Don't know, is that the candy factory site? BTW, it is agreed that the area shall be known as "The Taint".

365-371 York Street. I got a notice in the mail about a 3-unit, 4 story building going up at that location and that the developer is asking for several variances for the project.

I haven't had a chance to stop by the planning office to view the plans in advance of the planning board meeting and was wondering if anybody had any insight as to what's going there?

The Communipaw location has been closed for several weeks.

I can confirm this. The Communipaw location hasn't been open for several weeks. Or, at the very least, it hasn't been open the various times I have driven past it. The location on Grand St (about two blocks Northeast of the Communipaw intersection) remains open and I continue to patronize them. For the price, it is a great deal. It's only five bucks for a very good exterior wash. The owner is always there, he is quick to greet customers, and you will often find him working alongside his employees. I wish they would be more thorough with the hand drying part (sometimes, water pools in some areas, like the trunk lid, and when not cleared properly, it drips down, leaving streaks on the freshly washed body of the car) but, at five dollars, this is rather minor. I always bring a shop rag (one of those super absorbing yellow rags) and complete the job (as needed) when I get back to my place.[/quote

That's why they are going out of business. Most car washes start at 12.00. How do they pay there employees with 5.00 a car ?

Sorry. You're right - I was just at the Grand location. Agree - great value.

What's going to replace the Mr. Bubbles car wash on Communipaw that was recently closed?

Residential architecture, in my opinion, is about providing a desirable place to live. What do you find desirable about this building? My first response was - geez, I hope all the people living across the court have curtains (or have great bodies and are exhibitionists). My second was what will be in the court? Noisy children? People BBQing?

I like that the building is diffent. I like the roof trail. i don't mind courtyards or noisy children who aren't that bothersome if one has the right windows and i do have curtains

Some residential development will be going up on the corner of Palisade Ave and Bowers where the fitness bootcamp is. 26-27 residential units, 16 parking spaces, and 39 bike spaces. There will also be retail space on the ground floor. Sounds like this will exacerbate an already shitty parking situation in the area.

They are open right now and have been the past week, I think they closed for vacation or maybe the shitty weather.

They were on the Two Boots owner's list of businesses that successfully lobbied for the removal of prepared food vendors and food trucks from the Grove Plaza Farmer's Market.

Guess their attempt at using government to limit competition wasn't enough to overcome internal deficiencies (price, quality, etc).

We can now cross one off Two Boots' list. Let's keep going.

They can't be putting a residential building up there facing the Holland Tunnel plaza, surely...?

It will be a Whole Foods and a Wegman's

Fantastic, but I'm sure people would complain about the lack of car space. I would love to see some creative buildings, that increase green space. Concrete parking decks are so post-cold-war looking.

Not sure if this has been mentioned or not, but I saw today that the BLue moon (on Montgomery, in the Gotham building, close to St Peter's prep) is being gutted inside.

Anyone know what's going on, or what's coming?

On another note, anyone know what's going on with the old food co-op / Goods & Greens in the Silverman building facing Hamilton Park? It's on the corner of the same block as Milk Sugar Love and GP's. Originally it seemed like it was on its way to becoming the new home of a photography photo, but that "coming soon" sign is gone and I haven't seen any construction. It's a really nice space, would love to see it put to good use for the neighborhood...

Looks like the Jersey City Art School is opening a location there...

Looks like the Art School was moving in there last night. A ton of easels set up and some paper signs on the windows.

Is this permanent or is it another pop-up similar to how Kannibal took over the space for a few weeks before Christmas?

Nonsense. Everybody (except for midwesterns, apparently) knows that Texas BBQ (smoked, dry rub) is much, much better than KC style. Second best: North Carolina BBQ, with that awesome vinegar based sauce.

Memphis BBQ, or why bother?

Memphis style for pork ribs, absolutely, but central Texas style brisket is famous for good reason, and the Carolinas own pork shoulder.

I like to see a good Yankee barbecue joint work with all three of those styles since we have no regional barbecue pride at stake.

OK, OK. I will concede that Memphis BBQ is very good. I still find Texas BBQ to be the absolute best expression of the genre. The purity of a simple dry rub, smoked for 12 to 24 hours, is perfect. I have never understood why some people would prefer that sweet, thick brown sauce of the KC-style BBQ. There is a great place in Memphis that makes the traditional Memphis-style pork ribs, served with a NC-style red, vinegar sauce and it is like dying and going to BBQ heaven.

The closest thing I have had in the area to what I consider true BBQ, is the Dinosaur outpost in Harlem. The one in Newark is OK. I would KILL for an honest-to-goodness, stick-to-your-ribs BBQ joint in JC.
