These guys will be out in no time. Sad to say! I'm glad there is a higher police pressence in the area but how much time will they actually have to do, lets get realistic.

Jersey City residents, please protect yourselves. I can't tell you how many people I see walking around our streets late at night, alone, with earbuds in their ears. There's no easier target. Be vigilent. Take out the earbuds, watch who and what are around you.

It's kind of alarming that all three of the mugging locations are fairly well-travelled intersections! Grove Street at 6pm sounds like you're just asking to get caught.

i saw them making the arrest on the corner of york and grand around 6pm last night. there were about 5 cop cars and a couple of unmarked cars. Quite a takedown they had going on - They blocked off york and part of grove . i had no idea that there were a pair of 'serial muggers' downtown.

Props to the JCPD...

prob 3-5 minimum.. 1 year in county pending court if they cant make bail.. with that crediting towards a 3-5 depending on their criminal record/lawyer selection...

so any guess any long they will be back on the street? i am thinking 1 year....

Good work JCPD. Now I hope these creeps are locked up for at least 10 years, if not life. For somethings I wish we had Saudi or Chinese style justice.

2 that cops call Downtown serial muggers are nabbed

Two Jersey City men accused of pouncing on Downtown women for their valuables were caught in the act Thursday night, police said.

Christopher Aponte, 23, of Colgate Street, and Wilfredo Martir, 25, of Third Street, were arrested at 6 p.m. and charged with the attempted robbery of a 46-year-old woman at Grove and York streets.

Police said plainclothes cops who had been following the pair for more than an hour, closed in on them after police said they had grabbed the woman's purse and shoved her to the ground. Police said the men fought with cops and tried to flee, but were restrained.

Aponte and Martir were additionally charged with resisting arrest and aggravated assault on a police officer. Police said one of the cops' hands was broken in the struggle with the pair.

Police said Aponte and Martir were also charged in connection with two other Downtown muggings earlier this month -- one involving a 26-year-old woman at Sixth Street and Marin Boulevard on Nov. 5 and the other, a 43-year-old woman at Erie and Third streets on Nov. 11.

In each of the incidents, police said the women were alone, approached from behind, and pushed to the ground. No weapons were used, they said.

Detective Supervisor Capt. Chet Major said of the arrests: "It was good old-fashioned police work. We kept an eye on them until they essentially did what we expected them to do."
