A great sigh of relief could be heard all throughout the city were educated, unencumbered and informed voters were gathered last night.

Steve and his soon to be realized council have a lot on their plate and a great deal to prove to us all. As smart, concerned citizens we need to stay involved and need to keep our voices heard. We also have to rally around him 100% while his transition is in play.

I can only imagine the resistance and indignation he is about to face as he wades through all the BS and red tape surrounding the entrenched HCDO and what Healy left in front of him. Rest assured there are a lot of people over at City Hall and the HCDO that are not particularly pleased with last nights results. The roadblocks Steve is about to face will test every fiber of his character.

This is just the beginning folks!

Thankfully, we have a new mayor who will actively listen to our concerns, this much has been proven time and time again by Steven's open and honest style of governing and his commitment to reply to us when we have concerns. Because of this I firmly believe we can help shape the future and restore some semblance of dignity and respect that Jersey City deserves.

I look forward to Steve's first 100 days and what he lays out for our city. Keep in mind the council chambers are open to all of us the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month at 6:00 PM, unless otherwise designated. Steve and his new council campaigned on transparency and an open government. These men and women want our help and thoughtful suggestions as they set up shop.

My gratitude goes out to all of you who voted and recognized that this election was an important one. I also want to thank all the volunteers who put in countless hours to bring last night to reality. Amazing grass roots effort!!!

The Jersey City Clerk has ruled that there will be a runoff for at-large, but this isn't over yet. Stay tuned.

If indeed we do have voting machines that track the number of voters who cast at least one at-large vote, then we should hope that number is 29,510 or less. 29,510 divided by 2, plus 1, is 14,756, and that's the number of votes received by Joyce Watterman (the top vote-getter). New Jersey Statutes Section 40:45-18 says that if at least one candidate received a majority, the top three candidates are elected without a runoff necessary, and "majority" is defined as half the number of voters who cast at least one vote for an at-large candidate, plus one.

But old voting machines don't have that sub-counter, just an overall counter. And if we don't have that sub-counter, then srg1 is correct. The formula is in New Jersey Statute 40:45-18:

"Voting machines to be used in the election shall be equipped, as soon as practicable, with one or more counters so connected as to keep a tally of the number of voters who cast votes for one or more of the candidates for councilman-at-large (or commissioner, or village trustee). Until suitable counters have been provided, or whenever the tally of the number of voters cannot be determined for any reason, then the number constituting the majority of the votes cast shall be computed by adding all the votes cast for each candidate for that office, dividing that total by twice the number of councilmen-at-large ... to be elected and then adding one."

There were 83,473 votes cast for at-large candidates. Divide by 6, then add 1, and a "majority" is defined as 13,913 votes. That would mean Watterman, Lavarro and Rivera each exceeded the majority and no runoff would be needed.

But if Watterman didn't receive a "majority" under whichever method is correct, then we have to have a runoff according to section 40:45-19. That section provides that the number of candidates will be twice the number of seats there are to fill. And if that happens, the runoff will be between 6 candidates: Watterman, Lavarro, Rivera, Richardson, Brennan and Perez. Connelly and Regaldo are out.

Can someone answer the question about what type of voting machines we have, and whether there was a counter of how many people cast at least one vote for an at-large seat?

Do the machines now have voter counters? If not, my understanding is that we add up the at large votes which I believe is 83395. We divide by twice the number of elected people (6) and get 13899. We add one to get to 13,900. Therefore, I would think that anyone with more than 13,900 votes would get elected. Perhaps the machines now have voter counts which changes the analysis? Or am I reading this incorrectly? Or did the law change?

The voting machines now count how many people vote for at-large candidates. Whether you vote for one, two, or three at-larges you are considered one at- large voter. My understanding is that that the 50%+1 number was just over 15,000, so if true, there is a run-off. They used to have a formula they applied (up through the '09 election) that was based on a historical average of (I think) 2.1 at-large votes per 1 mayoral vote cast.

biggest loser of the election - dan levin. Candice wiped the floor with him. I mean, he would have probably done as well if he ran by himself or on another slate....healy did not help at all.
