I live in Newport and need to find a reliable place to get my car serviced for routine maintenance. I've tried Pep Boys but they are a joke and don't seem to care much. I haven't heard great things about Sears either. Anywhere else worth trying that's within walking distance to Newport?

Ceasar, the guy who runs Dukes II on Second Street (behind BJs) did excellent work on an ancient Mercedes I used to have. He gets busy, so there's a wait sometimes, but that's the only problem I've ever had with him.

Broadway Gulf did an excellent job for me, and they were very helpful and honest. Totally agree that pepboys are inept. Midas in Journal sq will try and rip you off, they charge exorbitant prices for their parts and if you bring your own they will charge extra labor to make up for it. My brother had some expensive work done there, the problem did not go away and a trusted mechanic later told him it appeared nothing had actually been done.

Just wanted to see if there were any good recommendations for a mechanic in JC and/or the surrounding area?

If you want to save yourself some money, buy the parts yourself: Autopart International
51 pacific ave. They make quality stuff, the exhaust is oe specs.

Then ask them who they recommend locally to install it. They deal with all the shops, they know who is legit and who isn't.

There is already a thread on this.

Iva spent way too much time in repair shops the past few years. My two cents:
dukes on second behind BJ's
summit off Newark by Dickersin HS.

Both have done right by me.

Coincidently, they were both too busy today for a last minute ordeal I had today, and I'm at G&T on communipaw ave as I write this. So far the seem reliable and are opne till six today, this Xmas eve.

While not in JC, but very close, Dave's in Hoboken on Newark/Willow is VERY good. Maybe not the cheapest, but they do the job right, and don't use shit parts. That's worth the price right there, IMO.

The Getty goes by the name of Atlantic Auto repair. Naqi is a good guy. Honest.

As for Pep Boys, they are ALWAYS inept. They use underpaid ,undertrained mechanics who don't give a shit about your car. Doesn't matter which Pep Boys.

J & G Auto Repair Center at 146 Sterling Avenue in JC, Phone number, (201) 332-2049.

It's a one man shop, but Jimmy loves what he does. And more important, he's HONEST with you. If something is beyond his scope, he'll tell you. He talks to you like a good old fashioned doctor would, inquiring about how you drive, what your expectations are, etc before performing any service. He's been servicing my BMW now ever since the free dealer service expired (6 years now) and I've never once left feeling anything but totally satisfied.

Tell him Scott sent you.

Do NOT go to A-One on 184 Bay St. The plastic switch for my heater broke. They charged me $195 to "fix" it. The switch now won't go to the cold setting all the way and doesn't turn properly. I went back to tell them about this issue and they offered to order a brand new switch system for another $180. It's a freakin plastic switch! And if they could have ordered a brand new switch system in, why didn't they do it to begin with?!

I'll add a recommendation for Joe's Auto Electric in downtown. I chose it because it got good reviews on the Car Talk Web site and because it's within walking distance for me. Joe is a nice guy and I didn't feel ripped off. When my car was making a funny noise he took it for a spin and didn't hear anything, so he just kept driving until he did! He wanted to make sure he heard the noise before he diagnosed it. Just watch the potholes or you'll get a flat tire in that back alley where they're located.

Wherever you go, make sure it's not AAMCO. The work they did on my car was bad and expensive.

trust me on this one, try...

(Good thread!)

I'm looking for someone to fix my 1993 Sentra. Right now I need some body work done, but I would also like to find someone who does good work with Nissan engines. Any recommendations?

Here's 2 other option.

Jason L. - (201) 927-5641
- He's an auto technician for a European car company during the day, and does side work at nights and weekends from his garage.
- He's just recently completed two major services on my vehicles (30K on a European SUV and a 60K on a Japanese car)

Ding's Auto Repair Center
1780 Kennedy Blvd
Jersey City, NJ 07305
(201) 333-1211
- I use this auto service when Jason isn't available. Honest, reliable and inexpensive.

Good luck

hi,

our power window (VW passat), mechanism broke and the window slid down into the door and wont roll up.

can anyone recommend anywhere for a quick fix?

i'll probably go to Sernios out on communipaw, but if anyone has anywhere close to the heights they'd recommend, i'd appreciate it.

i'd pull off the door panel and do it myself but i don't want to screw the car up.

thanks in advance.

Hi All!

First post on JCList.

I went to Summit Auto Repair based on the recommendations on this thread.

I was not disappointed. The service was excellent and so was the price. They showed me my old parts upon pickup and reviewed their condition with me. The invoice had labor hours broken down to each of the services provided, and all the new parts were listed individually with their prices.

I asked to have the brakes checked out and was told the rear brakes were still fine. In other words they didn't sell me the rear brake replacement when I didn't need it.

They also did a general checkup of the car free of charge, which was greatly appreciated.

It's true their scheduling was very loose, as was mentioned by others on this thread. If you don't use your car every day and just move it to each side of the street for street cleaning like me, then it won't matter much. So while I did drop my car off Thurs. morning and not get it until Wed. morn., it was well worth it to get honest service at a great price with a high quality of work.

Highly recommended.

I second Shadrack's recommendation, but if you don't know yet,
NJ has State inspection stations that are free, and quick (as long as you don't wait until the last minute).
They are drive-through, and it takes about 10 minutes plus whatever time waiting in line.
If you go to a licensed private garage the inspection will cost you money. I think its $75 at Summit Auto unless you have repairs done there.
So if you think that you'll pass inspection with no repairs, definitely try the State inspection station first, just make sure you check all your brake light, parking light bulbs, etc. to save yourself an extra trip back.
The nearest inspection station is on Secaucus Rd. at County Ave in Secaucus.

I second this recommendation - fair, honest and does an excellent job. I use them for my 8 year-old bimmer and they cost half as much as the dealership
