Burke's is classic. I have been in there a few times after 10 PM to get wine or 6 pack, or even a few 24 ounce becks bottles...The guy (guess he is the owner) is very nice and there is a TV in the corner. Now, the clientele can be really really drunk people or hoods, depends on the night. Once I saw two guys with 1 bottle of vodka and a 2L bottle of coke chugging away their sorrows.

Everytime I've walked by when it's been open I've seen a handful of people sitting at stools at the bar in Burke's with drinks watching TV so I assume it's still a functioning bar. Haven't been in it in over a year though.

Don't know much about the history of this place but I did see this interesting artifact on Ebay:

I can't say I'm scared of any bar but I have only been to the ones downtown. I like Iron Monkey and Barcade the best due to beer selection. The one on Grove St with the weird half tables is the worst - for that reason plus not a great selection.

Really I just wanted to comment on the OP's name and pic. I love The IT Crowd. Just wish British TV seasons weren't so short. I've already seen all the episodes since it's only 6 a season.

You're certainly entitled to an opinion, but please know that there are many people who think that an amazing selection of beer is what makes a bar good. And I said "outside of the beer garden" in reference to the selection of beer ... not in overall quality of the bar.

Is this your 3rd, or 4th screen name on JClist?

--------------

Why? are you the JC List thought police?

an "amazing selection of beer" will never counteract a bar's lameness factor.

My vote would be Burke's Bar. Not that I'm too scared to go in there. I've gone a few times. But if there ever was a bar that made me feel uneasy when I was in it Burke's would be it. I remember a basebal bat resting right next to the cash register for quick access by the bartender and not being under the bar like most places.

I heard Healy's son bought it too. Then a couple weeks back the son was arrested in Hoboken for domestic violence for cracking some girl. Maybe that's why it is up for sale now?

Whatever happened with that weird bar way down Newark Ave. across from the fire house? Last I heard Healy's son bought it but it doesn't look like it ever opened and has a for sale sign in the window now.

You are nuts. . . Riverhorse, NJ beer company, Flying Fish, and Cricket Hill are all excellent breweries that can rival anything put out by the rest of the Northeast breweries. Granted they are not as established as some other craft breweries like stone, rogue or dogfishhead, but they still put out solid beers that can rival most any other brewery.

Barcade should featuring at least one beer at all times by Riverhorse, NJ beer Company, Flying Fish, and Cricket Hill...

LITM's beer selection is far from "amazing." For starters, they only hap two taps, one of which is a dedicated Chimay tap. So, if you don't like Belgian beers, your draft selections are extremely limited (especially if they put another belgian-style beer on the other line). Second, they over-emphasize New Jersey brewed beers, which is a mistake, as there are very few good beers brewed in-state. (Sorry Riverhorse, Cricket Hill and NJ Beer, you're just not that good). Skinners, with fewer total options, does a much better job bringing in quality craft beers on their rotating taps, and Barcade annilihates LITM on selection.

OK, but I didn't say it was an amazing "tap beer bar". I said it has an amazing selection of beers, which it does. I enjoy bottled beer as much as I enjoy tap beer, for the most part. Outside of beer garden, and I guess Iron Monkey (and maybe Skinner's but it's more of a restaurant), I'm not sure that any bar has a larger number of beers available at any given time than LITM.

On the 2-3 times I've been in LITM, I recall at least 20-25 beers available, maybe 30.

Tommy,
If you like IPA's try the relatively new Sam Adams Latitude 48

I've seen it in stores, but haven't tried it yet. Maybe Friday!
