Vega says he uses his SUV to get around the city and that he's not above sacrifice. He received his vehicle in 9/09 after he was arrested and suspended by the county thereby losing his county SUV. The city's business administrator stated weeks ago that they've clocked Vega's monthly mileage at 1,000 plus. Vega is using the city SUV as he did the countys to travel to his Catskill ski chalet in Fleischmanns NY on weekends so there you go. We're subsidizing this cretin to play in the snow. The next mass protest should be up in the Catskills where he's Mr. goody two-shoes. That will shake him up you betcha!!

Give up the cars damn it and start brown bagging it!

When Michael Dukakis was Governor of Mass., he gave up his state car and took the subway to work.
Did one car make a huge difference? Probably not. But it was symbolic and one thing he did get out of it was good press, just like Bloomberg taking the subway to work.

If the council gives up their cars it will be kicking and screaming.
And they look like douches in the process.

Actually, one of the few people who probably need a 24 hour on-call car is Healy's press secretary, cause you never know when Healy will be wandering around naked or in a bar fight in the middle of the night, but Healy should probably pay for that out of his own pocket.

Jersey City mayor plans to take back some workers' city cars; Councilman Fulop wants them all back

Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy plans to reduce the number of employees who have municipal vehicles by 20 percent.

But the move is not enough for Councilman Steven Fulop, who thinks take-home vehicles are a perk that needs to be done away with.

Healy released details of his plan late Friday.

The mayor said 39 vehicles are assigned to city employees, not including police. Among those with take-home cars are Healy, six City Council members, department and division heads, and employees who Healy said are on "24-hour call," including some of his aides and his press secretary.

"We are looking at every area where we can cut and we are cutting," Healy said in a statement. "As we have said before, everything is on the table and we have to make every reasonable reduction."

Fulop believes the cars should be strictly for work and kept at the job. "If the city supplies an employee with a car, it should be for the work day only, period. Every mile they put on the car should be accounted," he said.

He has proposed an ordinance, up for introduction tonight, that would have all the cars clearly labeled, "Official Business City of Jersey City."

"This way if someone sees a Jersey City labeled car sitting outside a bar at 2 a.m., the taxpayers can file a complaint with the state," he said. "No more secret cars and free gas for the politically connected."

In addition to looking to reduce the fleet, Healy noted he placed a limit on gasoline over a year ago. The city covers the cost of one tank of gas or 18 gallons per week, whichever costs less.

City Council members who get cars disagree with Fulop and say the vehicles are essential to their positions.

"We realize these are difficult times," said Councilman Bill Gaughan, who has a city car. "We've given up 12 furlough days like everyone else, but at some point you need vehicles to perform your job."

Councilman Mariano Vega, who took a city car after he was charged with political corruption this summer and lost his county vehicle, questioned how much eliminating the vehicles would save the city.

"Does it make fiscal sense, does it make policy sense, those are the things that you have to ask," Vega said. "I use it to get around the city. I'm not above sacrifice. That's not the issue for me. What does it do for the city?"

He suggested that employees who live outside the city be required to leave the cars at work.

Councilman Michael Sottolano noted that people with city-issued cars pay federal taxes on them. "It's not something that's totally free," he said.

Sottolano said he uses his vehicle strictly for city business.

"I've had this vehicle for about five years. I pay federal taxes on it. I think I've put 17 to 18,000 miles on it," he said. "I use it daily.
