I stopped in a couple days ago and got two cupcakes. The owner is really nice and the cupcakes were delicious, and properly sized -- not painfully sweet like Magnolia or gaudily gigantic like Crumbs.

According to their site, the official grand opening is happening right now: http://www.cupcakesalon.com/CSSevents.htm

I hope they offer coffee and some tables to sit at. I'd rather go here than Starbuck's.

Also: +1 to coronalime's idea of promoting this stretch of Grove. There's a lot of cool shops and restaurants up there -- and room for more -- but I think for a lot of people it's a bit hidden.

Walked by today and it was open, so I bought a cupcake. It was sweet and tasty.

I just don't get why everyone must be so cynical anytime anyone posts something on here. Shouldn't you be happy that businesses are opening in your area and wish them luck! Like someone said opening a business takes hard work and a lot of guts, we should be supporting the local businesses that open in the area, not try and tear them down.

So glad to hear this! Love Cupcake Salon! I was so disappointed when I saw the shop shuttered up at the mall. This is great news! The owner is super sweet and makes DELICIOUS cupcakes. 10x better than the dry a** cupcakes from Magnolia's.

To all you haters, you should be ashamed yourselves! Support this local business; the owner is extremely pleasant, professional and has an excellent product.

Good start!

But you'll know Jersey City has truly made it when we get a Pinkberry and a Red Mango to set up shop across the street from one another.

I'm definitely excited to have fresh-baked cupcakes in the neighborhood -- it's nice to have another dessert option, especially with Torico's still renovating. They're actually in quite a good location, I think, as long as they stay open pretty late: lots of people will want to stop in on their way home from work or after eating at any one of the many restaurants on those couple blocks.

Opening any business and making a profit takes guts, hard work and perseverance. Most new businesses fail. Things are even harder in a down economy. Ive lived in Jersey City for over 25 years and Ive seen many local businesses open and close. I am always thrilled when someone has the courage to open a new business. Their endeavor has many positive ramifications for our city including job creation, taxes and providing more shopping options for every taste. If you dont like cupcakes, dont buy them. If you have an issue with the way a business owner conducts their business this is a good forum to vent your grievances. To take a negative stance on the opening of a cupcake shop doesnt add anything positive to this discussion. I look forward to trying out the new cupcake shop. I hope they do very well!

Every time I passed them at the mall, they always had a surprising number of people patronizing them. Personally, I've been sick of cupcakes for years...as a result of way too many office parties, I just associate them with office food.

However, to the point of the location, the businesses on Grove Street north of Newark Ave should work together to bring in more people from the Palus Hook, VVP and western half of Hamilton Park neighborhoods who would not typically walk down that way.

I'd suggest blocking off the street up to 1st and creating a pedestrian plaza one day a week, to coincide with the farmers market or groove on grove, or they could do a regular Saturday or Sunday outdoor market kind of thing. There are a ton of businesses on those two blocks who seem to be just squeaking by. With more promotion, events and imagination they could bring in a lot more business.

Good luck!

I think what you're really complaining about is overexposure. Magnolia and Carlo's were great neighborhood bakeries until they became famous and started attracting all the losers who have nothing better to do than stand in line for hours to buy a few dollars worth of baked goods so they can tell their friends "OMG, I was at that place in Sex & the City!!" Ruined it for the rest of us, but I don't think the owner of either place is complaining. Isn't that really every small business owner's dream? Go check out Cupcake Cafe on 18th Street between 5th and 6th Aves. Great bakery attached to a bookstore - and the kind of neighborhood hangout I wish JC had more of. No d-bags either because the place isn't famous.

Nice to start seeing some Newport Mall stores moving into the Grove Street area -- however they should have opened right on Newark Avenue for the foot traffic and visibility.

Maybe Ian is a bit harsh, but I really don't get the whole stand in a two-block line for whatever the hell you'd get in Carlo's Bake Shop. Good for them - they've captured an odd niche of a market and they've made the most of it, but for the life of me I'll never understand what drives that kind of compulsion.

Please. Let's take a minute to think about the places that spawned famous cupcakeries and think about the people in those places.

Sprinkles, Los Angelos
Magnolia, West Village
Carlo's Bakery, Hoboken

Like I said, Worst People On Earth.

Carlos is not a cupcake store. They are an Italian bakery. They have been around for years, back when Hoboken was a "rough neighborhood."

I'm man enough to admit it - cupcakes are pretty darn tasty.

I haven't noticed the shop though. Does it appear close to opening?

Looks like there's a cupcake shop opening up next to the Little Sandwich Shop. Anyone know anything about it?
