I love the Loews. For those complaining that their programming doesn't attract enough people, I would ask in all seriousness if you've been to a screening recently. There are typically a couple hundred people, not a couple dozen.
That said there is a lot more that can be done with the place. More concerts would be great.

This happened to me when I was younger. I guess it's hard for some people to understand why someone wouldn't speak up. You really can't know how you will react until you are in the situation. I was groped by a creep on the subway, and was so filled with shame that I couldn't say a word.
I find it interesting that so many commenters are demanding to know why she didn't ask for help on the train or anything like that, when so many of you immediately questioned the truth of her claim. Would you ask for help from someone if you thought they would accuse you of lying?

Has anyone tried this new spa? I'm excited to have a place in my neighborhood, but it seemed a bit pricey, at $130 for a standard facial. Is that a normal price?
There are a couple of obviously fake reviews on Yelp. When will people realize what a turn off that is??

I have also spent (way too much) time trying to figure this out. My guess is that the bistro, wine bar, and whiskey bar are one space; the speakeasy is a little separate spot, either a different room or just more intimate area of the wine/whiskey bar; the pizza place is totally separtae, in the back with the entrance that's not on the plaza (not sure the street). Maybe?

You'll have kind of a tough time finding a Catholic priest willing to do a wedding outside the church. That said, I did find one for our wedding and I adored him. He's an amazing, fascinating person...has done loads of missionary work, marched with MLK for civil rights...very cool. Here's his website: http://www.revpaulmayer.com/
Congrats!

I enjoyed MWL and will miss it. The tres leches cake is one of the best desserts I've ever had. Love the black bottoms, and the grab and go dinners were delicious. Her meatloaf is better than my mom's. Celeste is a great person and I always enjoyed chatting with her when I stopped in. Was MWL pricey? A bit, but I am happy to pay a little more to support a JC business. There may be cheaper places in the city, but who wants to schlep in just for a slice of banana bread?

I love going to psychics! So much fun. I've been to Dina on Newark Ave, and didn't like her...expensive and boring. My fave is in the city, I don't know the address but her shop is on 23rd st between 8th and 9th aves, across from the SVA theater.
There's also a place in Chinatown that does aura readings from a polaroid, which sounds pretty fun.

Is there a place online to check if someone has proper construction permits? There's a gut renovation that's been happening on our street for a while, and they have one paper that looks like it might be a permit in a second story window, but that's it. I don't want to cause trouble for them, but the house is basically being stripped down to the studs, and I worry about structural integrity, etc.

Hi fellow Jersey Citizens, please share this! We're offering hot meals, showers, etc, in our home to local cancer survivors affected by Sandy.
*** Do you know someone being treated for cancer who is without power, water, or has been displaced from his or her home because of Sandy? We are two Jersey City cancer survivors who would like to offer a hot shower, a hot meal, internet usage, or just a little R&R to local residents affected by cancer. We are located on 5th Street in downtown JC. Please call or text Emily and Matt at (908)410-1287, or email ShelterFromTheStormJC@gmail.com for more information. “What lies behind you and what lies in front of you, pales in comparison to what lies inside of you.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson *** https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos ... 68448479_2068605340_n.jpg

Tachair books is a new used bookstore on Newark Ave, near the corner of Monmouth. They will usually give you a free coffee if you donate books.
I love having any kind of bookstore downtown, so have been going to them lately with donations. Plus the hours are more convenient than the church book fair.

I have rented from the party store on newark ave a couple of times. They have the basic tables, chairs, and linens, nothing fancy. They are very nice, and the prices are good. You have to reserve in person, and there are no refunds if you cancel, only store credit.

What sort of meal would you like to serve - a full dinner? Lunch? Are all of those restrictions for one person or different people?
Most caterers are used to working around dietary restrictions, and if they can't buld the whole meal around them, will at least come up with a special plate for the person with the restrictions. Even if you're not going with a full service caterer, most restaurants can handle requests like that. If it's just one person with that many dietary needs, maybe their invitation will just, um, you know, get lost in the mail and you won't have to deal with it. ;) I remember once I had a big brunch for family, and made a huge effort to accomodate someone on Atkins, only to have them complain that they didn't like eggs...

We've lived there for nearly three years. Love the neighborhood. It is usually pretty quiet, and I have never felt unsafe coming home alone at night (though my bike was stolen from where it was locked in our garage). Some highlights of the area include the Brunswick Community Garden, Madame Claude and the Brunswick Window. Pecoraro's is also very close, yum.
I think the look of the neighborhood turns some people off, because there is for some reason always a ton of garbage in the street. Also most of the buildings have crappy old siding. But it's a very friendly and nice place to live.
