The smell could be from the fish souce.

It could be quite a funk if you are not used to it.

They have by far the best Pho on this side of Hudson.

Gotta love the place.

Yeah - you're right, the smell is funny if you're not used to it

This is not a normal cooking oil smell, it is a filthy stench.

Hey BOlew,

It's a hybrid - and i'm only saying this because there's some jello in it - i don't remember jello in Halo-Halo in the Filipino places.

Congratulations - you found the best place to eat Downtown.

Try the Halo-Halo for dessert, it's a great finish for a summer dinner.

The convenience store next door also sells good Vietnamese delicacies.

OMG I ate here yesterday and it was really good. It is not fancy, nor does it delivery, but its quality food with large portions for a great price. Not that generic oily crap other "fancy" places are serving. The menue is huge, but does not offer too many vegetarian options. Great spicy minty fresh tasting food.
I tried to convince them to carry fake meat, but the guy thought I was crazy.
I'm going to eat here again tonight.

I love the 3 Flavors Beef with Vermicelli. One looks kinda like a stuffed grape leaf, another has a great peanutty flavor and the other is that funky red BBQ meat color-flavor that you usually find with Chinese pork. And then there's all the pickles too! Sometimes I think I'll pick a different dish, but I've grown to really love those 3 Flavors!

Re: the durian shake - two of my friends tried it last week and it gave them major stomach pains that lasted through the next day. The avocado shake is great, though not as good as the one at Saigon Caf?.

Is it true Nha Trang makes banh mi on weekends? Any veg versions?

Yeah!!!

I've been going to this place for years - best lunch in Jersey City, and free parking!

Just watch out for the floors - a little slippery, leave the stillettos home.

-Soup # 12 Beef Navel with Round Eye (sounds funny - look at the menu) delicious!

-The beef stew appetizer is a complete meal for $3.50

-ask for Halo-Halo for dessert, it's a Southeast Asian specialty.

I've eaten on the streets of Ho CHi Minh city and it tastes the same.

Durian shake eh?

I ate at Pho Thang Long when it was first opened. The food was alright, but I went back there on another occasion and the food was not as good. It was late in teh evening and maybe the chef has gone for the night! I like the Vietnamese restaurant downtown on Newark better. Hey, there's a new Vietnamese restaurant on Westside called Thanh Huong Restaurant. The place is nice and the food is ok. I notice the price changed a few times (gone up, of course) and sometimes's they would closed the restaurant without notice!! That's not good because I was in a craving for their soup one day and sure enough, they closed the store.

You probably wouldn't like to know what that pho stock is made from.

I like the pho # 17 or 18 (I think) at Nha Trang.

It is the one with the little mini pork chops that you can put in it. MMMMMmmmmm.

With Viet food it is more about what I am afraid to order. I mean I know it won't hurt me but I am always afraid that "tendon" is an unlisted ingredient in something.

The fried fish, whole. Once we were seated with a Vietnamese family (the place was crowded) and that's what they were eating. The next time, we tried it, and it's really good. Easily feeds two, maybe three. I think it's around 17, 20 dollars.

What is the greasy paper? Is it the menu? I don't think you are talking about Nha Trang Place.

As most people said, it's a very 'no-frills' kind of place, and clearly it's lacking in a few areas. But the food is great and the prices are hard to beat. A greasy paper won't stop me from going. You missed out.

Ca phay sua da or Vietnamese coffee is made with a coffee press that rests on top of a mug that has some sweetened condensed milk on the bottom. You just need to buy that Vietnamese coffee press, some French roast beans and sweetened condensed milk, and a book to read while the coffee drips, and you're good to go!

i've never eaten at saigon cafe, only b/c i have not one, but two friends who got food poisoning after eating there.

i love nha trang though!! i agree that you can't ever go wrong w/ any of the pho's (esp. if you're hungover or have a cold), the grilled beef and vermicelli, the summer rolls and especially the beef with vietnamese green leaf. yum!

the table service isn't the greatest, but the guy who usually works the cash register is always nice and extremely gracious. i saw him working as a bagger at pathmark not too long ago... made me respect him all the more, for having two on-the-feet jobs.

I have to agree. I've been going there quite often lately (hooked on the pho!). We took friends there on Saturday. Picked up some wine and beer to bring, then the five of us feasted and the tab came to $41. Can't beat that. Service is not the greatest. They have about three waiters and you kind of just have to flag them down if you want something. But for the price it's worth it. Don't go there looking for an all around great dining experience, go there for great food that comes fast and at a great price.

Nha Trang is one of best Vietamese places I have ever been.

I always order Pho and they never fail.

I often see natives doing somekind of DIY grilling but I have no idea what they are. Would love to try.

My Best Choice is ICE COFFEE!

I know it's not a meal. But if you like coffee. You'd LOVE their coffee. Handsdown BEST ICED COFFEE EVER! If you have 4 bucks to spend on Starbucks Iced Mocha whatever, get 2 cups of the best coffee creation you can ever lay your hands on from NHA TRANG!

Sorry, I can't remember the name of this place, but since their menu is so expansive, I was wondering what everyone has enjoyed most.

My first couple of times there I tried the more Chinese-food like items and was underwhelmed, but since then I've gone for the Vietnamese specialties and been really surprised at how good they are.

Unfortunately I also don't have a menu in front of me so I don't know names, but a few things I thought were fantastic:

-The summer rolls with shrimp - very fresh, nice delicate wrap

-The three flavor grilled beef

-The beef in Vietnamese Green Leaf - you roll it up with veggies and other stuff in rice paper.

-The Vietnamese "water spinach" in garlic sauce - mmm, such a great, delicate flavor, and tastes very healthy too

-The grilled pork with rice stick that you wrap in the lettuce leaves
