Re: The Coffee Shop near Grove PATH

Went there this morning and had an egg, cheese & taylor ham sandwich on a kaiser roll. Aside from being a heart attack waiting to happen it was quite good. The coffee was good but not quite hot enough. I think they are still working out a lot of logistical kinks but it was nice not to have to wait in a long starbucks line and pray that a table was available.

Hey I know I'm probably going to get sniped at because a lot of people don't seem to like the owner. But in the interest of fairness I have to post my recent good experiences at this place.

They have a little food bar in the corner that is run by a Filipino guy and its very good. Last week I had a Philly cheese steak for $8 and it was very good and the guy even threw in some fries with it. Tonight I had a beef quesadilla with rice and beans for $7. It was substantial and quite tasty.

Was drinking Jim Beam all night and it was reasonably priced. Their drink specials seem pretty decent.

Sure like many people I think there are things about this whole "complex" that could be improved but its only right to acknowledge some things they are doing right IMHO

Ok.... back to the original topic of the thread. Does anybody yet know if the way they stabilized the foundation is permanent? Or can it be made permanent? Or does the building have to come down?

Newark from Grove to Barcade is closed to all traffic including foot traffic. They are trying to figure out if the foundation of 143 Newark can be stabilized, even on a temporary basis if possible to mitigate any sort of collateral damage When all the dust settles on this thing some of us should make an effort to visit some of these businesses if you like them. They are losing a days business and that has to be financially hurting them big time especially if this thing stretches out very long.

The building in question is located right next to Rainbow on one side and next to an area being developed on its other side. That. spot is where a massive fire occurred about seven years ago. I think it is called the John Mullins building or something like that name.

They are closing the area from two boots to the shoe store and the sidewalk. This was all heard from the fire chief on scene giving direction. Of course they are concerned about infrastructure like tunnels, water, gas and whatever pandoras box of stuff maybe under the street. A lot of the businesses like litm and rainbow have closed or are closing right now.

Just down on Newark Ave and portions of the street are closed. Old building that Hard Grove was relocating to may fall. They were digging near the foundation and now the building is unstable. They are extending the area blocked off to be larger and now include the sidewalk, so you won't be able to walk through Newark to Erie. So far plans are to control how the building is demolished

I would think there would be enough business for both. Good luck to all. Just glad the new one opened so close to me near 1st St, so I'll probably mostly support that one for now.

I am a 53 yr old retired FMF Corpsman with a bullet in his ass. I don't think I fit anyone's definition a hipster...lol I just like mexican food.

As long as they don't start mugging people I suppose I can live with a few skinny jeans wearing taco eaters.

Half an hour later the lazy delivery calls my cell phone instead of ringing the door. We get the food and the order is completely screwed up, they missed an entire entree. Call and the manager is a jerk, just gave me complaints and excuses was totally unapologetic. They offered to send the correct order but didn't offer to comp it anything and just told me to "calm down."

Why on earth I ordered from here I have no idea-- I was extremely happy with Tacqueria Viva Mexico-- there is no reason EVER to deal with this place.

Thats why I prefer to walk the three whole blocks when I live that close but to each his own I guess. Have had too many bad delivery experiences at other places in the past so I'd rather schlep it myself which is why I like places that are close to me.

I also find that generally when I order food in person the quality has been better. Maybe it shouldn't be that way but that is my experience here in Jersey City.

Just stop by and had two Carnitas Tacos that were very good. I've been walking by and didn't even realize they were open yet. This location is just for take out, delivery and catering and has no seating. Menus are outside and prices are reasonable for authentic Mexican food IMHO. Taqueria 354 Grove St Jersey City, NJ 07302

IMHO a 16 or 17 year old is a "young man" and should be treated as such. All of a sudden on his 18th birthday someone is a mature adult? I'm not talking about the law which I understand may have to draw definitive lines. All three of my godsons were very mature at 17 and solid citizens at this age as they should have been. They were not perfect and a little wild as I would expect a young man to possibly act. But none of them was stupid or morally corrupt enough to point a gun (real or fake) at anyone. At 17 a young man should have a real understanding that this behavior is very very wrong. This is punk behavior and I hope the young men find themselves into the military or another disciplined program where they may turn their lives around.

Digging up all over it seems including Grove near Newark. Might want to run some water while we can. Can't imagine it is going to stay on everywhere while it is getting fixed.

See what happened to me on the other thread this past Sunday when there was a very minor ice/rain storm. The whole line from Newark to Journal Square was down. Not hard to imagine a FUBAR situation on Superbowl Sunday. Anyone that relies on the PA is living in a dream world.

Path stranded hundreds of people at Newark Station Sunday night. Tracks were iced so they had to suspend service in the very minor ice/rain storm which may have been understandable. The extreme lack of communication it provided to riders waiting on the cold dock for over an hour after paying caused extreme distress to folks. All while path employees were seen huddled in their warm office laughing and drinking coffee till they figured out how to close the window blinds.

It will be interesting to if an incident like this happens on Superbowl Sunday. Quite frankly a part of me wishes that it does to highlight the extreme communication & service problems that exist on the PATH.

At 11:00 I departed a train from Trenton and made my way to the PATH platform to get on the PATH train scheduled to leave at 11:20. Usually there is a train waiting there and sometimes they open the doors early so people can stay warm till they depart. Other times they let folks freeze and open the train at 11:19. Tonight no train waiting. No train at 11:20. No announcements. I can see the warm PATH employee behind a microphone but she won't acknowledge anyone.

11:30.... no train and no announcement. Nothing posted on the tv scroll either.

11:45....no train and no announcement. Damn its cold. Consider going into warm area and re-paying for my ride if I have to give up another 2.50.

11:55....still no announcement but wait here comes a train! Hooray. Train pulls up and hundreds stand at the doors waiting to get out of frigid temperatures.

12:00....doors still not open

12:05....doors not open. Lights in train go dark and still no announcements.

12:10....1st announcement made that there will be a 30 minute delay

12:11....announcements made that service suspended indefinitely.

Don't expect these folks to recklessly run a train if they don't competently think they can do it. But at any point they could have informed people what was going on and what choices may have existed. A bus downstairs was running to Journal Square. NJTransit trains were slowed but were getting to 33rd Street. Of course the taxis were a resource also. Myself and a NJ State Trooper (God bless her) were standing in a crowd telling people where to go and what to do.

PATH communication = Epic Fail

My personal commute ended when I got home at 2:30 am...three hours late with questions to answer at home.... lol

Just recently returned from Tacloban where many Filipinos came to the aid of others. Now here in our own community there are some people caring enough to give something to those that just got crushed by simple bad luck.

It is very refreshing to know there are community businesses out there like Porto, Two Boots and Grove Bistro giving back to the neighborhood. Thanks to Candice Osbourne and anyone else that has been considerate enough to help these poor folks burned out of their homes. Good to know that I live among some heroes.

It's my impression that there are more homeless hanging out in Grove Plaza since the Bistro opened. I attribute that, without any supporting data, to the sale of decent pizza at $1.25. Now that's ironic!

Unless you go after 11pm. It is now 2 bucks after 11pm. Guess they figure after 11 that the late night crowd will pay it. Added it in chalk next to the big 1.25 a slice sign. The last 2 slices I had there were also diminished quality. Free market goes both ways thou. I've now gone from 4 slices a week there after work to 0 slices a week & had 2 beautiful slices at Buon Appetit for lunch today on my day off. lol...the homeless aren't there for pizza.

Take a ride up to St Lucys shelter and check out the unlocked bikes leaning on the fence. Just be careful. Nobody is going to let you "steal" a bike that they have already "boosted".

Actually encouraging that some folks have had good experiences at some local reputable auto shops. Had a bad inspection experience at the place on Bay Street.

I've also had several good encounters with Joe's Auto Electric and would recommend them.

Forget her husband...She committed tax and insurance fraud. Just because she never properly suffered the legal consequences doesn't mean she didn't do it. It is a matter of public record.

I don't know if her opponent has any skeletons in his closet but I do know that he served his country as a Marine in Vietnam. He served as police officer in Jersey City and has made positive contributions to his community.

I understand that politics breeds strange bedfellows. I live in Ward E and voted for the entire Fulop ticket but honestly putting Ms Lopez on his ticket was a stain on his candidacy IMHO.

I've been paying very close attention. I have respect for Levin but will not vote for him. He very clearly has been hypocritical in his reaction towards Healy policy in this campaign. He is a good guy but he sold out. You looked at that action and looked at Mr. Levin's past and made your informed decision. I did the same thing then made mine. I will not vote for Levin.
