transmission slipping need a recommendation for repair

Can anyone recommend a good place to get a transmission repaired in JC or anywhere else close by. I have a 2002 mazda millenium and the dealer says I need a new transmission and both axles. Does anyone know if Aamco on Kennedy Blvd is any good? I know some other Aamco shops that have not been good. Or can anyone recommend another transmission place? I need to get this done asap.

This is a good idea. I think I'll try the Journal Square area, since I can take the PATH home. The ones downtown -- like A&L and A1/Avel -- seem to be only good if insurance is paying. Anyone know of other bodyshops in the Journal Square area I could try?

This past summer I went to A&L Auto Body at Newark Ave. & 5th St. (right across from the fire station). They did a good job. I had to get a dent removed between two doors. It cost over $900 which seemed high to me, but it was paid for by the insurance company of the guy that hit me so I didn't really care about the price.
I tried Avel Auto Works first and had a terrible experience. They made me come back 3 times (the same day) just to get an estimate and even after the third time the receptionist told me the guy was too busy to speak with me, so I never even got the estimate and took my business to A&L.

For bodywork, I've used the Getty station on Marin and Bay. (The one on the right side) Guys name was Chad - did a great job on my Ford - lots of elbow grease and a written guarantee against rust for a number of years.
It used to be called Akain Autoworks, but the business has been split into two. The mechanics on the left side are to be avoided. I took a truck there to get the brakes fixed and they charged me for skimming the rotors and fitting pads. I checked the rotors and they were all scored, so I took it back and had them fix it. Rip off! They also "fixed" my AC and billed me for it - but it still doesn't work - Never again! For anything mechanical I use Summit Auto (Summit Ave) - very sound work. You can also use Ziggy on 7th and Division - but he's very expensive and I only use him if the insurance company is paying.

I got into an accident recently and got two estimates for the body work from Sernio?s and Sip Autobody. Sip Autobody came in about 25% cheaper and I was happy with their work. It?s not exactly downtown but it?s convenient to the JSQ PATH. Either one can give you an estimate in 10 minutes so if you have the time it might be worth shopping around. There?s a bunch of chop shop looking places hidden around The Beacon area if you really want something cheap though. I just don?t know too much about them.

Downtown Bodyshops?

Dukes 2 is no more, and that has me upset. George has gone and sold his 2nd Street bodyshop -- the cheapest in the area -- and moved back to Argentina. I don't know how he could have done this to me. The place is still there, but now just a mechanic shop.
So, does anyone know a bodyshop in the downtown area (downtown only, please) that does decent work at super-reasonable prices? I tried Avel, but it was way high. I think a lot of places are used to charging insurance companies and billing a fortune. I need a dirt-cheap place for the driver who's paying out-of-pocket.
