Wow, that's news to me. I wonder exactly how much they cost and if there's a limit to how many the city can/does issue?

Does everything being built these days have to be built with the absolute 100% cheapest crap available?
Can't we get at least a whiff of style on some of these giant projects? This is some Eastern Block stuff happening up on 10th St.

Here's a question: I live around the corner from Hamilton Park and yesterday I parked my car on Coles between 9th and 10th behind a Mini Cooper with a CANADIAN license plate and a JC parking permit. How is this even possible!?

I remember the hoops I had to jump through to get my parking permit when I moved to JC (not only did I have to prove that I was a JC resident with a utility bill, etc. but I also had to update my registration to reflect the fact that I'm a JC resident) and I cannot believe that someone FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY, let alone another state was issued a JC parking permit!

Golden Cicada Closed?

Friend of mine told me that he's tried to go two weekends in a row and it was closed. I know there were rumors Terry had sold the place, but I was hoping for some kind of news or announcement before they closed so I could have one final karaoke blow out there. Hope it's not true...

does anyone know exactly what building in the heights they're referring to in that NYT article? it's never named, but it's apparently a converted suitcase factory.

I'm right on the corner of 10 & Jersey, across from the Hamilton Inn, so even with the driving ban I figured I'd be able to sneak into town as long as the pulaski and 139 are clear, but it's not worth risking unless I definitely have power.

Does anyone know what the driving situation is like around 10th & Jersey? Been camping out at a friend's house in PA since Saturday, but I was hoping to head back today since it sounds like I might have power back in my place...

whiteboy19, what do you think of verizon DSL's speed? what's the quality of the streaming from netflix? i would gladly pay $31 for verizon DSL instead of almost $70 for cable internet from comcast if they're comparable.

has anyone noticed that comcast's internet prices just went UP again? i've been paying $52.57/month for just cable internet, which is bad enough, and i just got my bill for november and it's now up to $67.55! absolutely ridiculous. i'm going to call and complain ASAP. i wish i had another option for internet service, but the only other service available in my area is verizon DSL which i'm not interested in.

there should definitely be stop signs at monmouth & 10th, coles & 10th, jersey & 10th, AND manila & 10th. of course a stop sign doesn't necessarily mean a car will actually stop. i wouldn't be opposed to speed bumps being placed near those intersections to slow down speeding cars.

are you sure about that? i emailed them not too long ago and they said the JC location should be opening around sept. i really hope that's the case because i've been looking forward to this place opening for months. how can they not have adequate plumbing? it's a brand new building!?

does anyone know where i can get some good pancetta or guanciale in or around JC? and not that gross domestic stuff that they sell at A&P. i'd usually go into nyc to get it, but i only need a little bit for something i'm making and i don't feel like making that trip. it's the sort of thing any good italian specialty food store should sell. i cannot wait for buon italia to open!

re: using public space(s) for profit

Just can't stay away

anyone who walks by hamilton park regularly since it's re-opened has probably noticed that the tennis courts are almost constantly in use and there's even usually several groups of people waiting to use them.

i'm only mentioning this because a few days ago i noticed what looked like some guy giving lessons to a couple of people and then yesterday while i was jogging with a friend we stopped to check out the bulletin board at the park and noticed this guy's ad for cardio tennis. $20 a lesson and he's got several times listed on his flier. does anyone else think it's shitty of this guy to "reserve" blocks of time on the court so he can charge people for his cardio tennis crap? if no one was using the courts i wouldn't care, but i think it sucks because there's only two courts and people are almost always waiting to use them and then this guy comes from who knows where and uses this limited and in demand piece of public space for profit. if i showed up at 6:45 and started using the court he was supposd to have reserved for his class at 7 i wonder what he would do?

Re: Where do you get plants in this town?

Just can't stay away

this year is my first attempt at gardening. i built a 6'X4' raised bed and installed in my yard. filled it when garden soil and topped it off with some manure. planted a bunch of herbs, radishes, eggplant, peppers, and of course tomatoes. i got a little worried since the weather has been kinda crappy the past week or so and i thought the lack of sunlight would really hurt my tomatoes. a lot of the leaves turn brown and started to wilt, but it seems to have perked back up. question: does anyone know where i can get some organic straw mulch in or around JC? not sure if the garden store on 14th will have any, but i'll probably stop by sometime during the weekend to check.

Re: Hudson Park Hoboken - Is that a 5-a-side soccer pitch I can see from google maps satelite view?

Paul, the soccer field you're talking about is part of Frank Sinatra Park in Hoboken. I've never played there, but almost every time I pass by people are there playing. I know there's an adult soccer league in Hoboken and I'm pretty sure they have a summer league that plays there. That's the only park I know of in the area with actual soccer goals. I don't know what the rules are as to using the field.

A few summer ago I used to meet up with a group of folks at Liberty State Park on Sundays for pick-up games. No goals, just cones. It was fun, but we played the length of a full field and it was sometimes hard to get everything organized and running smoothly with the amount of people and vast differences of skill level. It's so much better to play on an actual soccer pitch.

I'm always down to play, but I don't have the time or the money to commit to a league. If there were a group of people who were down to play some pick-up-games maybe during weeknights or weekends I'd love to join in. Preferably something in Downtown JC or Hoboken.

i really hope this happens. not sure what the pricing is going to be like, but at the very least it should have an effect on the competition, of which there is too little. i currently get my internet from comcast and i just got a letter in the mail saying they're going to be raising their prices, shortly after my "introductory" price expired. i'm now going to be paying almost $60/month for internet access which is absolutely ridiculous. i'm going to be call them and see if i can't get that lowered to $50/month or else i will have to seriously consider switching service, but what else is there? verizon DSL? FIOS is not available in my area.
