ONLY went there once to order a take out. Sat at the bar waiting forever, placed order with the bartender as there was no front desk person. After that, all the employees instantly started staring at their smart phones. After a while, a bag of food was put on the front desk. When I asked if it was mine I got an "I don't know". I flagged down a waiter and he said he would "go check", but he also was busy on his phone. After several minutes the bartender said "oh, i guess that is your food". I said "It's been sitting there forever, it's ice cold by now"...you can guess the rest..never went back.

Agree with you on the interior 100000%. It's kinda like that pasta place on jersey ave that's byob. Please, restaurateurs, you may be artsy and creative, but either be friends with or hire an interior designer! *I'm not an interior designer.

It comes down to how well a restaurant is run and fits the needs of the area. Look at Madame Claude and the new place Cellar 335.You can tell they will both do well.Good food and drinks, ambiance and decent prices. Also having a good bar scene helps and encourages people who are by themselves to still go to these place. UR never had that feel.

I'm not mad at this. I never loved them. I wish they made another MAE instead.

Thank you for taking a huge leap of faith, taking a risk and opening a restaurant in JC. This restaurant wasn't a love at a first trial for us but over the years, it got better and better.

We enjoyed many weekend brunches and dinners with our friends and family. The staffs were always helpful and brought the kid's Ramen as soon as our daughter sat down.

We loved all the staffs, especially Chris who is now a dearest friend.

We will be there to bid farewell Sat. night and eat one last delicious meal.
You will be missed!

Do you know anything more about new place? Also do you know what the monthly rent is now?

The ongoing influx of population should ultimately help Jersey City restaurants...

I think for many restaurants in the Jersey City of today, the quality is there, the concept is there...but if only ONE thing is slightly off (not GREAT or consistent service, or location a tad bit off the beaten path) there is a decent chance of failure.

There is not enough scale of dining patrons to have such errors and maintain a loyal customer base. Not with the way rents are rising in DTJC. Not with the Manhattan/Brooklyn palates that continue to move in. There are just too many options that are superb, in DTJC and also only a short subway ride away across the river.

Growing pains. Sad to see that Union Republic didn't make it through this round of growing pains in the JC restaurant scene. I did like them, but they were a peripheral thought many times, because there are a lot of options.

I love the menu at UR. Quality has been very good. Sad to see it go. The times I've been there have been fairly sparse. One would think a restaurant that great would draw people willing to walk a few extra blocks from the main drag.

The rents are much higher than even a few years back - I only see a few storefronts available -- and the asking rent for the smallest places can be over $4000 a month.

It seems the Village hasn't gotten its groove yet. Multiple empty spaces on Newark across from UR and surrounding blocks. Golden Grille has shuttered too.

Their delivery service was non-existent. They didn't deliver, or at least they didn't the last few times I called them up.

I would be inclined to agree with this assessment, but I think that Madame Claude is a different beast. As a long time restaurant in DTJC, it has enjoyed a built-in following that has remained very loyal, even after many new options have come to town. Any time I go there, I see a lot of familiar faces. But, any of my friends that have only been in DTJC a few years don't even seem to know it exists. Sadly, people are (seemingly) limited in their willingness to walk far to try new places.

Food sucked and the ramen was a total joke, anyone who spent time in Japan would know this.

Daycare provider seems to be move as these places must be banking the cash at the fees they charge and salaries they pay.

Agreed - very little veg food...we wanted to support it but walked out when there were only a few items on the menu to choose from. Most restaurants will make some attempt to cover vegetarians but UR, not so much. Same issue with Talde - nothing on the menu. I'm sad to see any business leave...the space will probably be quickly rented to a daycare provider.

There was nothing much for vegetarians.

You think that was the issue?

It can be. In any party of 4 or so these days one vegetarian is not unusual at all. My wife was able to find things to eat there in the ramen menu, but we haven't tried Hamilton Pork because all she could eat would be sides, there's no fish or veg entrees.

My husband and I wanted to see UR succeed. The quality/caliber of their food and service was great... on good days. And that was our issue: inconsistency.

A dinner there one week involved a hair in the appetizer and delayed cocktails... A dinner there months later was impeccable...

A lunch there one week could involve several items missing from the menu and an unseasoned ramen... A lunch there mos later was wonderful (the cod fish and thai beef ramen were out of this world)....

After several rounds of this inconsistency, we would just start forgetting it was there. One of us would remember but then go, "meh, but remember last time...." I felt they had the right ingredients, no pun intended, for success, but were missing the business/management side... that's the story for many places in JC.

sad to lose ur....but it was a hike from the main dining areas and i did not have a compelling reason to visit more often. now if they $1 oysters or $1 shrimp, i would have been there more often.

The best cocktails in town.

This is a big loss to their fans, who I was always surprised didn't include a lot more people.

You will never see me say a bad word about the folks at UR, because the manager loaned me a piece of their kitchen equipment and wouldn't even take so much as my ID as a deposit for them. A truly nice person and I'm sad his business didn't succeed.

It wasn't the location. It was the mediocre, overpriced "fancy" food:
