I heard the Embankment was closing, but then I walked past Sunday and there were people in there, but it did look a like shower or party of some kind.
I've never been to Nha Trang. It has some mixed (some good and some bad) reviews. But what's most notable is that it's BYOB. The Embankment has a GREAT bar space. When I first moved to JC a little less than 2 years ago, I went there my first Friday night and then place was hopping. It seemed after that and maybe another experience or two, the place was dead. It would be nice to have a bar area, and then also a place for decent reasonable (read: under $10) takeout (ala VB3).

What I heard from knowledgeable sources is that they were closing Newark location and transferring to Embankment location.

Is Nha Trang really moving there? Are they closing their Newark Ave location or are they just opening up another location?

Aww, that's bad news. The Tuesday special was hard to beat. Guess the location was pretty bad, and the place lacked the charm of Hamilton Inn. Oh well.

Closed except for special parties like baby showers, bridal showers, etc.
In about a month or two the place will be in the hands of the current owner of Nha Trang on Newark Ave. He will move Nha Trang (vietnamese) into the space.

I haven't heard anything to that effect. They've always been closed Mondays and at midnight during the week.

This restaurant is in desperate need of a Gordon Ramsey Kitchen Nightmares makeover.
Went there two weeks ago and besides two of the six orders being wrong the burgers were undercooked, mussels gritty, salad oily, chicken dry and nothing was fresh, special or had any sense of pride in the work. The kitchen obviously did not care on presentation, appeal or taste. Terrible. Service was inexperienced. Menus and table were dirty. The chef cannot be proud of the quality of food being brought out. The cleanliness is lacking - they must be suffering from the recession but they could pull it out of it's slump if they had pride in food and service. We will not be returning.

Meh, i think i may have posted once earlier on in this thread, but every time I've eaten there, something's been wrong. Random surprises as the poster above me mentioned (why is there a fig on my duck? it doesn't say that on the menu), poor sizes - my appetizer was much larger than my main course, sometimes out and out bad food!
Had a dinner group with relatives, the creme brule was inedible and the strawberry cheesecake had the taste and consistency of yogurt.

The Embankment has delicious food. The Apps there rule. My only slightly small problem is that Wally the chef doesn't give you a descriptive menu. I hate fennel and am allergic to white pepper. I have ordered a few dishes with surprises at the end. But overall I love it.

JC has a very good Restaurant week that starts on the 26th.
It's great for deals in the city but MUCH better here in JC....the restaurants mostly just seem to work harder at it. http://www.hudsonrestaurantweek.com/ Have a few good nights out

They have $1 Oysters on Fridays and they're great quality - very fresh and delicious! Also on Fridays is a happy hour starting at 10 - great way to start the weekend!

I've been to the Tuesday all night happy hour and it's definitely a good deal. IMO they have a better beer selection than the Hamilton Inn and when it's half off, it's very affordable. The catfish sliders were pretty good when I had them (just a little overcooked but still yummy). So was the calamari (BIG portion). The fries were good but nothing special.
But the service here could stand to be a little friendlier. The Hamilton Inn has great service in comparison. I like my bartenders to have some personality.

Their Tuesday "happy hour all night" is a good deal. Appetizers are 1/2 off, but they can be hit or miss. Usually the mussels are overcooked and they have not debearded them. Catfish sliders are good too, but the last time I had them, I think the chef put a pound of salt on them.

I've had nothing but good experiences at The Embankment. They're definitely one of the best restaurants Jersey City has to offer, with a sharp, attractive yet friendly decor, consistently excellent and innovative food, and a friendly and competent staff. Their only bad thing is the location, way on the far side of Hamilton Park. If they had Hard Grove's spot, they'd be killin it.
I also give them props for continuous efforts to expand their business with special events, wine tastings, performances and the like. I think they've got what it takes to make it for the long haul in Jersey City.

Actually, you're the newbie, fastus. Its says so right under your name. Embankment is my 2nd living room. It says so under my name. So given that you're a newbie, I'm guessing you have something positive to say. Big UP to robt regarding the nail salon. I hadn't realized they went under and had booked a bridal party there. Thanks to the mention, I've had ample time to make other arrangements.

Definitely check...it wasn't a place i ever went in (!), but i am pretty sure all 3 businesses in that space are gone now and they have signs on the door looking for deli, nail salons and dry cleaners.
Parkside Bistro is great and a very welcome addition to the 'hood. It's not a bar so i don' think of it as direct competition to Embankment and Hamilton in..and it's 2 blocks away so not immediate neighborhood or 10th street, actually. Good luck with the bridal shower!

Are you sure about the nail salon? I just booked my bridal party to get mani/pedi's there.
As for The Embankment, they're doing a lot of private parties (weddings, showers, etc) now, which it appears other neighborhood restaurants don't do. So each business has a different niche. I love The Embankment. I also really like newcomer Parkside Bistro.

My best guess is the jury is still out on whether 10th street/Hamilton Park can support 2 bar/restaurants that have Manhattan-style food and those prices.
I'd hate to see either Hamilton Inn or Embankment close but the simple fact is you can tell most of the folks that live in the larger apartment buildings in this neighborhood don't use either of these places and that really limits their market. The (indian run) grocery, nail salon and dry cleaners on this street were all "ok" and yet have closed recently.

Went there last weekend for brunch. The burger, which was delicious when they first opened, was served on a stale roll, and the meat had zero flavor. I hope all the food there hasn't taken a dive...are the short ribs still good?

The Embankment is really good but they seem to have a problem with consistency. I have gone there and it was pretty empty and the food comes out cold. It is still tasty cold so i guess that says something.
The Interior Design is lacking. The booths are a little rickety. I wonder if they had the same firm that did Ole do their design. It has the same homemade feel. It has the potential to be a really good restaurant.. it doesn't seem to get the traffic tho. I would really hate to see it go.

A group of friends and myself went to the Embankment Restaurant last night after a failed attempt to have dinner at the new Hamilton Park Inn restaurant (simply too crowded). For a group of six adults and a baby, the Embankment turned out to be a better choice, with lots of room, softer music, and good service. The food was pretty good as well. We really enjoyed our dinner and the relaxed ambiance... Kind of surprised that for a Friday night it was not crowded at all.
I ordered the endives and Arugula salad as appetizer and it really hit the spot with the sliced pears, blue cheese and chopped walnuts... highly recommend. For main course I ordered the seared scallops with risotto, very tasty as well, perfect dish size. No room for dessert though, will save it for next time. This was not our first time at the Embankment Restaurant and we'll certainly return for more dinner gatherings!

Dragon,
That depends on when you go and which side of the menu you order off of. 7 days a week 4-7, and all night on Tuesdays, the "bar" menu is 50% off. In that case, 1 dish + a beer will run you $9-$12. If you eat off the dinner side of the menu, the typical salad is $10 and the typical entree $18-$24 so your total will be $28-$30. This place is my fave. I'm having my wedding reception there next summer.
