Went for dinner tonight. The endive salad was delicious. The Arctic Char was ok - but a bit overcooked. My wife's meal, however, was a disaster. She ordered the potato, truffle, leek ravioli in a cream sauce. First bite she took, the ravioli was ice cold inside. Frozen Ravioli!!!?? When we informed the waiter, he apologized and came back 10 mins later with what looked like a bowl of soup with several floating ravioli in it. Rather than actually re-do the dish properly, it appeared as though they tried to re-heat the same frozen ravioli in a bowl of milk. It was nasty and tasteless. Worst of all, they didn't even comp the nasty ravioli entree. Great way to encourage business. Needless to say, we won't be back.

Went back for the second time, first since their opening weekend when I wasn't thrilled with the place. Much better experience this go round.

Sat outside (preferable, imho, even with Erie traffic). The pea soup wasn't particularly tasty, though very green. But the pork belly in a maple-syrupy sauce ($21) was fantastic, one of the best dishes I've had in JC in a long time, super tender, fatty the way it should be and a great combination of flavors. Linda's shrimp salad sandwich, of which I took a nibble, was also very good.

A bit pricey to be a regular stop but the pork belly will lure me back.

Absolutely love it...I have been there several times, twice over the past two weeks and love the place. Besides the great design of the place, the food is awesome...I think it's better than Lighthorse. I had a steak, which was perfect and a burger that was perfect as well. Too bad we are moving out of JC next week...I was so nice having a great restaurant in my neighborhood...

based on the burger and the steak? or other comperable dishes?

i know "better" is subjective, but not sure I see cause to base judgement on nothing tangible.

Lighthorse is an established, well regarded restaurant in this area, Embankement clearly has a lot of work to get to that level (noting that consistancy should be job #1 for any food establishment)

I've actually been there 6 times (bar, meal at bar, brunch, and dinner) so I think I can make an informed decision...It is better than Lighthorse...IMO...Is that OK with you (validating my credentials)

New to town, been here about a month.

I've eaten at the embankment 4 times so far, each time has been consistent and an all around fun experience.

The first couple times I sat at the bar alone. They have a very friendly bar crew that was cracking me up with their comments on the euro 2008 match. The burger is a monster and the beer is cold.

Sat outside for brunch last weekend and had an instant hangover cure with their jersey city sandwich. (basically a taylor ham, bacon, egg, and cheese the size of my fist)

Went back again last night and had amazing scallops and my girlfriend had a nice vegetarian dish that the chef put together for her.

2 blocks away and quickly becoming a staple for me.

The chopped potatoes were not even mentioned on the menu for this dish.

This seems to be a recurring theme. I had the duck from them a couple weeks ago and one of the ingredients was fig. While it was very delicious, not even the waiter knew what it was and had to ask the chef. Given how some people are allergic to certain things, leaving them off the menu seems like asking for a lawsuit from some freaked out individual.

I went there with a friend when they first opened , and we were really pleased with the service as well as the food. Their Lychee martinis were really the best I ever had. I wish them the best of luck.

I just want to welcome the Embankment restaurant to Jersey City. It is definitely a welcome addition to the already diverse culinary establishments that are present in downtown Jersey.

My wife and I have eaten there twice and both times we were thoroughly impressed. Even thier bar menu offerings (grilled shrimp) in particular were excellent.

Dave and Ann Marie (from the Merchant) have done an outstanding job with everything from the interior decor to the china. They have definitely taken dining to a new level with the Embankment.

Best Of Luck!

I was there last week for happy hour. Service was considerably slow considering there were only 4 other people in the bar area. We also had exceptionally slow service when I went there for brunch back in the spring. Slow service seems to be the common denominator amongst most JC restaurants I have visited.

My boyfriend loves the hamburgers here. They're perfectly cooked and served on a nicely toasted yummy roll--his favorite part--I think it's sourdough bread but I'm not sure. The fries also meet his very picky standards. There are cheaper bars to get a burger but he insists on spending the extra to come here and really enjoy it.

haha i've never heard anyone called a muppet before, touche, I'm going to have to use that sometime.

I ate at The Embankment last night. Service was excellent; the salads were delicious, the crab and corn chowder was exquisite. Only complaint is that the buns were too thick for my burger. Otherwise, amazing dining experience, will def go back.

So last Saturday 4 of us went here, pretty early like around 6:45 and while there were some people at the bar, we were the only table inside the restaurant. We left around 8:00 and at that point there were only 2 other tables that had come in.

What's the deal with this place? Is it more of a week day crowd? The food was really good I thought. Just wondering why it was so dead?

Been there twice now. Last time was on Sunday (Mother's day). Extremely slow both times. It wasn't that busy when we got there on Sunday either.

I was also at the embankment for mother's day. there were 6 of us in total. not really sure how much time our food took, because I was enjoying the company of my family.

Yet, the topic of time it takes for food to cook has come up there before. Talking to one of their waiters gave me all the information I need. Good food takes time. Upon ordering their roast chicken once, I was infromed it would take up to 20 minutes to roast the chicken. How can I argue with a place that is actually cooking my food to order instead of microwaving it or reheating it.

That's like a business lunch I had in the city a month back where one of the people I was sitting with ordered a giant steak medium well and couldn't understand why it takes so long to cook it.

It's odd how this vortex of impatience seems to center in manhattan and sprawl out from there across the land. In Europe people eat for hours. Actually having a conversation with their family and being involved in each other's lives.

Here I've seen grown adults through hissy fits when someone can't get there scooped out low fat cream cheese bagel to them in under a minute. Lady if you are late for work, skip the bagel.

Ranting aside, my meal on mother's day was great. The drinks were great. Service was great. Much like Moxie's Post stated...The Embankment gets it right!

I agree with the AlexanderCan's point about good food needing time, anyone who regularly cooks at home knows that food made with fresh ingredients takes time. I think the only thing people ever want is communication from the waitstaff - I've been to Ox, one of my favorites in JC, numerous times and on the very few times when food is running slow due to a back-up in the kitchen the waitstaff has always kept us in the loop with what's going on. To me that makes the difference between aggravation and acceptance. I've only been to Embankment three times for brunch and each time the food has been good enough if not memorable (they do have Leffe Brown though, might be worth it for that alone), but the service has been good and I have seen them communicate to other tables when the food was running slow. People should expect to wait a reasonable amount of time for well-prepared quality food, but they also deserve a status update from time to time.

To LynnePatrice and 986's point I have to agree - that restaurant is huge and I never see a ton of people in there. Again, only gone for brunch so maybe hit it on a bad day but I've often wondered how they've kept such a large and fairly pricey restaurant open especially given the economic climate.

We really did enjoy it there, that's the reason for my post. I was concerned with the lack of customers. There are not a ton of great, more upscale places in JC so it's nice when one does open and the food and service is good. It's a nice place to take the parents or out of town guests.

From what I saw no but I've only been there one time. Seems like from this thread, probably not.

But just curious, why not just be safe and call and make one?

I know good food takes time, but we're talking about Eggs Benedict and Irish Breakfasts here, not Michelin Star fare.

Many restaurants serving similar food of the same quality at similar prices are able to get the food out at a much quicker pace. Even the Merchant (with the same owner as the Embankment) is a lot quicker.

Whoever mentioned about meals in Europe taking hours, that's not really relevant. We are in the metro NY area. The expectation is that food is served promptly. Most successful restaurants can do it.

It's clear that there's a problem in the kitchen that's either process or resource(i.e. staff) related. This could likely be fixed easily.

Had apps and drinks on Sunday afternoon. Very good. Particularly the duck quesadilla. Place was crowded with Mother's Day people, but was served quickly and pleasantly.

All that I was saying was that for someone to whine about having to wait, what, 20 minutes for breakfast on the busiest brunch day in the restaurant business is what seems irrelevant to me.

Yes, we live in the metro area, but big deal. People don't have the patience to wait 1 minute for things.

(Just look about how many people complain that the path train only runs every 10 minutes or 30 minutes on the weekends! Whaa...I expect nyc quality things/speed but I live in NEW JERSEY).

You don't have to be at a 4 or 5 star restaurant to expect a laid back, leisurely meal.

I don't mind waiting for good food. Even good eggs. Ox and the Embankment are two places that serve quality fare that I don't mind waiting for.

Also, I've been in and out of both places on a friday night with 3 other people in under an hour and a half. That's with 2 or 3 courses and coffee.

Big Deal.

Ha. I don't think I've ever had anyone call me that. I'm almost blushing.

I understand people have lives. I really do.

I just don't see the point in being impatient for something like mother's day brunch or good food. I don't know. I'd be mad too if I were waiting a crazy amount of time for things, yet, it seems like the complaints about these restaurants are for a small amount of time.

I get more mad at people that are in front of me in a long line and then get to the front and have no idea what they want. Or people rubber necking it for a broke down car on the othe side of the highway.

I was just trying to say that if one were to order food someplace (especially if it is food for a big table) and it's in front of you in 5 or 10 minutes, you have to wonder how it was cooked and how long ago it was cooked.

When I was driving by this morning, the front door was open, and there was a crew inside that appeared to be doing some repainting or remodeling. My g/f and I live around the corner, and it's one of our favorite places in J.C. We were even considering holding our wedding reception there! Please tell me it isn't closing!

restaurant menus and dishes are designed to accomidate a certain pace of dining. a good kitchen, executing a well thought out menu should deliver all courses within a certain range, even at peak hours.

The best restaurant I ever cooked in trained you to start dishes x-minutes into it's initial call so that all stations would be firing tables simultaniously, with little to no resting time when everything was clicking.

the "time" and "care" one might equate with home cooking occurs before service. there are certainly hours and hours of prep that go into every breakfast/lunch/dinner service, but they are accomplished in advance so that we do not have to wait during meals.

Went back to the Embankment after staying away for a few months, and was pleasantly surprised.

If you don't mind eating early, they've expanded what I remembered as a Wednesday special to Mon-Fri(4-7pm), Happy Hour 1/2 price appetizer menu is excellent. We ordered a the mussles in white wine sauce (excellent), duck quesadillas (great), crab cake (excellent), and barbecued wings (good).

Can't beat that half price appetizers and Draft Beer. we'll be back, Cheers!

Was supremely bummed by the greek salad and the french onion soup. Think maybe they didn't mix the concentrate in the soup properly, or however they make it, and it was not quite right. They did take it off the bill for us. Greek salad was unique but not in ways that made it better. We are still waiting for a meal that equals the price point. Something feels amiss every time we are there. We'll keep trying and keep hoping. But it always feel like there's some experimenting with uniqueness but it is at the price of not being as good as it could be.

Dragon,
That depends on when you go and which side of the menu you order off of.
7 days a week 4-7, and all night on Tuesdays, the "bar" menu is 50% off. In that case, 1 dish + a beer will run you $9-$12.
If you eat off the dinner side of the menu, the typical salad is $10 and the typical entree $18-$24 so your total will be $28-$30.

This place is my fave. I'm having my wedding reception there next summer.

A group of friends and myself went to the Embankment Restaurant last night after a failed attempt to have dinner at the new Hamilton Park Inn restaurant (simply too crowded). For a group of six adults and a baby, the Embankment turned out to be a better choice, with lots of room, softer music, and good service. The food was pretty good as well. We really enjoyed our dinner and the relaxed ambiance... Kind of surprised that for a Friday night it was not crowded at all.

I ordered the endives and Arugula salad as appetizer and it really hit the spot with the sliced pears, blue cheese and chopped walnuts... highly recommend. For main course I ordered the seared scallops with risotto, very tasty as well, perfect dish size. No room for dessert though, will save it for next time.

This was not our first time at the Embankment Restaurant and we'll certainly return for more dinner gatherings!

The Embankment is really good but they seem to have a problem with consistency. I have gone there and it was pretty empty and the food comes out cold. It is still tasty cold so i guess that says something.

The Interior Design is lacking. The booths are a little rickety. I wonder if they had the same firm that did Ole do their design. It has the same homemade feel.

It has the potential to be a really good restaurant.. it doesn't seem to get the traffic tho. I would really hate to see it go.

Went there last weekend for brunch. The burger, which was delicious when they first opened, was served on a stale roll, and the meat had zero flavor. I hope all the food there hasn't taken a dive...are the short ribs still good?

Starting on opening night - this Wednesday, July 21st The Embankment Restaurant is offering their $30 prix fixe meal to those seeing our show later that night.

Here's how it works:

My best guess is the jury is still out on whether 10th street/Hamilton Park can support 2 bar/restaurants that have Manhattan-style food and those prices.

I'd hate to see either Hamilton Inn or Embankment close but the simple fact is you can tell most of the folks that live in the larger apartment buildings in this neighborhood don't use either of these places and that really limits their market.

The (indian run) grocery, nail salon and dry cleaners on this street were all "ok" and yet have closed recently.

Are you sure about the nail salon? I just booked my bridal party to get mani/pedi's there.

As for The Embankment, they're doing a lot of private parties (weddings, showers, etc) now, which it appears other neighborhood restaurants don't do. So each business has a different niche.

I love The Embankment. I also really like newcomer Parkside Bistro.

Definitely check...it wasn't a place i ever went in (!), but i am pretty sure all 3 businesses in that space are gone now and they have signs on the door looking for deli, nail salons and dry cleaners.

Parkside Bistro is great and a very welcome addition to the 'hood. It's not a bar so i don' think of it as direct competition to Embankment and Hamilton in..and it's 2 blocks away so not immediate neighborhood or 10th street, actually.

Good luck with the bridal shower!
