I remember at an HPNA meeting someone saying that they went to one and told him there were 2 men breaking into a car just down the block, and he ignored her.

I remember that, I went to the captain's meeting where this was raised, the East District captain at the time had the nerve to defend his officer, coming out with all kinds of nonsense about why the guy couldn't have left his post to respond to a crime in progress.

I've often wondered about this concept when I see cars parked facing the wrong way on 2 way streets. Clearly at some point they were driving on the wrong side of the road. I don't recall seeing it in JC, but there are places this is accepted culture.

At some point, several years after moving to the USA, I was surprised to be informed by friends that I would be ticketed if I parked facing against traffic.

In England there is no expectation cars will park facing with traffic, one way streets are far less common, and people park based on the direction they were driving up the road, they won't turn around to ensure they face with traffic.

Though a quick web-search shows me that in England it *is* illegal to park facing against traffic at night, the explanation being that it can be harder to see cars from the front at night as fronts of cars don't have reflectors. I have never heard of this being enforced in England however, it is universally flouted.

Nondowntown was eventually replaced by an equally prolific blowhard who is still around, sometimes I think it might be the same person, but other details differ too much.

Similarly, sometimes I think nick_riviera might be Vigilante based on his rabid anti-neighbourhood-association vitriol, but again too many differences, and Vigilante always had an element of sophistication and humour underneath his aggression.

Remember the Australian with the yellow avatar?

alb with her slightly kooky posts on anything school related.

There is "Hope House", women's refuge on Second Street between Manila and Erie, they accept things in good condition that would be useful to mothers and kids, new sheets and linens seem like they would want.

I like the way the architecture echoes aspects of the 101 Hudson tower next to it, clever by the architect. Impresseive that they have tried to do something different and interesting, unlike the majority of these new towers that slap up the cheapest brick and glass thing possible.

There is a public relations and marketing benefit to having a police station presence with associated cops and activity in the middle of a shopping and commercial area.

People like to see police around the place.

Tire = rubber exterior covering of a wheel.

Wheel = the entire assembly of wheel-rim and tire.

They stole the wheels, not the just the tires.

Caterpillars in Trees.
#17
Home away from home
Home away from home

Can anyone shed light on the plague of caterpillars that are currently covering trees downtown? Seems to be trees of all varieties impacted, my cherry tree has them, as do the plane trees, pear trees, seems indiscriminate.

The tree branches are covered in unsightly clumps of silk, with hundreds of caterpillars inside. The caterpillars that emerge from the clumps are small, white and hairy.

Anyone know what species this is, are they a new kind of moth that has infested this area? Or is this nornal, and I just haven't noticed it before?

Is it a threat to our trees? Should I cut the clumps off and kill the caterpillars? The birds don't seem to be eating them.

I have not noticed this in previous years.

Re: Recommendations- Dumpster Rental

I always used the Jersey City Incinerator Authority (JCIA), you have to go in person over to 440, the place to get the permit is next door, so you can do it all. Once you have the dumpster permit, you also need to go to the Parking Authority on Central Avenue to get no parking signs, they won't give you the signs until you have the permit in hand.

I had an idea that a government place would be cheaper than a commercial vendor, but I never actually rented from a commercial place to compare, so I may be wrong.

JCIA is now merged into Department of Public Works, hard to find information on the Jersey City website, but seems the number for dumpster rental is 201-547-2600.

The old JCIA website used to have more information including prices, the Jersey City website is dreadful, they spent money trying to make it look nicer, yet the content is extremely poor.

I remember it being something like $600 for the biggest container (30 yard), with two tons free, then you pay per ton. If you fill a 30 yard container with heavy stuff like dirt/rubble/plaster/rocks you will be way over two tons.

This building is ugly beyond belief.

Even in comparison to other cheap towers going up around town by Lefrak and the like, this building looks horrible even against that low bar.

Really the architect should be ashamed.

Edit: Architect is Hollwich Kushner (HWKN)

The Paulus Hook Neighborhood Association is even officially called "Historic Paulus Hook Association", so originally at least, historic preservation was important to them.

If they don't go to bat for this, then I can't see they have any shred of that historic mission left.

If the Historic districts mean anythng at all, surely they won't be allowed to demolish this building.

Why can't it continue to be used as a school, the purpose for which it was built?

The funny thing about these new bathroom rules is that it was city/state law that mandated (and I suspect still mandates) separate male and female bathrooms to begin with.

Restaraunts, bars, stores and establishments in general, would in most cases be only too happy to spend less space and effort maintaining one bathroom instead of two.

The overreaction to these snowfalls gets more absurd each time.

Last time, not content with closing for one day, Jersey City schools closed the second day, despite no snow falling, because "there was a risk of ice".

Astonishingly ugly! I appreciate that can be said about most of these modern towers, but your average Lefrak tower, though bad, looks nicer than this carbuncle.

Soviet style brutalist architecture, out of scale and with no redeeming qualities.

On the rear side, which you can't see in the photos, is a huge windowless wall with channels of cinder-block covered with some green siding material. I can only pray that they intend to construct some other structure to cover that part, as the way it looks now is dire.
