For $600 or $450 per roommate (depending on 3 or 4 share) Downtown, short walk to the Grove PATH subway, there is a duplex apartment - 2 full floors with 3 or 4 bedrooms at 301 Newark Avenue -- I think the rent is only $1800 - so it really could be a great cheap share! i think he just painted it and what not. Call Ram at 201.653.5596 or see him in his store at same address -- he is there from 10am to 7pm most days. BTW... His store on Newark Avenue is also going up for rent at $1500 per month. He is easy going about credit checks as well.

Best advice imo is look for a share in 3 bedroom.
They're out there and craigslist and here have posted them. Sign up for both RSS feed here and google alerts.

If you can up your budget to $750, find a roommate who can also pay $750, you can have a 3 bed / 2 bath with central A/C in the Heights.

You could probably be in Harrison for $700ish and walkable distance to the PATH.
I lived there for a year, it's kinda weird there but not too bad. As far as living in downtown JC for $700, yeah sorry, I pay over twice that much for a 1 BR. You could just try craigslist north jersey listings, you might find a place around JC. http://newjersey.craigslist.org

Check out Kearny, one town over bordering JC. I left a big, nice (but not fancy) 1 BR in a pre-war elevator building about 3 years ago that I was paying $750 for. It's safe and pretty convenient in terms of highway access and buses to NYC.

In 1990 I paid $750 for a one bedroom in Hamilton Park. There's no way you'll find that now (except for maybe an illegal basement apartment).

Where did you grown up expecting that kind of a price range in this area of town ? You should consider changing jobs at the rate of pay you are working for, or give up some ammenities in your life.

That's really not possible. You probably need to look into a roomate situation.

Your request for a 1 BR for $700 is not likely to be found in downtown JC. A change in strategy and expectations is likely needed.
Do you really need an apt in downtown JC? Do you need your own apartment? are you able to deviate from the $700 budget? you may need to bend on one or more of those conditions. In downtown JC, $700 will not get you a legal studio. Sharing a 3BR with two room mates may be an option. Journal Square is not far, but even there you may need to adjust your budget upward if you absolutely need your own apt. Other areas may also be considered: Queens, BKLN, other towns in NJ.

If you're willing to share an apartment, that amount is fine. Especially if you're willing to live uptown instead of downtown.

LOL.. union city or west new york are the only places you'll find in that price range that aren't illegal apartments, but good luck.

I'm looking for a 1 bedroom apt in the downtown area. I'll take the smallest place in the world. Can only afford $650 with utilities. Please let me know if you know of anything.
Thanks
