Recycling Ticket/Court Appearance
#1
Home away from home
Home away from home

I recently moved out of JC to Philly, and received a ticket for recycling being out on the wrong day. We moved in July, but our place just sold, so we were the owners at the time of the ticket. Not sure what recycling the ticket is referring to, since we weren't living in the apartment, but okay.

I was just going to pay it and move on, but it turns out I have to appear in court to even find out what the fine is. I spoke to a woman at the courthouse who suggested I send an email explaining the situation, which I did.

I can't make the court date they set, but also I really don't want to spend hours traveling back to JC to deal with this. Does anyone have experience with this kind of situation? Are the judges generally understanding of people who don't live here anymore?

Re: Gardeners in Jersey City, I have questions...

I've always used the Mother's Day rule too.

I love growing from seed, but tomatoes have always been hit or miss for me because I don't get adequate light in my apartment and do't have space for grow lights. If you do wind up needing to buy seedlings, I highly recommend Dreyer Farms in Cranford. It's a bit of a drive, but they have a huge selection and their plants perform really well.

If you're growing in the ground, you should consider getting your soil tested for lead. Rutgers provides this service: https://njaes.rutgers.edu/soiltestinglab/

Good luck with your garden!

I found both of those websites, neither of which list anyone particularly local. I was asking in case anyone had personal experience.

If anyone else is interested, there's a guy in Brooklyn with a business called Priuskings who's a hybrid specialist.

Prius/hybrid mechanic?

Hi everyone. I've got a problem with my Prius' hybrid system. The car is way out of warranty, so if possible I want to avoid taking it to the Toyota dealership.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good local mechanic who has expertise in hybrid systems? Thanks.

I vote Satis - I think you can do it for $50 a head if you try. I love Razza too, but you don't want to have to wait for an hour on a first date.
Good luck!

b, yes, I know about service dogs for invisible disabilities like epilepsy. But those are still disabilities. Like, when you apply for a gov't job, and they ask if you are disabled, the disabilities they list include epilepsy, cancer, major mental health concerns, etc. (It can comes down to the individual of course, and whether or not they consider their condition a disability.) And that service animals can perform many tasks that are invisible to the untrained eye.

Just wasn't sure where emotional support animals fall.

Bodhipooh, is it required that the person with the service animal be disabled? I thought that was where a lot of the emotional support animal fakery was coming in...it takes a special kind of person to say that they are disabled when they're not, but the line for emotional support animal seems more blurry in that regard, and thus, less obviously wrong to lie about.

For the record I know that animals provide valuable emotional support and can replace medication for some people. And I do think well trained dogs should be allowed everywhere. But until my dog utopia is manifest, I will follow the rules.

Also check with patient services at the hospital where you will have surgery. A social worker at Beth Israel set up a visiting nurse for me after my surgery, and she handled getting it approved/covered by my insurance.

Hope you're not laid up for too long.

A refresher for those of us who have mentally blocked out our Sandy experience: What were the factors that made Sandy so damaging to Jersey City?

My friends went the airbnb route this summer for their wedding, and it was really lovely. The deal was that the wedding took place on the property -- there weren't 100 walking through the house, using the bathroom, etc. They had a tent and nice porta potties.

As for nontraditional venues, I think you can do wedding ceremonies at Lucy the Margate Elephant.

I knew what you were referring to before I saw the pic. I love that mysterious thing. It's actually been around even longer than that. I remember it from before Hurricane Irene, when I tried to find the creator for an art show.

We used Morrissey's when we moved a few years ago, and they were great -- super fast and reasonably priced.

Welcome to JC!

The roof is really nice, especially on a Sunday night, since it's pretty empty. The plastic cups are meh...I don't really buy that they're not allowed to have glass...Skinner's has it on their rooftop across the street.

Are you for real with that photo, JCMan? She's a person, with a family. How would you feel if someone you knew died and you came across a picture like this?

Re: Jersey City on list of 20 Great American Cities for Writers

There's a meetup group for JC writers that has regular meetings, and there's the tiny Jersey City book festival. Art House does a poetry series.

But most of all, we have Dame's; I wrote most of my first novel there. ;)

But seriously, it's just Fulop's PR team placing JC in a desirable context. There's basically nothing. Very few local pubs to write for, minimal opportunities for local authors to read their work. The idea of any kind of grant from the city is laughable.

What do you want from your city, JC writers? Let's try to make some of it happen!

I have some computers I'd like to donate, either to an organization or a local family. One is a 2008 iMac (totally usable for internet, word processing, basic graphic stuff), and the others are older PC laptops that might of of interest to a kid who likes to practice rebuilding computers. Any ideas?

Anyone know anything about Dull Boy Bar? Their website doesn't have much. They liked a picture I tagged Jersey City on instagram...very subtle marketing!

They are opening at 364 Grove, which I think is the old Park and Sixth.

Fulop's comments:

?I think that all too often politicians assume the public is stupid, and this is an example of that,? said Fulop, a Port Authority critic whose administration in May filed a $400 million lawsuit against it alleging owed back taxes. ?The fact that you?re releasing a report in between Christmas and New Year's, the fact that there are components of it that are nothing more than a mere power grab.?

Went by tonight for dinner. Our service was not very good, but that's forgivable since they just opened.

We had a pizza and a pasta. The food was not really to my taste. It's comparable in price to Razza, but not even on the same planet. The sauce was good but the crust was kind of spongey. The pasta was okay, but pretty small for the price. i much prefer Roman Nose's.

The space is really pretty, and I could see going back for the bar only.

5/10

Something else to consider is the ever possible flood factor. Though the unit in PH is on the 2nd story, I'm curious about how badly they were hit by sandy (how long was power out, extent of flooding etc). It's something I would consider, as unfortunately it's possible to get another storm like that in the next 5 years. (Maybe I'm paranoid, but that's what I think.)

Thanks for posting that. I wasn't sure who to call in instances such as this. Do the police actually come and take them to a shelter?
