Agreed, it's incredibly good! It is BYOB - beer or wine - and they'll provide ice buckets, etc. to help out.
I think of it as a really safe place to try new fishes - the other night we had Dogfish for the first time and it was delicious and perfectly prepared. Tory and the guys know their stuff. They have gumbo on the menu now, too - also highly recommended. We're very glad to have them in the neighborhood!

I got the wire ran this weekend, have called Suez to come out and inspect to get me off the naughty list.
But until they come out, there's no way to know if the thing even works - they have to hold their unit up to it to read it. So fingers crossed, I guess.

Thanks! I found it! It's held on by half a screw, dangling from a piece of wood near my gas meters. I've always wondered what it was, never got around to investigating it.
I do know that, for the 4 years I've owned this place, it's never been hooked up. I guess the Suez guy can no longer get into the basement and now demands that the remote works - we've been doing renovations and the basement is now part of the residence, and no longer 'common space' and accessible. (The past few bills have been 'estimated' and they asked for a special appointment to come and read actuals. Then I got the violation letter.) This Saturday I'm apparently now figuring out how to run wire out to that dumb plastic thing, if anyone wants to come join me. Should be a hoot.

Suez says 'need wire ran' ??

I got a note I'm in violation, "need wire ran" is all the detail behind how I'm in violation.
I called them, the woman didn't know anything more, put me on hold, apparently asked around, and came back to me saying "from the water meter to the remote". I assume this is a device that can be read from outside, without the need to enter the basement. I need help from you guys... 1. I didn't know I had a remote (unless they just installed it, but then I'd assume they'd have ran the wire during install). What does a remote look like? 2. Anyone familiar with what wire needs to be ran, and how? Happy to do this myself with a bit of knowledge, also happy to call an electrician, but still need a bit of knowledge.. Suez hasn't been able to help further, so far - they themselves can't come out and run the wire and cannot provide referrals. So I'm stuck at the moment. Thanks,

I'm currently using Lock & Tech for a new door buzzer & intercoms, and I've been happy with them so far.

Was in there yesterday - a Cappuccino was $2.95. Small drip coffee is $2, a large is $2.50.

We just used Roof4Roof. Excellent work, great pricing. And they use a portion of all proceeds toward new roofs for deserving families.

Update: We're delayed. His current project in NYC has grown in scope and we're now looking at doing some work in November (weather permitting) and then really getting into it in March (or whenever the weather allows). No worries on this end; these things happen.

FYI - I'm contracting with Across the River Brownstone to rebuild the stoop and reface the facade. They plan to begin work in August. I'll keep you updated with progress, quality, etc.

Thanks - Jack actually never returned my call, but it sounds like I won't get too upset by that, given your and others' bad experiences with his company.
Original question remains: How do you work with contractors not licensed in NJ? All the good brownstone companies seem to be NY-based! Given the size of this kind of job, I just won't work with anyone not insured. Quote:

Thanks, BJay - I've left a message with Jack Pereira.. I've already had Excellent Contracting and Innovation Construction out to the house - they are not licensed in NJ.
But more to the topic - does anyone have advice on working with companies not licensed in NJ? (Options do seem limited for brownstone work) Can you go through a General Contractor who is licensed, and then sub-out to the NY company? Do you just take your chances? Do you just say no! ?

Brownstone Stoop and Facade Work in JC

Hello - new to the forum, recently bought a brownstone near Liberty State Park, in need of a lot of love.
After researching established and trusted companies who specialize in brownstone restoration, most seem based in Brooklyn or Manhattan. Many of them have told me that they have done many projects in JC, but yet are not licensed in NJ. If they're not licensed, I understand that a) they can't pull a permit, and b) they won't be insured. Has anyone faced this? I really want all contractors I work with to be insured, first, and to pull permits when needed, second - which means they need licensed in NJ. Thoughts / advice / options are appreciated! Thanks,
