We also mailed our form in a couple of weeks ago but had a census worker stop by last night and fill out the form again. Wonder how much $ is wasted by this double coverage?

I have them knock on my door last night and take another census. I say another because I actually mailed mine in. Go figure.

The Census is a multiple-phase affair. The first phase that involves the citizenry is the mailing of Census forms to every US household. Of course, many households are missed, as already documented in this thread. The next phase, which starts tomorrow (May 1st) is the mobilization of a large "brigade" of paid census takers that will visit households that failed to return their Census form. Later on, some of the census takers will be tasked with visiting certain households (randomly selected by the Census Bureau) to verify the data submitted via the Census form. As I understand it, some census takers are also tasked with canvassing entire neighborhoods to look for households that may have been missed during the initial phase of the Census.

Is it me or Does the Census work on sheer stupidity?! I got a note on my building door last thursday....if the deadline was April 16, then why did they come a week later?

Census Day, which is the date of the deadline for filling out and mailing your Census form, was April 16.

If you haven't received your forms by now, you will not be counted based on a mailing. Your best bet is to inform the Census Bureau so your building, or home, is added to the list of places that needs to be visited by a volunteer during the next phase.

I have a friend who works fairly high up for the census and it turns out they use three different vendors for mailings, one for the pre-mailing, one for the forms and one for the follow-up.

I let them know about all the buildings being missed, not sure if that is the reason everything finally showed up or not, but they weren't happy to hear about it.

Would have been nice if the reporter called the census for comment as my impression was this was the first they had heard about it.

From what I hear, you are supposed to write "DUPLICATE" on it and send it back.

No, No, No.

The insert in the second mailing clearly states:

"It is important that each household respond only once. If you have already provided your census information, we thank you - there is no need to provide it again."

I called the census bureau when I received the second questionnaire on 4/1. They told me to disregard the second mailing if I had already responded.

It hat lovely "YOUR RESONSE IS REQUIRED BY LAW" in big bold letters. But I already responded two weeks ago.

You'd think after hundreds of years as a republic, doing this every ten years, there would finally be a system in place that works.

I smell SNAFU.

I too got a second form after submitting the first. I ripped up the 2nd form.

I also smell FUBAR

You can call the Census hotline on or after April 12 to request a new form, but I received a call from the local Census office today saying they will be releasing information this afternoon on how residents can get forms before that. I'll report back as soon as I hear from them.

Here's a link to today's Jersey Journal story that has some other information:

This may sound simple but with all the hype etc. from months ago about wanting to be first in the 2010 count would it not have been prudent for Healy to meet with census people with a list of all the new buildings to insure a proper count? Particularly since 2000 was short by a lot. A whole decade in between and everyone is watching the accident but no one is calling EMS. Que??

Got ours (Powerhouse Arts District) filled it out, mailed it back next day, got SEVERAL reminders, SEVERAL flyers letting the public know they are hiring and then yesterday got another census form. Sweet! So if we fill it out again does J.C. get bonus points?

So what options does JC have for recourse if the census forms did not get to a large portion of residents?

I spoke to a number of people in grove pt (downtown at 100 Columbus Dr- 400+ apartments in the building) including a doorman and we have not received any census forms.

It seems silly for everyone to have to go to the library to get a form. how can we have them mail everyone in the building forms?

I'm not sure about the post office, but I understand the main branch of the Jersey City Library on Jersey Avenue has forms in a rack on the second floor.

I was at the Newark post office yesterday and asked if they had census forms and was told no. (Maybe they were just out and they do actually carry them, I failed to follow up.) The library on Jersey Avenue has them on the second floor. I picked mine up yesterday.
