Wow! We just went there for a Sat lunch - that's got to be the most boring chicken I've ever had in my life ! It's kind of hard to believe anyone would bother making a business selling such flavorless food - I mean, what the hell's the point? I wouldn't describe Atomic Wings as the greatest or anything, but at least if tasted like something. Seriously, you'd be better off going to almost any diner... and it'd probably be a lot cheaper as well.

PS:

BonChon isn't the only place in JC that serves frozen or reheated chicken. In fact I've never eaten in any JC place that cooks fresh chicken. They all suck big.

Hey - JC restaurants out there - prove me wrong!

I went there today.

1. Their chicken is either frozen or recooked. It just tastes dry, overcooked and seriously bad. Absence of any fresh chicken.
2. They manually doubled the price of drumstricks vs wings - didn't even bother to create new menus- they just overwrote the old menu in red ink.
3. The drumsticks and wings tasted like a dry chicken corndog.
4. Price was outrageous.

Seriously - order a set of wings from Dominos pizza, compare them to these sucky/dry/tastless corndogs???

Bon Chon? Nothing Bon, IMO.

I'm shocked by these prices. I will stick to eating lunch or dinner at Sava Polish Restaurant on Grove St. right near PostNet. For $8 you get substantial portions of fresh homemade food!

Go to Morsella Cupo on Summit Ave near 5 Corners or Rizzo on Central across from Pershing Field Park. For 7 to 8 bucks you will get a meal for lunch and not feel famished.

Be careful what you touch after eating the chicken strips.

I'll stick with Lucky's when I have a wing craving. It's like $5 for 4 whole wings and a heap of fried rice or starchy stuff of your choosing like tostones or fries. And it's fast. But I get their terrific rotisserie chicken more often. 1/2 chix + side & salad:$5.75!

Who gives them the idea that people will frequently eat at a fast food joint paying $7.48 for 6 chicken wings and drinks not included? It's too pricey for 6 chicken wings and it's too pricey for fast food appetizer. They need a reality check.

Last time I had Bon Chon was a month ago (Fort Lee location) and I told my wife I wouldn't go there again until next year the earliest. To some ppl I guess it's worth it, but I'll take my $ somewhere else to fill up my tummy.

Is that for whole wings or a "piece" like the Buffalo places?

I ducked into the Bon Chon on 5th Ave & 33rd last week, and quickly ducked out. The prices were beyond what I would consider for a regular lunch. It sounds like our local one is no cheaper. You can get a great meal Downtown for $6-7, sometimes including a drink. Places like this and It's Greek to Me are simply not hitting the sweet spot.

Preach on! Seriously there is no "meal" at a chicken place? Its also insanely slow. I liked the wings, but its too expensive. I mean i understand the Fort Lee market loving it as A. the Korean population and B. the average income in Fort Lee is way higher then Jersey City. This place will burn out because of its costs after it looses that shiny new smell.

Fried chicken, Korean style, comes to Jersey City

Published: Thursday, October 21, 2010, 9:15 AM

Amy Sara Clark/The Jersey Journal Amy Sara Clark/The Jersey Journal

While Jersey Cityites are still mourning the death of Atomic Wings, the Jersey City restaurant that closed in August, some have welcomed the eatery's replacement, BonChon Chicken, with open arms (and mouths).

The Korean franchise, located at 172 Newark Ave., opened October 1st, and owner Harold Kim, said business is surprisingly good.

He expected to get about 100 customers a day, he said, but instead he's been getting between 150 and 200 a day, he said.

Resized Image

Kim, 60, decided to open the store in Jersey City after realizing that many of the customers at his Fort Lee store were driving up from Jersey City for the chicken.

"People say they're addicted," said store spokeswoman Soie Ju.

Understandable.

While the menu is primarily fried chicken wings, drumsticks (you get to choose which, unlike most wing places) or chicken breast strips, the difference is the flavoring -- and the crunch.

The "hot and spicy" and "soy garlic" sauces come from Korea, said Kim, and the exact ingredients are a company secret.

"I don't even know what's in it," he said, chuckling.

The crunch comes from frying the cage-free chicken twice, with a 10-minute pause in between to let the oil drain off. That allows for the extra crunch while keeping the inside moist, said Ju.

The spare menu also includes such offerings as dumplings, Caesar or Asian Chicken Salad, a Korean Barbecue wrap and kimchee coleslaw.

Ju said that while about a third of the clientele in Fort Lee is Asian, only about 5 percent is in Jersey City.

The Jersey City store is BonChon's 14th location in the United States. Besides the Fort Lee store, there are also four restaurnats in Manhattan as well as stores in Northvale, Leonia, Bayside, Queens, Staten Island, Cambridge, Mass., Annandale, Vir., Los Angeles and Nanuet, N.Y., Ju said.

The franchise was started eight years in South Korea, where there are now 25 locations. It came to the United States in 2006.

Kim, who lives in Englewood Cliffs, has owned the Fort Lee store for four years. Before that he had a business importing Korean wine, he said.

BonChon Chicken, 172 Newark Ave., (201) 985-1212, is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Delivery is available to downtown Jersey City, Journal Square, Newport and Hoboken with a $15 minimum.

Just wanted to let you all know that I was just in Bon Chon ordering wings and as I'm paying for my food I see into the kitchen and there is a big tray of cooked chicken just sitting there on the floor, with the cooks walking around it as if it wasn't there. I pointed it out to the manager and she said "Oh they are just transporting it" I said that maybe I would call the health department or post about it online and she said "You need to relax". Now this chicken may taste good, and they may have fancy branding but the bottom line is that this is just another dirty take out place...one that is overpriced. Before everyone keeps hyping this place up they should take a look at what is going on in the kitchen.

I tried the mixed combo of breast and drumsticks. Went in with great expectations and left with mild enthusiasm. The drumsticks were good but not great the breast tasted chewy and not moist. Hopefully it's not standard. Would like to go back and give it a retry. Definitely not Popeye's but better than Atomic Wings.

That's a new one to me - I was more specifically referring to the Office of Construction Code, which does answer the phone as "Buildings Department" and I am certain that Raymond Meyer is a Healy appointee. Furthermore, their website indicates that they are "empowered by the Jersey City municipal code" to administer both state and city regulations. That sounds like a city agency to me.

It's not so much the roadblocks the agency puts up as it is the way it is run that pisses me off. I understand the need for fire and safety regulations and enforcing them.

When I went through the process of getting a building permit for a relatively insignificant project (back porch), there were three phone numbers to call that office: one that was always busy, one that always rang and never got answered and one that went straight into voicemail and never got messages returned. Only recently has their phone system been upgraded somewhat. Furthermore, when I submitted an application for a permit, there was no definitive list of items I had to give them and they don't tell you that you have to go to the zoning office or the multiple inspections a project has to have. I don't have a problem with these requirements, but why can't it be written down somewhere? I could go on some more but I've told this story many times. They are a joke.

their chicken and their dumplings are amazingly crisp, yet light, unlike some other places out there with fried dishes that come out a soggy greasy mess. owners seem like nice people, too!

All I wanted to do was try Bon Chon last night. I got there at 9:20pm and it was closed. The hours posted on the door and on the menu says they are open till 10pm.

That make me so mad!

Had both the Spicy and the Soy wings, both are excellent - really crispy wings, incredibly yummy, although at $19.99 for 20 pieces, they're not cheap. Definitely worth it.

I wouldn't have it delivered esp. it's starting to get cold, the delivery guy is on a bicycle without any protective carrying device on it.

We should suggest that they make some tofu (with the same flavoring and seasonings as the chicken). Why not?

Bon Chon had some veggie choices too. They had vegetable dumplings, some salads, and side dishes. I want to try the dumplings on my next visit.

Ordered from there last night expecting it to take a really long time and ended up being about 40 minutes which is fine by me. While it wasn't ice cold, it wasn't piping hot either. It sure was tasty though, will definitely be ordering from there again.
