Too much about this story - people get ripped-off all the time.
All this suggests, is that the website has poor checks and balances to help mitigate such exchanges ... I bet if the police asked the website for details on the exchange (names, ip addresses etc), they will say 'no'. It would appear the website doesn't really care about their users by not seeking such details and having security / safety checks. All that's happening now, is that we are just prompting / marketing the site in question. We need to finger point the problem to mitigate it:

I had never heard of grindr, so a web search brought me to that story. It was interesting to me how intolerant some members of that community appeared to be, considering they expect tolerance themselves.

Someone using the Internet or an app to meet another person and bang isn't anything new or scandalous. Why should they be embarrassed about reporting a crime? The same thing could happen if you brought someone you just met home from a bar or club.
