Re: JC Schools

As someone who teaches in an inner city urban NJ district I feel your pain, but it is not really getting better. The pre-k through 8 school I find to be awful on both ends of the spectrum. It is terrible for the little ones and the 6th through 8th graders do not learn to take personal responsibility. There is also too much focus on discipline, math, language arts, and any of the other standardized testable subjects. Enrichment subjects are really just treated as prep periods for other teachers. The vision of Horace Mann has been lost.

or the Character could just need a different writer. Brian Michael Bendis took multiple D list heroes from Marvel and made them huge.

I don't like the character because shes basically a Mr. Fantastic rip off(power wise).

It's just lazy to throw a demographic map up and say "look, pockets of ethnic people. Ghettos!"

LoL you do realize that the term "Ghetto" was originally used to designate where Jewish people were allowed to live.

Try doing an observation in a non downtown Jersey City public elementary school.

You could buy some iguanas or frogs. They each roaches. Certain species of wasps will also lay their eggs in the roaches.

It could be an immigration issue. As there are many 1st generation immigrants in Jersey City, even if they are educated. Traffic laws are much more lax in other countries or not enforced and they bring those rules with them.

Technically its a 3 way stop. An all way stop would mean that traffic is coming from all directions.

As a caveat, I am much more familiar with JC than Newark but it is foolish to equate the two school systems.

The Jersey City Public Schools have the benefit of an outstanding Superintendent and a flourishing population, both of which has dramatically improved student outcomes in our public schools.

Newark has a waning population and a fleet of half-empty public schools. Their trajectory is nowhere near as optimistic as ours.

Do the JC district schools still need improvement? Of course they do. But we are on the right track and don't let anybody paint all urban schools with the same broad, nasty brush.

Parents across the city of all backgrounds are seeing their children succeed here.

How about that there seems to be "de facto" segregation at the elementary level in Jersey City?

There was an ambulance trying to get back to the medical center on grand. It couldn't even get through traffic.

As usual Jersey City fails to coordinate traffic. There is a way to maximize the flow of traffic, while having pedestrian safety.

I moved to JC last summer but held onto my job teaching in the Bronx. It makes sense to teach in Jersey City but I haven't heard great things about the school system.
Anyone have experience teaching in both NYC and JC that can compare the two?

I have not been in both districts, but classroom management in JC is a constant battle. It depends on what school you teach in also and what part of town.

A huge part of the problem in JC is the fact that traffic lights and crosswalk signals are not coordinated. Every other city I know of has them automatically synced. It is pathetic that JC can't get this right. As it is pedestrians don't get a crosswalk signal unless they push the button.

The problem is too many dumb drivers see there is no crosswalk signal and wrongly assume they have the right of way. This is very dangerous. Pedestrians in crosswalks always have the right of way as long as they are going with the traffic light.

It boggles the mind that pedestrians have to push a button to cross major roads like Columbus or Marin. When is there ever not a group waiting at intersections to cross these streets.

JC needs to move beyond its antiquated focus on cars only...

Pedestrains are supposed to go with the crosswalk signal.. thats why its there. There are intersections where its designed to be a "walk" signal but a red light for drivers. If people took their heads out of their phones....

You must know you can handle the driver , because I think you will get your ass handed to you in a second.

Yeah this. There are some intersections in which the lights and walk signals are coordinated differently. Its green for cars, but don't walk for pedestrians, but when its walk for pedestrians its full red for all vehicles. Well someone crossed against it and hit my car and I did follow them for about half a block.

I am all for pedestrian rights, but at least follow the current laws in place.

Move. There are still too many parents and families who do not set their students up for going to school in Jersey City. Student performance starts at home.

This is a district where the parents that come in for parent/teacher conference day/night are never the the parents of students who need to come in. So much time of class is dedicated to management that instruction takes a back seat.

They buy up the neighborhood and if you try to stand strong they make it horrible for you to live and devalue your home as you can only sell to them.

Ok so I've read one person describe it as Texas style, but no mention of hot links or brisket. Also the style of sauce is not mentioned either.

Anyone know what type of wood they're using?

The police don't address parking. They have said its not their job, its for the parking authority.

The Jersey City police don't seem to believe in the broken windows philosophy, or they have a threshold on which crimes can be committed in this city.

Also if those were coyotes in that video, they are two of the most well fed coyotes. Coyotes usually are much more slender and coats aren't as full.
