Has anyone seen or heard anything from Candice Osborne about this proposal...? I live downtown and expect that Candice (Ward E councilperson) would be mobilizing community input about it. Yet, there doesn't seem to have been a single word from her. I couldn't find anything about this bridge or the meeting on her Twitter feed. Candice's lack of visibility on an issue related to traffic in downtown ? something she campaigned on ? worries me a lot. The public meeting is Monday June 22, I'm wondering if she will even show...?

You can't convince them, it's an article of faith at this point. The same mantras get repeated, like "it's a shortcut to Downtown from B-L." That's for people who can't use maps. I repost this map showing its actually longer.

I have spent the last school year driving over to Snyder High school every morning at 8:00 am and then back to Exchange Place, so consider myself an expert on the traffic stuation in that area. I have tried every possible route when getting back during rush hour.

In the morning rush hour every road running north from Bergen Lafayette is blocked up - Bergen, MLK, Ocean, Garfield, Pacific - all of them are backed up, and this is because Communipaw/Grand is backed up, it's simple!

Adding another road emptying into Communipaw/Grand won't help, the new road will be equally as blocked as the others. Anyone living in Bergen Lafayette who thinks this road will magically eliminate these jams is mistaken.

I think that intersection will have lights.


That *could* be an improvement, or not. Given how some drivers LOVE to run stop signs and lights all over downtown, I am not sure this will be better for pedestrians.

Even if the park isn't badly affected, does it really make sense for local streets to be a highway bypass by design? Marin is bad enough already. We should be fighting against having even more cars passing through local neighborhoods.

I'm not a car booster, but IMO it's highly unlikely this is going to cause an epic traffic tie-up.

It's just going to make it a little easier for some people to get to LSP, LSC and a few other spots. It may not be the best use of that funding, but it will not result in an Autocopalyse In the Park.

As already noted, it's not ridiculous. It's an active marina, and building a footbridge will be prohibitively expensive and won't meet accessibility needs.

In terms of getting there, here's a simple solution: Walk to the pedestrian bridge. Or, better yet: Hop on your bike. You'll be in the park in 10 minutes tops. Lots of people do it every day.

And please, don't expect gobs of sympathy because it takes you the same amount of time to get to Liberty State Park as everyone else in DTJC.

The Johnston Avenue crossing doesn't get gridlocked, because right now it doesn't lead to a road that cuts through to downtown.

If the Jersey Avenue extension is opened, there will of course be more traffic.

Yup, K-Lo. You just linked to another example of how urban cities all over the world are firmly moving away from pandering to vehicles, and are instead increasing safety and access for pedestrians.

Jersey City has made a firm commitment to the opposite, and this vehicular bridge into our crown jewel park is one example.

Jersey City should be focusing on increasing pedestrian access to the park, which is abysmal, rather than increasing car access. WTF? This is a park. Not a shopping mall.

Not to mention the very obvious negative impact it will have on the Van Vorst Park area. This is very bad, and it makes me sick that it seems like a done deal. Fulop sold his soul on this one, and that sucks.

I agree that it's a done deal. Fulop gave away all that land for the Liberty Science Center hotel and school, do you think he's going to want people to drive Johnston/Pacific/Grand to get to downtown from there? Not to mention the casino traffic from further down the street.

I'm with Brewster and EthanCrane ? build a new road and the cars will come, filling it to capacity very quickly. So to me this is bad news. Moreover, I think it's a ?done deal?, and the community meeting on June 22nd is entirely pro forma. Those wanting commercial development in the LSP / Science Center vicinity (casino, hotel, etc.) see this bridge as a requirement to improve access. They could care less about traffic on local streets, or about riders on the HBLR.

Here's what I believe will happen if (when) this bridge is built. During the a.m. rush hour as drivers seek an alternate to the Colombus Drive exit both the HBLR crossing and the Jersey / Grand intersection will become significantly congested. Why? The traffic volume that this new route can handle is limited due to the HBLR grade crossing on Jersey with frequent red lights so trains can get through. Then, for traffic that does reach Jersey & Grand, those lights will need to be re-timed to stop the traffic on Grand ? more congestion.

Here's what should happen next but won't given the history of ?planning? in Jersey City. A legitimate traffic study needs to be conducted with special attention to these issues. The results should be released for public scrutiny and analysis. Someone should time the lights and figure out just how many cars can get through, and the effect at the potential bottlenecks. Moreover, since grade crossings aren't optimal this could be quite unsafe. NJT needs to provide input, as do riders on the HBLR who will be delayed by any cars on the tracks, any accidents and any changes to timing of lights at the crossing.

Wrong on the first account. I am the furthest from a B-L resident. I do think it's comical that downtown residents see this bridge as a one way super freeway to their beloved, quiet and traffic-free neighborhoods and not as a two-way mutually beneficial logical roadway connection to one of the most prized open spaces in all of Hudson County.

I think this is what they mean when they say we should study and learn history so we can better understand it. The London Eye (now branded as the Coca Cola London Eye...!) was not part of some sort of government program to develop the south bank as a "real destination". Where did you get that from!? It was a vanity project as part of the Millenium (Y2K) celebrations. It wasn't even supposed to be a permanent installation!! That only became a reality in 2002, when it was decided that it would be a permanent London attraction.

What about a gondola or sky ride across the marina, like Roosevelt Island? Why not turn that spot into a destination? Link it to Liberty State Park and you've got yourself a fun weekend experience for tourists. Downtown loses out on tourism in LSP because it might as well be across the Hudson.

The view from the gondola would be amazing. I proposed a London Eye type of ferris wheel experience there long ago, long before the Staten Island announcement. I see this spot as a real opportunity for JC. Tourist would come across from the city if there was something worth seeing/doing. It worked in London. The south bank is now a real destination whereas before it was mainly ignored. And the entire reason for its development as a tourist destination was the view back over the river.

You should really stop saying it every time.

Does the HBLR crossing under the train tracks on Johnston gridlock? Why would Grand St. gridlock?

Which cars coming from the Turnpike that would take the new Jersey Ave bridge are not already on Johnston?

The cars that use Johnston > Pacific still cross at Jersey and Grand. Do those cars cause intersection gridlock? Why would there be instant gridlock if the cars are coming down Jersey instead of down Grand?

Your rational is so misdirected.

In practice an ez-pass lockout would be tough. People without ez-pass going through an ez-pass lane simply get a bill in the mail. Treble the cost might work - but you risk angering folks who have a legit reason to go via JC.

Not an impossibility, just absurdly expensive to make it high enough to clear the tallest masts. And if did, no doubt many would complain it was an eyesore blocking their views.

If the property owners of Paulus Hook really feel strongly about access, they could easily cooperate on creating a small ferry service.


ok, I should have said not feasible. My small (compared to a lot of the boats in the marina) 33 foot sail boat would need a clearance of at least 40 feet. A sail boat double that size? You are talking 80 to 100 feet of clearance. The foot bridge is where it is for a reason.
