You can also get Cocoa's cake truffles and biscotti at Ridgewood Coffee Co. in Ridgewood, NJ

And TOMORROW, The Early Show will be interviewing Jessie about COCOA CLUB, the crowd funding program for Cocoa, at the Hamilton Park Farmer's Market, where you can get Cocoa goods every Wednesday between 4pm and 8pm.

I believe I've already posted this in this thread, but it must be said again. Cocoa Bakery's stuff is outstanding. Their chocolate cake is to die for, as are their cake truffles. She's in the Hamilton Park farmer's market and also online.

That explains why the key lime pie I had at Hamilton Inn last week was the BEST key lime pie I've ever had anywhere, including Florida. It was also the only good thing I had at Hamilton Inn that night - - apps and entree were very 'eh'. But I'll be back for the key lime pie!

I've ordered two cakes recently from Cocoa and they were outstanding. Best in Jersey City.

That's great to hear that this place is still planning to open.

EricFleming, no pressure, but any idea when you will officially "open the doors"?

awesome I was hoping Hamilton Park in would be smart enough to hook up with a local Bakery.

FedUp has it about right.
While we work to get open, we are baking offsite and taking bakery/catering/wedding cake orders and delivering to JC, Hoboken, as well as NYC.

You can also find our desserts exclusively at Hamilton Inn in Hamilton Park.

Thanks

The place is 90% done but the kitchen equipment is missing from what i could see. That is the expensive part of any restaurant.
Hope they make it. There is nothing over in that area at the moment except the diner

I have been anxiously waiting the opening, supposedly in April was the last posted on this site. However on another site I saw remarks that they had lost their funding and are not actually going to open a storefront bistro. I bike past the site all the time too and it does not look like any work is being done. Yet their website lists a new executive chef hired.
Does anyone have an official update?

I spoke to Jessie last week. They are opening her store front in April '10. She is currently baking and taking orders. Her # is: 201-830-3430. I hear she is busy for Valentine's Day!

Good question. Their website looks like it has not been updated for months. Anything in the JC grapevine about this place?

I wonder if there are going to be vegan options. Subia's is great, but this is just around the corner.

Is there any update as to when the bistro will be up and running?
I am really looking forward to it, I love the pics they have on the website and I am sure I will be frequenting it often.

Also, a suggestion to as to the bakery-- while buttercream has its fans, I and many people I know despise the "famous" nyc cupcake establishments that offer overly sweet, buttercream frostings that really all taste the same (Magnolia, Buttercup Cafe, Crumbs, etc)
I am hoping Cocoa will be offering non-buttercream, less sweet options (like some of treats offered in European cafes?)

I *love* Cocoa's cakes. Jess is taking orders for custom cakes even before her bakery opens. We had two amazing cakes from her last fall and winter. Here's the review I submitted to Yelp:

Quote:
If you are looking for a fantastic custom cake for a special occasion, look no further. The owner was the head pastry chef at famed Nobu in Manhattan, and I'd heard through the grapevine how amazing her cakes are. While Cocoa Bakery was still under construction I asked if she would be willing to make a cake for my son's third birthday - in the shape of a large X, his initial. Since I figured that she knew cake design better than we do, I asked her to surprise us with the design.

What arrived at our house was simply amazing. A large 3-dimensional X of decadent chocolate cake with rich white cream cheese frosting, decorated with marvelous multi-colored fondant polka dots. All presented on a beautifully wrapped pastry board. It was whimsical, colorful, and simplistically elegant. We loved it.

What was the best part, though, was when we finally tasted Cocoa Bakery's creation. The party-goers (adults and kids) could not stop commenting on how fantastic it tasted. I honestly think this was the best cake we have ever eaten - moist with a deep chocolate taste balanced perfectly by the cream cheese frosting. Kids and adults loved the fondant polka dots and the little ones were able to pick out their favorite colors for their serving.

The cake was so good that when I threw a good friend a baby shower for her soon-to-be-adopted son, I knew we needed a Cocoa cake (and, well, guests who had been to my son's birthday party sealed the deal when they started asking if we'd be serving another cake from Cocoa Bakery!). Again, I asked Jess at Cocoa to surprise us with the design.

This time the cake was equally amazing with chocolate cake, buttercream filling, an amazing frosting, and beautiful edible sculptures on top reminiscent of babyhood - a rattle, a little ducky, a receiving blanket... The best part, which brought our guest-of-honor to tears, was the inscription on top with her son's names - both the name she and her husband had given him as well as the name from his birthmother written in the language of his country of origin. Jess said an assistant pastry chef at her restaurant was a native speaker and helped her write the characters perfectly. Service above and beyond, creating memories that will last a lifetime, and worth every penny.

I will most certainly be working with Cocoa Bakery & Cafe for future cakes to mark milestones in my family's and friends' lives. Right now I consider them a signature part of our celebrations. Thank you Jess and Cocoa Bakery - you are the best!

I contacted Cocoa about making a dessert for a small X-mas dinner we had; my only requests were ?not too sweet? and ?sort of Northern Italian?. The dessert ended up being a dark chocolate-hazelnut torte (70% chocolate ? I think she said she used Valrhona) that was a definite ?WOW?!

I do hope that they?ll be able to open in 2009. It will be well worth the wait!

Any update on this place - ran by it the other day and it doesn't look like there's been any activity for over a month. The store is empty with no signs of activity/work.

Jersey City...you are in for a treat!

After a little bit of begging and lots of finger crossing the owner of the soon to open Cocoa Bakery & Cafe agreed to make the birthday cake for a 40th birthday party held this evening.

We wanted something a little different, modern, feminine and elegant. She created a structure of three tiers, the bottom two tiers held 50 cupcakes and the top tier was a mini cake. The cupcakes matched the top tier cake and both were covered with fondant and mini sugar flowers. Each individual flower was hand painted....it was truly spectacular. The presentation alone was so beautiful and when we finally tasted the cakes...AWESOME! The fondant and sugar flowers melted in your mouth and the cake was delicious.

I'm thrilled that Jessica Isaacs is opening her bakery here in Jersey City and wish her great success.

Agree 100%. Those were some delicious cupcakes!

Yay! We've been waiting for shops to open in Liberty Harbor North! We noticed the COCOA sign in one of the storefronts during the JC studio tour last weekend.

My friend and I were trying to guess what the new business was going to be: she said it would be a spa, I figured it would be a coffee shop or dessert place. Ding ding ding!

So when is the grand opening? I'm getting hungry thinking of yummy pastries!

Have you guys heard anything about Cocoa Bakery & Cafe? They have a website Cocoa Bakery & Cafe
and they're going to be opening at 275 Grand Street, but I don't know when.

It'll be fantastic to see a great bakery in town, especially for special occasion cakes.
