Seeking some new netflix recommendations.

I recently enjoyed:

My Name is Khan - About a man with aspergers syndrome, very touching, funny and grandiose in a forest gump sort of way. One of the most entertaining movies I've seen in a long time.

Biutiful - 2011 nominee for best foreign language movie. Great cinematography.

Before the Devil Knows Your Dead - About brothers who plan a robbery of their parents jewelry store then everything goes wrong. Great acting by Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke and Albert Finney.

It's likely to be one of 4 issues:
1. Be patient at the start - the initial load of a movie typically involves buffering. After that, there is little load wait.
2. Your ISP's internal network or routing.
3. Your ISP's default DNS servers (which define the path taken from your home to the netflix servers).
4. Your internal home network.

2. ISP Problem and Troubleshooting

First call your ISP and ask them to run through the issue with you from their side. They might be able to help you with your config and set-up. Be patient - they have a simple script they follow. However if they can't help, you can get refunds for service they don't provide - if you hit them with that, they are more prepared to help out..

Try to figure where the break is occuring. A few tools you can use to help out.

Go to "speedtest.net" and click on "Begin Test".
Go to "pingtest.net" the click on "Begin Test".
Download the following traceroute utility. http://www.d3tr.de/download.html
Then do a trace under the \"As List\" tab and under "tools> Single Ping" to NETFLIX.COM. You should see few to none timeouts on the single ping graph, and nothing on the list showing as red (> 136 ms or so).

3. DNS Server issue (you can try this anyway, so long as you remember the steps to change back)

If there is an external problem, the only course of action is to change your DNS server settings on your router. Go to www.opendns.com and use their free version. The site will walk you through the process, but note that you need to change the settings on your router and not just your PC.

4. Internal Home Network

Go buy one of the latest Wireless lan routers. I had your problem before I went and bought one of these. PLus set up WPA2-PSK security while you are at it.

NETGEAR RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router WNDR3700 Wireless router

I have Verizon Fios and a Sony Blu Ray Player. My connection speed is 54 mbps. I tried streaming twice. I get the "Loading... Please wait" message a lot. Does anyone else get that message?

Also, I can't turn on the subtitles. There is no option for that. Can anyone get subtitles when they use a blu ray player?

Last week I watched The Proposal starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds.

Right now I am trying to watch Wallace & Gromit: A Matter of Loaf and Death. Trying...

Slapshot

1977 film comedy starring Paul Newman. It depicts a minor league hockey team that resorts to violent play to gain popularity in a declining factory town.

Best sports film ever!

I'm watching Pillars of the Earth based on recommendations here.

I read the book some time ago and thought it was one of the best books I ever read.

I'm enjoying the series; love period pieces. There's a lot of violence; not recommended for children. Great acting and settings, very realistic.

I also watched the first episode of Dexter, again very violent but strangely interesting.

I've been watching Starz's Spartacus on Netflix. I'm about half way thru the first season and I don't hate it, but the Matrix and 300 style fight scenes are growing tiresome. I'd still recommend it.

Party Down, Seasons 1 and 2 is hilarious. So sad it got cancelled.

All seven seasons of Buffy is on Netflix and the two seasons of Veronica Mars. I like to rewatch episodes now and then when I'm folding laundry and nothing is on TV.

I love the Netflix instant queue on Xbox. Recently I have been trying to conquer the first 100 movies on the IMDB top 250 list. A lot of the older movies on that list are available via streaming. Some good ones that I have seen are Apocolypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, Clockwork Orange (weird movie), the Godfather and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Yes I know most people have already seen these movies but for me the instant queue is a convenient way for me to catch up on good older movies since my childhood was mostly void of this. Soon I will be a normal citizen and wont have to lie when someone asks me if I have seen "xyz" classic movie.

I love Netflix and particularly love watching, for the most part, newly released foreign movies. My choices:

Agree re Restrepo - just saw that this week - amazing docu
Roman de Gare - French
City Island - Andy Garcia & Julianna Margulies, funny/touching
Red Riding Trilogy - might be hard to follow the accents - I struggled and I am from the UK!
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - gotta see Noomi Rapace
Weeds
Tudors
Dexter
Dirty Filthy Love - big fan of Michael Sheen - thought this was great
Flame & Citron - WWII story based on Danish resistance fighters - in Danish with Mads Mikklesen (another favourite)
Flickering Lights - Danish dark comedy
He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not - Audrey Tatou in a surprising French movie
Adams Apples - odd Danish black comedy with Mads Mikklesen again

A tonne of other too but these are the most recent ones I have seen.

Thanks for this thread, I have added so many of your suggestions! I thought I would contribute a few of my own:

Dexter (S1 and S2) - I don't have cable so I'm behind...now I'm gonna start on Weeds which everyone in my life has recommended!
Michael Jackson This is It - I'm a big fan, a go to "background" audio/visual for Saturday cleaning/organizing. :)
Man on Wire - Inspirational
The Warriors - Throwback...lots of these in my list, I like reliving the 80s on Netflix with Labyrinth, Desperately Seeking Susan, etc
The Devils Backbone - Guillermo del Toro
The Orphanage - Horror en espanol
Quilombos - Brazilian slave exile communities
Cronos - Guillermo del Toro vintage
Up - Makes me happy. :)

Enjoy!

+1 for Pillars of the Earth - I just watched that recently.

Here's another really good instant movie if you don't mind subtitles. Just don't be distracted and have a sizable box of tissues nearby if you are so inclined to weep at movies with children. This film was actually shot in Morocco using street children who were not actors - you would never know it, their performances are brilliant:

Ali Zaoua: Prince of the Streets

Ali, Kwita, Omar and Boukber are a group of urchins living on the hard streets of Casablanca, their everyday lives filled with violence, begging and indifference. To survive, the four youths create a bond of friendship and family among them, but that bond is soon cut short by a senseless tragedy. This highly acclaimed drama from Moroccan director Nabil Ayouch reminds us of the power of hope and dreams even in the harshest of circumstances.

Hey, the BBC stuff's the best surprise of netflix!

My main criticism of watching via the Wii is that the searching is only by title. They give a "selection" to browse in many categories, but it's only a fraction of the inventory.

My recent joyful TV blast from the past: Rat Patrol! Fighting Rommel from Jeeps in the Tunisian desert.

It's worth noting the show runs 25 minutes, in the 60's there was only 10 minutes of commercials per hour not 20. And they wonder why we're tuning out of watching network programming in favor of anything else.

Cool thread...my two favorites (besides mushy BBC 19th century romances):

HOUSE OF CARDS - THE TRILOGY
Set in Britain's Houses of Parliament, this political satire follows the career of a ruthless MP (Ian Richardson) whose election campaign has been plagued by a number of mysterious deaths. The politician's scheming knows no bounds, and he manages to ensnare a member of the royal family in his quest for power. This series was controversial in Britain for its close depiction of Prince Charles's actual life.

DOC MARTIN - (It will grow on you...)
Frozen by a newfound fear of blood, once-brilliant London surgeon Dr. Martin Ellingham (Martin Clunes) is forced to abandon his city practice and start anew as a small-town country doctor in the Cornish hamlet of Portwenn. As the first season of this English sitcom unfolds, Doc Martin opens his office, only to find his waiting room impossibly full. But nobody in town is really sick ? they just want to meet their new neighbor.

the dish - a comedy about how an australian observatory was used to televise the '69 moon landing. it's very well done.

that damned united - about controversial UK football manager from 60s and 70s. directed by same guy who did the king's speech. good human drama.

Nice idea for a thread. Many great suggestions already.

Exit Through the Gift Shop was really good.

Also, the original UK version of Skins was way better than the crap new MTV version.

I love this thread. Here are my recs:

The Devil's Backbone
Brilliant! Despite the gory title, it's not really gory. It's about an orphan in a boarding school in Spain during the Spanish civil war. He gets visited by a ghost and has to solve what's going on. My summary does not do this movie justice. If you liked Pan's Labyrinth you'll love Backbone (also a Guillermo del Toro film.) In Spanish w/ subtitles.

Princesas
Another brilliant one from Spain. This one is abt young prostitutes working the streets of Spain. They get upset when an immigrant Dominican prostitute starts working their turf. It's a very smart movie, touching, and comedic at times. It's very well written, no gratuitous scenes here. In Spanish w/ subs.

Romantico
Documentary abt an illegal immigrant worker from Mexico working the streets of San Fran as a mariachi singer. Regardless of your stance on illegal immigration, this is an interesting story of why this man does what he does.

Please Vote For Me is fantastic...about a elementary school class in China that hold its first class election.

Party Down is a Starz series that is on there and is pretty funny. My husband also loves the Michael Palin travel shows (like Pole to Pole, etc)

Moon is great.

Let the Right One In is the best vampire movie I've ever seen -- the original, not the American remake. Make sure you watch with subtitles, not the cheesy dubbing. I'm not sure if there's on option with the streaming.

An Education and District 9 are both streaming now. They were my two favorite movies of 2009.
