Haha. I'm glad these guys come around every year nowadays. I'll tell you what, pretty soon we'll start seeing sharks in the harbor (seals are a shark's favorite snack).

I saw two seals last weekend, in the water off of Liberty State Park, while I was out running.

As of afternoon, 5/4, Sammy the Seal (after Lefrak ?,) is still here. Today he is fishing. He's trolling around in the area immediately South of all those pier remnants that he was sunning himself on, the area that is directly off the bulk of the new Newport addition to the walkway.

He made a great counterclockwise ellipse in that quiet "bay area" between all the pilings and the first of the Newport land piers, going almost all the way to that undefined mass of concrete WAY out almost into the river proper and then back round. The trip took about 1/2 hour. It looked purposeful.
It looks like he MIGHT be headed back to the sleepy log but I got tired waiting.

He comes up for about 15 seconds and has a good look around, takes a few deep breaths and then submerges for about 90 seconds to 2 minutes. He can cover a LOT of space in that one breath.

I was strolling on the walkay Saturday afternoon and the seal caught my eye so I made it my duty to point him/her out to about 100 passers by...all amazed, especially those with kids.
I was hoping he'd dive in for a fish but he seemed very content to laze in the Sun of a very warm day, occasionally lifting his tail high or waving one or the other of his flippers.

I don't know a LOT about seals but all this talk about a "baby seal" seems wrong to me. He seemed a porky 100-125 pounds to me. I don't know how big they get but "baby" doesn't seem to cut it.

I think I'll go out and see if I can find him again, three days later.

It's nice to know that a mammal CAN live in the Hudson again.

(First porpoise spotting gets a gold star.)

Baby seal still stranded in Hudson River at Jersey City-Hoboken border?

By Mark Maurer/The Jersey Journal
May 03, 2010, 1:31PM

Hoboken and Jersey City residents noted over the weekend the sighting of a baby seal stranded on the logs in the Hudson River not far from the Hoboken Light Rail walkway.

One Hoboken Now reader expressed concern for the seal amid the blistering, humid temperatures: ?It has been squirming and trying to get off the piling ? Poor thing baking in the sun.?

Others have said the little guy also made an appearance near the Maxwell Place beach in Hoboken.

Is this the same seal that showed up more than a month ago, or a signifier of a burgeoning new trend in Hoboken?s aquamarine life?

If you happen to spot him, please don?t hesitate to send us your photos and drop us a line on the spot.

Stopped by around 11 this morning and the seal wasn't there. It was low tide - he'd have been very visible if he was around. The pilings were a good three to four feet out of the water.

The video is getting very popular. Anyway to improve it so it isn't staticy right when our Mayor begins scratching his belly?

Let's call him Ralph. He looks like a Ralph. Adore that little guy.

This email was just sent to me.

Please use this information sent to us from the state and contact them if there is any land sightings or if there is any signs that the seal is in distress. The Marine Mammal Stranding Center is available 24/7. Phone: 609-266-0538 (see below)

"This is a harbor seal that is old enough to be on his own. They do travel alone, and he appears to be healthy with a good weight and no injuries. At this time MMSC and local authorities will monitor the seal, but it is not in distress. Although the boat traffic is a concern, these animals are very intelligent and will leave the area if they feel threatened. Seals are federally protected under the marine mammal protection act, and people are required to stay at least 50ft away. Please admire the seal from a distance and report any sightings or injuries to MMSC. The Marine Mammal Stranding Center is the only organization that is both federally and state authorized to handle Marine Mammals in New Jersey.

Thank you for the updates and video Robin, and please keep us posted on the sightings and concerns! We appreciate your calls. Also you can contact my director, Bob Schoelkopf, at the number below for more details or concerns."

Sincerely,
Brandi Biehl

I agree, it's annoying ... it actually is Jersey City water, since this is at the piers right off of Newport. I can GUARANTEE if it was something BAD (and not interesting and cute) that it would read "Jersey City waters". Guaranteed.

First of all, that is probably the cutest animal I've ever seen in my life, LOL.

Secondly, it'd be awesome if more of these cool animals started frequenting the area. When I pull out of, and into, the Morris Canal, there is a little tiny beach area there near Paulus Hook. In the summertime, there are kids, families and dogs hanging out there ... it'd be AWESOME if there were herds of seals sunbathing there.

Jersey City Animal Control is in contact with the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife Marine Unit. There are 4 species of seals that frequent this area. Three of them can actually overheat in this weather. The state is reviewing the Webmasters video to see if this is one of them that will warrant a rescue or it is fine to let it be.

dude looks pretty chillaxed. and he's moved from a log to a piling, so it's not like he can't get around.

but don't seals hang out in groups? maybe he's been "stranded" by his peeps?

In spring and summer months, the seals migrate back up to New England for the colder waters. If I know that, I'm sure the Animal Control people know that.

That was a joke, I think. Let me rewrite the punch line:

They're not sure where in Lincoln Park they're supposed to dump seals.

And one of my own:
Maybe the little guy came to NYC for the clubbing.

Sorry.

The verbiage of the story is confusing. So, is this seal FLOATING on a log, in the river? Or is it resting on a piece of land, or a pier, when the water went down for low tide?

I'm wondering why Animal Control hasn't grabbed the little guy and brought him to safety? Can a seal live safely around here? I don't even know...maybe they can.
