NY makes bid for money marked for tunnel

Saturday, November 06, 2010

TRENTON - New York is seeking $3 billion that the federal government had committed to the Hudson River rail tunnel that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie scrapped.

The Record newspaper reports Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York has asked Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood to redirect the money to the Long Island Rail Road's East Side Access Project and the construction of the Second Avenue subway line.

Transportation officials in the Garden State are examining how to redirect as much as $1 billion in federal highway funding that had been pledged for the tunnel.

LaHood has said New Jersey will be required to repay up to $350 million.

Christie cited cost overruns when he killed the project last month.

What I find amazing is that people who can accurately assess the awful intentions of the majority of elected Republican are incapable of doing the same for Democrats, and vice-versa.

Keep thinking they have your best interest in mind. Meanwhile they bleed you dry and laugh all the way to the bank. They are all common folk just like you and me. The only difference is their millions of dollars, 7 houses, yachts, limos. Keep believing the hype. Smaller government and fatter stuffed pockets.

The project definitely had flaws, but isn't it important to draw in high earning individuals to the NJ suburbs? While much of the state income tax goes to NY with NYC jobs, these people pay real estate taxes and buy goods and services here. People act like it is only NY v. NJ. But isn't it NY & NJ against the rest of the country and the world? We are competing against everyone. If we don't improve our infrastructure in this region, we will just be left behind.

JCSHEP, I think it does bode well for JC real-estate, and non union jobs. Christie is really looking after the private sector folks on this one. Should the economy heat up, more companies might set up shop on this side of the river, better for these cities, tax rolls, etc. Should the economy still stay in a funk, more incentive for companies to save some money and move here. More highways just enables people to drive past here. Blank checks written to unions, is never a good thing.

BF, the USA has well over 10,000 miles of border/coastline - you have a wide ranges of choices to depart from if you don't like it here. PS - you sound like a disgruntled democrat - after this Tuesday, you'll be bouncing of the walls even more - cheers!

Whine on THIS, J_C Man! You sound like that crook Paul Volcker, who told the American to stop "whining", while that SC*MBAG made over 100 million in 2 years. Your pathetic Repug life is equivalent to the 2 SH*T FOR BRAINS IN THE VIDEO ABOVE. One crook was golfing while people were drowning in Katrina, the other crook was worried about the color of tie and how it looked on TV. Easily could have been your friend or family member, or in your gene pool case, it's just flotsam. At least RobotJustin HAD an opinion. STOP WATCHING TV J_C Man.

Yeah, not-blowing billions on a politically-motivated boondoggle is the exact equivalent of f-ing up Katrina.

Their pretty red balloon of "western rugged independence" is impervious to your damned city geek bean counter logic! Those great faux cowboy presidents Reagan and GWB decreed it! That myth is as persistent as those other great American myths of the free market and the classless society, no amount of argument with facts can touch them.

But that's sort of besides the point. That the feds & the PA will give fixed funds, but leave NJ on the hook for overuns is the major point, that it seems impossible to get public projects budgeted accurately to begin with is actually an overlooked scandal.

Also, none of the bleeding heart libs on this site are answering why don't the feds, Port Authority, Amtrak, NYC, NY State kick in if this is such a great project. I'm not doubting the benefits of the project, but someone has to pay for it. I could think of hundreds of projects to create jobs and improve transportation, reduce crime, etc., but it has to be paid for - how do you pay when the state is already collapsing under a mountain of debt?

Why doesn't Obama send some of that stimulus money to NJ to pay for this? After all, this is a so-called "shovel-ready" project and not all of the stimulus money has been spent yet.

The sheer stupidity of some people here is astounding. All it takes is a quick few searches and most questions are answered. It's easier to take the Fox "news" route I suppose and just make things up to fit what works.

For Lautenberg this tunnel has become a do or die moment for him, so why then doesn?t he just foot the bill instead of making the citizens pay for it..

And lets not rehash how the same system in charge got us into this mess and also put him in the Senate in the first place..

That's the beauty of long term financing. Would the citizens of New Jersey have ever built the tunnels, GWB if they were charged directly up front. I think not. For that matter, nothing would get built and we'd be living in a sh_thole country.

It's really easy to spend other people's money. Would the 650,000 residents of Boston do it again if they had to actually pay the $34,000 apiece that it cost?

The park and public space created after burying the highway underneath Boston is stunning. Every urban highway in America should undergo the Big Dig procedure; its opened up a city once divided by an elevated highway while beautifying the surrounding neighborhoods.

LOL, Hey Hero read this!

Report: Big Dig Cost Explodes To $22 Billion

The $15 billion Big Dig highway project, already the most expensive highway project in U.S. history, will cost Massachusetts another $7 billion in interest before it is paid off in 2038, according to an analysis of state financial documents.

The Boston Globe reported Thursday that a review of thousands of pages of state documents showed that the massive cost of the project has had a ripple effect on state finances, with the state making $600 million or more a year in payments and diverting funds away from needed repairs to roads and bridges.

Nearly 75 percent of the cost of the Big Dig was paid by Massachusetts.

Michael Widmer, president of the Massachusetts Taxpayers Association, said the state faces some tough fiscal choices as it struggles to pay off the debt and keep up with much-needed maintenance and repairs.

"All of the money that we invested in one project -- whatever the value of the project -- has had very serious consequences on the state's inability to undertake all sorts of critical highway and bridge projects across the state," said Widmer, who reviewed the raw financial data and confirmed the size of the Big Dig debt.

"It's one of the major reasons why we're seeing such an obvious decline in our transportation infrastructure," he said. "Everything is falling apart in terms of roads, bridges, mass transit, the Mass. Turnpike."

Massachusetts spends 38 percent of its highway budget on debt, more than any other state. The state also pays almost 80 percent of its highway workers with borrowed money, the Globe reported.

Widmer said the state will be forced to either add "user fees" on certain highways or raise the state's gas tax, both politically unpopular alternatives.

"We can't print Monopoly money, so you either have to decide you're going to invest in your (transportation) infrastructure or you're not," he said. "The only alternative is to let our roads and bridges continue to fall apart."

According to a WBZ exclusive Survey USA Fast Track poll, 58 percent of Massachusetts residents said they oppose increasing tolls on the Mass Pike to help pay for Big Dig debt and repairs on other state roads and bridges.

Meanwhile, 80% of Massachusetts residents said the $22 billion cost of the Big Dig Project was not worth it.
