Re: Your favorite grocery shop?

I love P&K. Great prices and surprising variety given the size. For any items I can't get at P&K (like meat or seafood)...I'd rather go to Shoprite than KeyFoods which just doesn't do it for me. I'd go there in a pinch, but I'd rather buy meat at Shoprite where there is greater variety and greater turnover.

Internet options for downtown JC?
#2

Any suggestions for Internet service that can beat these rates from Comcast?

Basic cable TV, $15
Xfinity Internet (20 Mbps), $54

These figures are before taxes. I'm just wondering/hoping there might be a less expensive alternative....or perhaps I'll learn that this is standard. I do have the option of downgrading to 3 Mbps for $20, but I worry that may feel too slow. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I stopped in this week. It took 30 mins to fill my order, but that's actually not why I'm writing here. Like most have posted here already, it was pretty chaotic. The place is small, and it doesn't seem well ventilated. One employee thought it was a good idea to operate an industrial size vaccuum while I was there. Another employee swept the floor and then emptied the dust pan in a garbage can directly next to a counter where food was being prepped.

One employee (could be the owner) stepped outside to smoke. By outside I mean the doorway, meaning the smoke drifted into the small restaurant.

Most alarmingly and why I've decided to write this is that there was a baby crawling on the floor of the kitchen area. The negligence and danger should be obvious. (As an aside, if a restaurant can afford 10 employees working at the same time, it should be able to afford a babysitter.)

This place is a disaster. I'm worried about the child.

Another broken car window. On Barrow St between Wayne and Christopher Columbus. Nothing was taken. Seems like a random act of vandalism.

I requested pricing through the website about a week ago. Never heard back. If someone has gotten pricing info, would appreciate if you could post (either here or via PM).

For what it's worth, I have seen evidence of smashed windows in three separate places on Columbus between Grove & Jersey in the past two weeks.

While business owners are vested partners, I don't consider it their responsibilities to ensure safety or prevent theft. Actually, I think the biggest deterant is foot traffic and having businesses that stay open late. That's why it is so unfortunate that this happened right outside this awesome business- and to a patron no less.

It's so rare that I see a police presence downtown. That would help.

If you like the food here, I highly recommend the communal dinner. The food was delicious, and the music really adds a lot too!

I don't know the organizers, but I have to imagine if you're interested in helping, you can just show up. They'd be silly to turn away more help.

JCDT,

Thank you for bringing this up. I also heard jack hammers at around 3am and didn't know what number to call. I've also heard jack hammers around 11pm, which isn't as egregious, but probably is not allowed either.

If someone can point us in the right direction, I'd be happy to make a call regarding the same issue.

Yes, they were/are there. I finally got the sandwich I was craving. Yum! Today, they were in the plaza - across from McDonalds.

I thought this cart was going to be outside the Grove St PATH Tues - Sun. I went looking to buy a sandwich earlier and they weren't there.

Considering I'd expect to pay about $7 for a similar sandwich from a storefront, $7 from a cart does seem high. I agree with that point. But I also think what they offer is a lot better than what other carts offer. I really enjoy their sandwiches, and will continue to pay $7 for them regardless if they come from a cart or from behind a counter.

As a woman who is frequently harassed by the men who loiter my JC neighborhood (which I love despite said harassment/loitering)...I just want to add that the two men operating the cart when I have been there have been very respectful to me and to other female customers I've seen them interact with. That's been my experience.

Does anyone know of any Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) groups in or around Jersey City?

I've read good things about this one on here: http://www.downtownharvest.org/index.html

Registration for 2009 is closed though. Does anyone know of any other similar options?
