Well, the budget cuts are only going to cut deeper going forward. Perhaps the police should cut their salaries and pensions so more of them can stay on the force. I can see a police officer watching a mugging and refusing to help because of "budget cuts."

To all of you with smartphones. Before talking to JCPD, or any law enforcement for that matter, switch on your voice recorders. Droid and Iphone have apps for that.
Note Everything for example on droid might work well.

Generally transportation police have a better disposition then beat cops. It's funny they have more money in the budget for parking authority officers and equipment than police security. Maybe the parking authority budget stretches further than the police budget. Hey that's the answer pay enforcement a small salary so they will become cranky and want to reek havoc on those that deserve it in their jurisdiction.

Speaking of unfriendly police officers....
Last night, we had an incident walking home from Ninth and Coles Tavern. My sister in law was jumped. The woman who jumped her did not take her purse or money, just wanted to hurt someone. This took place on 7th and Jersey which is one block from the East District Police Station. We went to the police station, and the cops basically implied that it was our fault because we went out drinking. They also told us, when we asked why there aren't more patrol cars out on Mischief Night, that it's because of budget cuts.

I've met several and they all were friendly. They are nice to motorcyclists (sane ones at least) and generally more polite less entitled seeming compared to Hoboken fat piggies.

Has anyone ever met a Jersey City police officer that was friendly? Seriously.
I am still surprised when I see PATH police officers being polite to people. Being from Jersey City, I now expect all police officers to be confrontational and argumentative.

Well this may be one victory for the good guys, I'll save the details but a friend was staying with me this past weekend and had his car stolen off of Morgan St btw Provost and Warren between the hours of 10:30am and Noon on Saturday. So there are plenty of others still to be caught.
Again, I'll spare you the details but while dealing with some unfriendly police officers I suggested they step up patrol in my area because my vehicle had been stolen twice within the past 18 months. The response I got was to start a neighborhood watch, budget cuts does not allow them to patrol everywhere as much as they should. And before anyone feels the need to comment about my ability to secure a vehicle, the first vehicle had an alarm with keyless entry, second time I had installed an alarm with ignition cut off and used a club. I cannot speak for my friend who did not have an alarm on his vehicle. So if anyone parks in this area, I'd be careful.

Happy to hear that they caught the vandals. My car window was smashed Monday night! There was nothing to take, so too bad for the criminals. I just went past where it was parked and saw another car still there with the window broken.
I moved to Jersey City a year ago and I'm already tired of the tire slashing and window smashing. Crime seems to be picking up in downtown and not worth sacrificing safety and putting up with the aggravation. JC Police are clearly not doing enough. Things won't change until the people demand it and the politicians around here are taking the job for the right reasons - to serve the public.

For those who have had stuff stolen from their vehicles in the downtown area (myself included), a victory for the good guys....
At about 4 AM this morning, I was awoken by some noise oustide near 5th and Coles. An officer in an unmarked vehicle, had spotted some perps going into cars while driving around the neighborhood. The suspects, 3 males and one female driver, were arrested after at least 3 GPS devices and other stuff were found in the vehicle with no explananation besides "that's her GPS..and so is that one." The cops looked into the devices and saw the "Home" addresses programmed in didnt match up, and called them out. This is the second such stop I've seen in front of my apartment in the last 2 months, although the first time, they did not find anything in their possession and could not make the arrest. I watched most of the arrest go down from my window, and have to say, the undercover who took these guys down did an outstanding job. So kudos to JCPD.

I used to live in the Bronx and had my car windows smashed no less than 7 times. Once they stole a gallon of milk, draino and some mix tapes during the 5 minutes I was away from the car.
The important thing to remember about leaving absolutely nothing in your car is that many of the car thieves are not criminal masterminds using logic. Many of them are drug addicts and people in desperate circumstances willing to take the risk of getting caught stealing for the loose change under your floor mats. Make sure that you take *everything* out of your car when you park it including gum wrappers (which if shiny look like change in the dark), papers, and empty soda cans (worth a nickel across the river in NY). We have a bit of a beater which lessens the temptation and we have a radio that gets taken into our house when we leave the car. Basically we make it as unattractive as possible. Sorry to all of the posters who have had their cars damaged. I second the recommendation of Bob's Auto Glass. Very reasonable prices and quick service.

I have to say that walking down Sussex toward Warren on several occasions at night I see many cars with electronics out in the open or even cars with shopping bags and boxes on their back seats. That draws attention - best to just lock it all up in the trunk so they think nothing is in the car.
Two of the cars got broken windows the next morning. Seems to happen often on Sussex but very very late at night.

I don't have a car but I do have a spacious driveway next to my house, so I let one of my neighbors park his car there - a couple of weeks ago someone actually came up the driveway at 6:15 on a Sat morning and smashed his passenger side window. I was up and heard the noise but by the time I got to the window the smasher had run away. Note my driveway is not one of the short ones right in front of the house, it is full length (3 cars) and runs alongside my house. There was clearly nothing in the car and he leaves the glove box open to show that there is nothing worth taking there. Moral of the story is it really doesn't seem to matter, crackheads be crackheads and if they think they see an opportunity they will take it even if it makes no sense to a rational person. But it really creeped me out that they actually came off the street and up the driveway. Even on your own property it seems your vehicle is not safe.

Warren Street runs parallel to Provost; do you mean between Bay and Morgan Street?
No street lights on that block - park at your own risk.

Just reporting a car break in at 1st and Merseles. They took a GPS. Perhaps it was the Spectra pipeline people that committed the crime.

So what are the cops doing? It should be easy enough to catch these guys with some Honeypots. Have decoy cars with mounting brackets in some select spots. Have surveillance on it and some plainclothes cops in unmarked cars a block or two away ready to move on it.

Another broken car window. On Barrow St between Wayne and Christopher Columbus. Nothing was taken. Seems like a random act of vandalism.

my car got broken into last year but up by journal square...they went into the glove box and moved on. i had nothing of value and i have still never owned a gps. $165 window, and still no pearl.
the only problem with my car is that if i leave the glove box open overnight, the battery drains from the lights.

According to the cop we filed our report with, there has been a huge increase in these incidents, but only in the "East District" and that GPS's "are like candy". I guess it makes sense, go to where the money is... Oh! And I'd recommend Bob's Auto Glass on Communipaw if anyone finds themselves in the same situation. They were very helpful & fixed the car right away (new window, vacuumed up the mess, everything...). Apparently they get several of these instances a day? All these hoodlums are keeping the auto glass shops in business...
