U.S. Airways plane goes down in Hudson River

NEW YORK (AP) ? A U.S. Airways plane has crashed into the Hudson River, sending passengers fleeing for safety in the frigid waters.

New York City firefighters, federal transportation officials and an armada of boats were responding to the accident. It was not immediately clear if there were injuries.

"I just thought, 'Why is it so low?' And, splash, it hit the water," said witness Barbara Sambriski, a researcher at The Associated Press.

The plane was submerged in the icy waters up to the windows, and rescue crews had opened the door and were pulling passengers in yellow life vests from the plane. Several boats surrounded the plane, which appeared to be slowly sinking.

"I saw what appeared to be a tail fin of a plane sticking out of the water," said Erica Schietinger, whose office windows at Chelsea Piers look out over the Hudson. "All the boats have sort of circled the area. ... I can't tell what's what at this point."

Hey Everyone!

The holidays are here and I know I will have enough stress at the airport so I hope to avoid any problems on the way to the airport.

I am looking to find a reliable car or taxi service to the airport?

I know there are some discussions on this topic, but they are more than a year old so I just wanted an update!

Thanks in advance!

A1 Karma: 201.333.6666. they charged me $28 plus tax and tip from downtown jc to EWR. (i paid $36 total). they were on time for pickups from my home and from the airport. don't know if they're the cheapest, but i was very happy with their service.

i saw them making the arrest on the corner of york and grand around 6pm last night. there were about 5 cop cars and a couple of unmarked cars. Quite a takedown they had going on - They blocked off york and part of grove . i had no idea that there were a pair of 'serial muggers' downtown.

I've been in the area just under 6 months - I'm on grove between grand and york. I think it's very safe, I walk home late from the path, and feel safe walking my dog pretty late. I do think it's pretty noisy at night, though. sirens, trucks, etc. And what's with the whistles around 8-8:30am - is that crossing guards?
