Hmmm, maybe it's one of these "spotters" that also got my GPS as the wife and I were taking turns going to and from our 1st floor apt. to the car (http://jclist.com/modules/newbb/viewt ... p?topic_id=27208&forum=10). I say that only because they also took a box cutter from the emergency roadside kit in the backseat, so they may be in the mail theft business, too.

I don't remember, honestly. If I leave the car for an extended period of time, I always lock up. My wife was going in and out, too. And eventually one of us took it to find a parking spot. Between the bags, the screaming kids, etc, was it possible that the car was left unlocked for five minutes? Yes. It's just that I know I had it earlier that day (6/2), and just realized it wasn't in the glovebox today.

That's why I wonder if I hadn't misplaced the damn thing somewhere. But I tore the car apart looking for it, and it's not in the house, as far as I can tell. I don't see any telltale signs of entry, either. It's weird.

Paulus Hook - Stolen GPS

It was a Garmin Nuvi 1450.

Yeah, I know, I know. Woulda, shoulda, coulda brought the GPS inside, but it was in my glovebox. There was no visible evidence that I had one (visible cords, suction cup rings). I also have no idea how they entered the car (no broken windows, etc.). My only thought is that someone must have run up while I was taking multiple trips to-and-from my double-parked car while unloading it in front of my house from a weekend trip. Hell, it could simply be misplaced, but I doubt it (I'll retract this message if that ends up to be true).

It appears the thief had rustled through my emergency roadside kit and took the box cutter, as well.

Is the construction project in question the one at Van Vorst and Morris?

Does anyone know how long they're going to tie up Van Vorst St. with their "no parking" permit signs they've had up since around Thanksgiving?

Got another call today from a rep who detected fraudulent activity and froze my account before anything could happen. She told me to come into a Chase branch tomorrow and transfer my money into new accounts.

This is just going to keep happening around here, I suppose.

Slightly off topic but I live at that location and I've been told
i cant get a parking permit because of my address.

Cars in my building cannot park on the street.

has anyone else experinced this ?
=================================

From what I understand, if you live somewhere with dedicated parking, you can't get a parking permit. I heard of someone who lives at Dixon Mills, and parking in the lot there is expensive. So they tried to get a parking permit for their zone.

The lady looked up their address and said, "You're in Dixon Mills. You can't get a permit. Park in their lot."

I guess they don't want people who live somewhere with dedicated lots/garages taking up street spots needed by those who don't have them.

Smoke was coming out of Christopher Street. I was at 9th Street, waiting for a JSQ train. There was a Hoboken train just sitting on the track. Then they shut the lights off to the train and made an announcement over the PA that there was too much smoke at Christopher Street, and it was supposedly bad enough that they were kicking us out of the 9th Street station.

So I hopped a cab to WTC. When I got there, I got on a JSQ train. After a minute of sitting, the doors close like we were ready to go. Then they open the doors again and tell us that this train was now out of service. Huh? They directed us to the train across the platform, which was shut down. They started it up and ran it. Weird.

20 Reasons to Keep Your Cat Indoors

This list was developed over a lifetime of experiences with many, many cats. Each and every item on this list happens every day. The best policy is to keep your cat inside
Cars - Thousands of cats get hit by cars every year. If they are lucky, they die instantly.
Car engines - Cats seek warmth. In the winter they tend to climb up inside car engines where they can be subsequently ground up.
Anti-freeze - Cats like the sweet taste of anti-freeze, and they will lick it if able. Anti-freeze is extremely toxic and your cat will die a painful death within hours of ingesting it. It can take less than a teaspoon to kill a full-size cat or dog!
Poisoning - There are people who don't like cats and will set out poison on their property. Others may put poison out to get rid of other wildlife that wanders onto their property and your cat may accidentally ingest it.
Fighting - Your cat could be killed by dogs, raccoons, or other wildlife. Some people train their dogs to attack and kill cats.
Fighting Part II - Believe it or not, cats can kill each other during their fights.
FELV - Feline Leukemia destroys a cat's immune system. It is transmitted through body fluids. Even a sneeze can pass the virus from one cat to another. The vaccine for FELV is only 70 to 75% effective. Cats infected usually die within two years.
FIV - Feline Immunosuppressive Virus also destroys a cat's immune system. It is transmitted through body fluids and cuts a cat's lifespan in half. There is no vaccination for FIV.
FIP - Feline Infectious Peritonitis. FIP is always 100% fatal. Tests and vaccines for FIP are not reliable.
Animal Abuse - Cats are often shot with BB guns; burned with lighters, firecrackers; tortured by people causing loss of limbs, eyes, etc.
Starving to Death - People think that because they have lived in the same house for a number of years that their cat is too smart to wander off and get lost. NOT TRUE. People also think that because their cat has never left the front yard that it go any farther. NOT TRUE.
Getting Trapped - Your cat could get lost in somebody else's garage or utility shed. He could suffer brain damage if trapped in extreme heat or could suffer frostbite if trapped in extreme cold.
Research Labs - Your cat could get stolen and sold to a research lab. This practice does go on.
Parasitic Infections - Your cat could eat something (rat, mouse, bird) and die of a parasitic infection
SPCA - Your cat could get taken in by someone thinking it is a stray. They might keep your cat or take it to the SPCA where it may be euthanized.
Unintentional Poisoning - By pesticides, lawn products, etc.
Fleas, ticks, worms, ringworm - Your cat could transmit these to other pets and people in the household.
Drowning - Your cat could accidentally fall in a swimming pool and drown.
Spraying - When cats go outside they smell other cats' territorial markings. This may prompt your cat to start spraying inside the house to mark his territory.

Under "unintentional poisoning," don't forget rock salt. We saw it everywhere this winter, and any animal licking its salt-encrusted paws after coming inside will die. We have a toddler, and I was especially careful to take off boots just inside the front door as to not track the rock salt inside, run the dustbuster over the mat by the door periodically, etc.

Yup, we submitted a claim with Chase and it was a relatively quick process to get the money back in our account. It's just so frustrating to feel violated like that. It's even more frustrating that they won't 'fess up to their mistake for the sake of covering their butts legally (and to not scare branch members out of pulling their cash).

Downtown: Debit Card Fraud at Chase Bank
#13
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

So, last week the wife and I are on vacation in New England. We bank at the Chase branch at 50 Columbus and I get email alerts to my phone when there's bank account activity. While we were together, I began getting alerts about successive, rapid ATM withdrawls. Knowing something is wrong, since neither of us were currently tapping an ATM from INSIDE OUR HOTEL ROOM, I call up Chase right away and the service rep concludes that my wife's debit card got duplicated (the ATM transactions are happening in Paris).

So the card got cancelled and we submitted a claim and got the money returned to our account (by the time we shut it down, they made off with about $940). She uses the debit card for a fair amount of purchases, so we thought this could have happened anywhere and we'll never know where it got ripped.

So, back in town, my wife is relaying this story to a friend outside of Tommy Two Scoops on York St. Some guy standing outside, who seemed nice (and was friends with Tommy--I'm guessing he's one of the firefighters or JCPD that's always hanging around there) overheard her talking about the theft and said "You bank at Chase on Columbus, right?" When my wife said yes, he began telling her how someone messed with the card reader at the teller's window (not the ATM mind you) so that it would capture your card info (and PIN number that you entered in the keypad) and send them to someone's computer, who began making fake cards. They realized something was wrong within a couple hours and fixed their system. This apparently happened a couple months ago there and for whatever reason, he asked her not to spread this info around (of course, I'm relaying it to you because people need to know).

So my wife went to Chase yesterday to inquire about it. The manager pushed her off on one of the tellers (great customer skills, guy). The teller, I suppose, is towing the company line by not admitting responsibility. She said they thought it happened at the Duane Reade at Grove St. My wife countered that the theft couldn't have happened there because she never tapped there. This created cognitive dissonance with the teller who just began a circular conversation insisting that the theft likely happened at D.R.

Anyway, be careful out there.

So what are the cops doing? It should be easy enough to catch these guys with some Honeypots. Have decoy cars with mounting brackets in some select spots. Have surveillance on it and some plainclothes cops in unmarked cars a block or two away ready to move on it.

Vehicle State Inspection

Hello,

I live in Paulus Hook and was wondering where downtown residents take their cars for state inspection. When I first moved here, I used a shop down around 6th and Newark, I think. That's a significant walk after dropping off/picking up, though. I called Sears Auto Center and Pep Boys down by the mall and neither do it. Thanks in advance for suggestions.

True. In all honesty, it's not the first time I saw someone going through the trash. Last time, which was less than a year ago, the cans were actually out on the curb. I remember being fascinated by it, because once again, he wasn't a homeless guy looking for bottles.

Saturday night, my visiting mother-in-law caught a guy rooting through our trash. He didn't look like a homeless guy looking for bottles--he looked like an everyday dude. The trash cans weren't even by the curb, but way inside the front gate of the house. She said that when he saw her, he just stopped what he was doing and quickly exited the property.

I take great care to shred everything I throw away with personal info. I warned one of my neighbors about what happened, but I thought it would be good to pass this your way as well. Anyone else seen this happening?

Whereabouts: near Sussex and Warren.

-A day care center of comparable quality to the River School with competitive pricing (River's tuition is nuts).

-A gentrified pediatrician. Most of the doctors in JC seem to have gotten their degrees from the Philippines.

-An independent record store.

Parking regulation question: Essex St.

Hi,

Does anyone know what the parking regulation is on the one side of Essex that you may park on between Warren and Van Vorst? The sign that should have the street sweeping schedule is blank, as well as the zone permit sign. I noticed most cars on the block had a zone 3 tag, as do I, but I don't know if/when the alternate side regulation is.

Any help would be appreciated.

Let's not forget that anyone that moves to JC with a vehicle is a huge source of revenue for the city. So, several people a year buying the temporary parking pass until they've taken a day off to visit the DMV, then the permanent pass, then renewing each year to the tune of $15 a pop is a cash cow. Plus, most new people get nailed with a boot and ticket at least once, I would assume.

^ It's understandable why he kept going, but that doesn't excuse the behavior. If you're drunk, take the bus home. Also, we don't know if this was drunk-driving related in the first place--it's just a speculative guess--and if not there is no excuse not to leave your info under the wiper. It all boils down to common decency. It will cost me a hefty chunk of change because of someone else's carelessness and lack of conscience.

Hit and Run on Warren.

I parked my car last Monday night, 11/19, on Warren between Essex and Morris. On Wednesday night, I went to retrieve the car, only to find the side of the bumper facing the road smashed in. No note; no anything. This wasn't a ding from parallel parking at 4 mph. Someone driving down the road did this (and no, I wasn't sticking out).

Anyway, I just wanted to warn everyone that parks around my area that there's a hit-and-run-happy driver out there. It's just amazing that he could do that kind of damage and keep going. My guess is that he was probably drunk and didn't want to get in even more trouble.
