Voice's Best of 2008:

Freshest fish in the City

Morgan Seafood Restaurant

2801 Kennedy Boulevard
Jersey City NJ, 201-792-2400

It used to be that "Go to the Greeks" was the best advice for someone seeking the freshest, unfussiest seafood, and we can remember many splendid Astorian meals of grilled whole fish with a just a squeeze of lemon, a handful of fries, and a feta-planked salad. But let us turn now to the Egyptians of Alexandria, who have an even sparer fish cuisine, based on grilled whole fish and fried fillets, served elegantly with a sauce of herbed tahini. Morgan Seafood (named after the pirate Henry Morgan?) is the top spot, where your fish choice is often limited to porgy, sea bass, mullet, and whiting. 2801 Kennedy Boulevard, Jersey City, New Jersey, 201-792-2400

I've never eaten there but hear the fish is pretty fresh.

If you didn't already know, the Linens and Things in JC is going out of business. I heard from someone at Toll Brothers that a Whole Foods or a Trader Joes might be taking over the location. What do you guys think? Any truth to this?

I ordered from Saigon Cafe recently because it was raining and I didn't feel like walking to Nha Trang. I always go to Nha Trang before Saigon Cafe because it is cheaper, but unfortunately Nha Trang does not deliver. Anyhow, it seems I ordered from an old menu and prices have increased by $1-2 on every item I ordered. So it seems now there is a significant difference in price between the two and not a corresponding difference in quality.

I just wished Nha Trang delivered.

I actually think Sal is asking very good questions of Mr. Fulop. NO elected official who works for the people should go unquestioned. I live in Ward E and I am generally a fan of Fulop's but am a bit disappointed with his seemingly hypocritical vote for this particular abatement.

I also think this is a perfectly good forum to discuss such things. This site is used as a communication tool by Fulop's supporters and Fulop himself to discuss various initiatives and issues, so I think it is completely appropriate to discuss some of his more questionable votes or other actions.

At the end of the day though, I don't think that this vote means that Fulop should be crucified and, if he decides to run for mayor in 2009, he will still likely shine as the candidate that gets my vote when held up against the alternatives.

That's funny, because I just got that stupid magazine too and the first page says "Jersey City, It's An Oasis". Then towards the bottom there's a picture of Mayor Quimby himself and a quote about the reservoir:

"The development in our city is storied and has been the key to our renaissance here, but it is just as important to provide open space for passive recreation, walking, jogging, and an opportunity for people to fish, canoe and appreciate nature."

Interesting.

Well, you know Spring has sprung when the local pimp is out in a white suit, white fedora, white shoes and white cane.

That was the scene yesterday. As I was walking near him, a car drove by and said to him:
"Hey, brother man, what's happening?"

Pimp responds:
"Alright, homie. Alright."

That pimp is a cool cat. Wish someone had a picture.

As most people said, it's a very 'no-frills' kind of place, and clearly it's lacking in a few areas. But the food is great and the prices are hard to beat. A greasy paper won't stop me from going. You missed out.

Parkman and everyone else involved, thanks for all the hard work. We have really enjoyed the dog run. I try to go at "off" times when the place isn't packed with the dog owner social club, and my dog usually gets quite a workout, actually. A few intense sprints after some sticks of a ball is a big energy release for her. So thank you. Many happy dogs around town since the run opened up, and it's brought quite a few more people to the park as well.

trp3- have you ever heard of dog shelters? Rescue groups? Unfortunately, most dogs don't have the luxury of choosing whether they get to live in Jersey City or in Short Hills. There are many happy dogs in Jersey City and I'm sure they're very thankful that they get to live in homes with loving owners rather than in some cage or put to sleep.

grovester, doesn't matter which you try first, but definitely try both and report back here.

If you work in Hackensack and haven't been already, you gotta try Lido's (on Main Street in the Fairmont section). It's a no-frills pitcher of beer and pizza kind of place with great thin-crust pizza and the best steak sandwiches anywhere. It's been there forever. I used to go there as a kid and haven't been a while, but I know it's still there. Yum.

Saying young female wearing clothes doesn't help identify an individual and is to genaral to id someone.

Happy to be proven wrong!

If I'm wrong, I expect to be described as a man only - not fat or tall, white or black!

I don't think this ordinance will be passed, however I think it's meant at the very least to send a message to local politicians that pay to play type conflicts of interest are a major concern of the voting public and that people are watching. If current laws in place are not enforced, people are willing to take other measures, such as this.

I have to agree. I've been going there quite often lately (hooked on the pho!). We took friends there on Saturday. Picked up some wine and beer to bring, then the five of us feasted and the tab came to $41. Can't beat that. Service is not the greatest. They have about three waiters and you kind of just have to flag them down if you want something. But for the price it's worth it. Don't go there looking for an all around great dining experience, go there for great food that comes fast and at a great price.

I don't see anything wrong with Ethan Crane criticizing Newport's design and layout (or lack thereof). It's his opinion and mine too, and I'm sure plenty of others. Should we just be thankful that the developer gods blessed us with those buildings? Just because it's no longer rats and filth doesn't mean it's great. It's okay to criticize and express our opinion on it. I wonder why people get so offended by that here.

And isn't Newport filled with "renter losers"?

I remember a thread here a while back titled "God Bless the Lefraks." Pathetic.

Parkman, I'm appreciative of the work you've done for the dog run. I feel like I missed something though (maybe since I was on vacation for a while). Last I heard the dog run construction was going to begin in August (as per the sign in the park), and then early Fall. Now it's not going to start at all? Why was the public told that contstruction would begin if plans weren't final?

How much money is needed to make this happen? Has there been any sort of drive to pull the money together? I know there are a ton of dog owners in the neighborhood, myself included, who would be happy to chip in some cash to make this a reality.
