There are a few different routes running, which you'll pick up on after a bit. Just make sure to confirm they're going where you need to go before you hop on.

Pay either before or after, sometimes the fare depends on how far you're going (generally $1.50, unless you're going up to Bergen County).

yep, ask the driver first if he is going to the mall, everyone I have ever been on I've paid when I got off not on. Good Luck, I've never had any problems so far.

All right. Would someone be nice enough to give me the quick-and-dirty on the little dollar buses? I moved from the 'burbs to DTJC 2 years ago ... and in the intervening period, realized I had no desire to have a car anymore, gave mine to my college-aged kiddo this past August ... and now am all about hoofing it or public transportation.

Now I like walking, but this week, with the cold, snow, ice, et cetera, and needing to hit the mall, I figure it's time for me to get acquainted with the little buses. But I confess to being a little intimidated by the unknown culture of it all.

So when one comes through my neighborhood and seems to stop at Newark and Monmouth, what ... I flag it down, jump on, hand the driver the fare in cash, and tell him I need to go to the mall? And then find one from the mall headed back up Newark Ave? Is it that simple?

In fort lee they go along anderson avenue and center avenue to the bridge, and then they cross over to new york. The north and south routes are a little different because of one way streets.

Nearly 60 percent of commuter vans fail surprise inspections in Jersey City

Updated: Sunday, December 12, 2010, 7:20 PM
Charles Hack/The Jersey Journal

Nearly 60 percent of the commuter vans stopped at a checkpoint in Jersey City yesterday morning had to be taken out of service for major safety violations, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said today.

Fifteen of the 26 vans stopped for inspection at the parking lot next to the Hudson County Administration Building at 585 Newark Ave. had to be impounded, DeFazio said.

DeFazio said the infractions ran the gamut of safety problems, including bad brakes, faulty steering components, non-working emergency exits, and bald tires

One driver was arrested and charged with hindering investigation for producing false identification, he said.

The Prosecutor's Office conducted the inspections in conjunction with the Jersey City Police Department, the Hudson County Sheriff's Office, and the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.

DeFazio said that despite more than a dozen such commuter van inspections across Hudson County over the past few years, "the situation is not improving."

"Public safety is the issue that has to be addressed by these van operators and owners," he added

Does anyone know how early in the morning the dollar buses start up? Could I catch one on Newark Avenue heading towards Grove Street Path at 5am time frame?

Thanks in advance!

your friend could take the dollar bus/mini van that says NEW YORK on Palisade. They start running at 5:00 am and the drop off is on 7th Ave and Times Square area.

If you live in the Hamilton Park area, can you get one of these vans to any of the PATH stations? Where would you go to get them?

And do they run as early 6am?

Thanks in advance.

Not the bus, but that early in the morning your friend can take the Light Rail at 4:50am from the 9th St-Congress station to Hoboken Terminal, and either take the 126 bus at 5:10am (the next one is 5:40am) to the Port Authority or the PATH train to 33rd and walk.

i dont get it. they've always stop there-it's a NJT Bus Stop. If this was recent, the only thing i can think of is that the NJT Bus forbid them to stop there, otherwise, the Dollar Bus has always been dropping and boarding passengers on that spot.

I know the police bust their chops a lot, but the corner of Newark and grove street is an official mkt bus stop, if mkt can stop there why can't the jitney's stop there too?

in their defense, they don't do it just because they feel like it, they'll do it if there isn't a cop nearby, others got ticketed so many times they will stop only at bus stops. sometimes cops will do a sweep of ticketing the dollar buses for a day or a week-that's when they won't stop in some areas you're used to. it's like they're playing hide-and-seek with cops. lol

Have you ever driven a car behind these things? They are a menace, and if they were held to the same traffic laws the rest of us abide by (and they are obviously immune to), they would be arrested and never allowed to operate any motor vehicle ever again.

Ever drive behind a taxi cab / regular city bus / school bus?

Yes I have. A taxi generally only makes one stop. A city bus stops at designated bus stops, and a school bus obviously makes many stops, but it's just bad luck if you're caught behind one. But they only run twice a day. These jitneys have absolutely ZERO rules and run 24/7.

are there any dollar vans that run the length of Montgomery?

in all my years of taking the dollar buses they have never go enroute to Montgomery.

they come from Union City enroute to Palisade Ave then turn to Newark Ave/dickinson High school up to Summit Ave/Newark where they turn and stop at Newark/Pavonia they call ths Journal Square Stop. Then head down to Grove St -downtown , then enroute to Newport mall. Then they take the same route back to Jersey City.

***sometimes a driver might take Columbus Drive route and turn to go back to Newark Ave route back to Jersey City

RE: Schedules

You meet some guy near Christ Hospital that works out of a 4x4 located in front of a pharmacy. He wears dark glasses and a big hat. Since there are no printed schedules, he will only quote it verbally. This is the extent of information available.
